Perai electrical cable warehouse gutted in massive fire, operations stretch beyond 12 hours as firefighters battle lingering flames
Penang Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM) operations assistant director John Sagun Francis said JBPM received a call informing them of the fire at 6.59 pm yesterday and the first fire engine from the Perai Fire and Rescue Station (BBP) rushed to the location.
'The fire has engulfed a 2,400 square foot electrical cable warehouse and when the fire brigade arrived the fire was already raging with 90 per cent of the two-storey building destroyed.
'The fire was brought under control at 7.59 pm but the follow-up effort was still being carried out at the location until 8.30 am due to the rubble of the floor and roof of the building,' he said in a statement today.
He said there were no casualties in the fire and the extinguishing operation was carried out by more than 100 officers and firefighters from the Jalan Perak, Bandar Perda, Sungai Bakap and Butterworth Fire Departments and was assisted by 11 volunteer fire brigades. — Bernama

IPOH, Aug 16 (Bernama) -- Pulau Pangkor has emerged as the largest contributor to anchovy landings in Perak with a record of 2,844.44 tonnes worth RM42.67 million in 2024. The Department of Fisheries (DOF) Malaysia said the achievement underscores the significant role of Pulau Pangkor in the country's fisheries industry, especially the anchovy fishing sector. "Nationally, the anchovy landings in Malaysia in 2024 totalled 14,589.20 tonnes valued at RM164.89 million, referring to the same species, Ikan Bilis/Bunga Air, as categorised in official records. "Among the main producing states are Sabah (5,956.17 tonnes), Perak (2,852.91 tonnes), Kedah (1,818.98 tonnes) and Kelantan (992.65 tonnes)," the statement said. The statement also stated that the Minister of Agriculture and Food Security (KPKM), Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu, had earlier conducted a working visit to the anchovy industry area on Pulau Pangkor earlier today. According to the DOF statement, Pulau Pangkor currently has 694 vessels registered in various operational zones, namely Zone A (462 vessels), Zone B (44 vessels), Zone C (168 vessels) and Zone C2 (20 vessels) which allows the landing of various fish species, including anchovies. The statement further said that apart from anchovies, statistics also showed that among the top 10 species landed in Manjung Selatan in 2024 were pelaring, tongkol (skipjack tuna), tamban sisek, selayang, kembong (Indian mackerel), cincaru, selar, white shrimp and squid, with a total landing value of RM644.08 million. 'Pulau Pangkor also contributes to Perak's aquaculture sector with a production of 7,056.40 tonnes in 2024 through brackish water pond farming systems, cages, shellfish farming, freshwater ponds, hatcheries and freshwater ornamental fish farming across an area of over 1,264 hectares,' the statement said. Pulau Pangkor also remains an important location in the national fisheries industry with its strategic advantage as a centre for high-quality anchovy production which is a benchmark for the industry.

ALOR SETAR, Aug 16 — The elder sister of Sultan of Kedah Al-Aminul Karim Sultan Sallehuddin Sultan Badlishah, Datuk Seri Tunku Sakinah Sultan Badlishah, died today. She was 95. According to the statement issued by the Comptroller of Kedah Royal Household Datuk Seri Bakar Din, Tunku Sakinah died at Villa Seri Tunku at 6.35 am. KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 16 — His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, King of Malaysia, has issued a stern reminder to members of the Malaysian Armed Forces about the correct wearing of honour berets and badges on military uniforms. Speaking at the 60th Anniversary Parade of the Special Forces Regiment at Kem Iskandar in Mersing, Johor today, Sultan Ibrahim, who serves as the Supreme Commander of the Malaysian Armed Forces, said all berets and badges should reflect the wearer's actual skills, qualifications, and identity — not serve merely as decoration. 'For example, I myself completed Special Forces and parachute training at Fort Bragg, United States. Therefore, I am entitled to wear those badges on my uniform,' he said, according to a post on his official Facebook page. The King added a caution for those who have received honorary badges. 'If you are only an honorary recipient, the badge can only be worn at that specific event, not as a daily decoration. 'So, for those who are not entitled to wear them… you know what should be done. 'This morning, I am only issuing a mild reprimand, siapa yang makan cili, dia yang rasa pedas (if you eat chili, you must feel the heat).' The royal admonition comes as part of the King's call to uphold discipline and authenticity within the armed forces, emphasising that uniforms and insignia should accurately reflect a soldier's experience and qualifications.
