Lidl just dropped ‘spectacular' new bakery item — and it only costs 79p
Lidl's in-store bakery boasts more than 40 items, with everything from brownies to boules and Belgian buns.
But eagle-eyed shoppers have noticed a brand new item was just added to the line-up and it stands out from the rest thanks to its colourful toppings.
The budget retailer has launched a Birthday Cake Bun in the bakery, priced at 79p and it features a pale pink icing and rainbow sprinkles.
From the outside, it looks like a rather standard iced bun, but inside it's hiding a fabulous fruity pink swirl.
Online reactions to the new supermarket product have been mixed so far, after @newfoodsuk shared a snap of the bun on Facebook and Instagram.
Some thought it looked 'yum' and 'nice' while others claimed they'd tried it and it was 'too dry for them'.
So Metro decided to put the Birthday Cake Bun to the test and find out if it's worth buying, and it certainly went down a treat.
James Besanvalle, Metro's assistant opinion editor, rated it a 4.5 out of 5, hailing it as 'fantastic'.
He said: 'Lidl's new Birthday Cake Bun combines all the best elements of a doughnut (pink icing and sprinkles) with a scroll-like bun (jam-filled and soft in the middle). Sure, it's sweet – but who really wants a birthday cake that's not? Supremely satisfying.'
And Metro's specialist food writer, Courtney Pochin, also gave one a try.
While James ate his on the day of purchase, Courtney took hers home to see how it would fare the next day and she was pretty impressed by how it held up.
'As someone who eats cake and pastries for a living, I've never been the biggest fan of supermarket baked goods. They just can't compete with homemade treats from independent bakeries,' she said.
'However, the Birthday Cake Bun was a pleasant surprise.'
She continued: 'After a day sat on my desk and a night in the cupboard, I didn't have high hopes for the bun, which looked rather sad and dry when I plated it up. But I'm pleased to report that somehow it had managed to stay soft instead of going stale (not going to think too much about why this might be right now).
'It's a fun twist on a classic and I have to admit I probably enjoyed it more than most people will as I realised I haven't actually had an iced bun in years.
'There's something so spectacularly nostalgic about the taste of one and it went down very nicely with a cup of tea.
'My only real gripe is that Lidl has scrimped on the hundreds and thousands on top and they're not spread out evenly. In my book, there's no such thing as too many sprinkles.
'It loses a point for poor sprinkle form, so it's a 4 out of 5 from me'
Lidl isn't the only supermarket with new baked goods on its shelves, as Tesco recently wowed shoppers with its brand new chocolate cake.
The retailer has teamed up with Studio Bakery, a family-run bakery business from Lancashire, to start selling the brand's giant slices of cake inspired by a nostalgic favourite – you know, that one you always wanted to reach through the screen and smash your face into in Matilda.
The aptly named Matilda Cake, is a beast of a chocolate cake slice that claims to serve 10 and sees 12 layers of chocolate sponge and 12 layers of ganache stacked one on top of the other. More Trending
Priced at £16 for the slice, (which is meant to serve 10 people) the product can be found in Tesco's bigger stores, but not the Express ones.
On social media, shoppers have hailed it the 'best chocolate cake they've ever had', with Frankie French posting in the Food Finds UK Official group to say: 'Best chocolate cake I've ever tried, this Studio Bakery Big Matilda Cake. Can't wait to be able to buy it in Tesco.'
But Metro's Courtney Pochin thinks there's a better chocolate cake out there and that's Bertha.

She claimed the Matilda Cake came a 'close second' to the one sold by Leeds-based bakery, Get Baked, but the overall quality just wasn't on par.

Romeo Beckham's sweet four-word message to dad after he finally gets knighthood
Sir David Beckham has shared an adorable post by his son Romeo, 22, congratulating him on receiving a knighthood - while Cruz and Brooklyn are yet to publicly break their silence Romeo Beckham has shared a sweet four-word message to his dad after it has been announced in the King's Birthday Honours List that David Beckham is set to receive a knighthood. Gone are the days Victoria will be nicknamed Posh, and she really has lived up to the moniker as Victoria, who received an OBE in 2017, also receives a new title with David's honour, and she will now be known as Lady Victoria Beckham. Each of the Beckham children are also famous, having grown up in front of the gaze of millions of fans. Although they have earned their own status' within the world of showbiz, Brooklyn, Romeo, Cruz and Harper Beckham won't get any royal recognition due to their dad's new title. Taking to Instagram in the early hours of Saturday, June 14 Romeo shared a black and white image of him and his dad with the words "So proud of you". David then shared it to his stories. Brooklyn and Cruz are yet to publicly congratulate their dad. The news comes as the family have been locked in a feud with eldest son Brooklyn, 26. Things came to a head when Brooklyn and wife Nicola Peltz skipped David's 50th birthday celebrations as the drama has reportedly resulted in the couple cutting contact with the famous family. Sir David said in a statement to the PA news agency: 'Growing up in East London with parents and grandparents who were so patriotic and proud to be British I never could have imagined I would receive such a truly humbling honour. 'To have played for and captained my country was the greatest privilege of my career and literally a boyhood dream come true. Off the pitch I have been fortunate to have the opportunity to represent Britain around the world and work with incredible organisations that are supporting communities in need and inspiring the next generation. 'I'm so lucky to be able to do the work that I do and I'm grateful to be recognised for work that gives me so much fulfilment. It will take a little while for the news to sink in but I'm immensely proud and it's such an emotional moment for me to share with my family.' Like every person who has received a knighthood, Sir David will be treated to an official ceremony. The ceremony, which often happens at Buckingham Palace, will see David kneel in front of a monarch – which can be either the King or another member of the Royal Family such as Princess Anne or Prince William – who will then touch the recipient's shoulder with a sword.

Pregnant Sophie Habboo shows off her blossoming baby bump in a hilarious slogan crop top as she shares series of stylish snaps
Pregnant Sophie Habboo proudly showcased her blossoming baby bump in a series of Instagram snaps shared on Friday. The former Made in Chelsea star, 30, flaunted her growing bump in a white crop top with the slogan 'Too Old For [Leonardo] DiCaprio ' printed on it as she posed for a mirror selfie. She also shared a stunning shot of herself in a white dress as she strolled through the streets of London while holding a iced coffee and her phone. Sophie also posted behind-the-scenes glimpses from the recording studio and a visit to the hairdresser as she documented the early days of her pregnancy. She wrapped up her photo dump with a fun picture of her husband, Jamie Laing, enjoying an ice cream, along with some delicious food she recently indulged in. From A-list scandals and red carpet mishaps to exclusive pictures and viral moments, subscribe to the Daily Mail's new showbiz newsletter to stay in the loop. Sophie revealed earlier this week on her and Jamie's newly named podcast NearlyParents, that she has struggled with some aspects of her pregnancy. She confessed that when her second trimester hit, she felt like she was 'dying' and was dealing with a lot of hormones that made her frequently feel irritated. 'This girl has gone from a bit of a b***h to don't come near me,' she quipped. 'Up until week eight, I was smooth sailing. No good aversions, no sickness, so much energy, I was like what is every talking about this is unbelievable. 'Week eight hit and everyone's starting to grate to me a bit. Like that man sat next to me on the plane breathing, like is it illegal if I punch him in the face? 'If you're a fan of the podcast, I love you so much but you're not going to like me if you meet me at the moment.' Jamie said he struggled to get his head around Sophie's mood changes with pregnancy, recalling: 'I asked Sophie if she had any cravings and she said, ''No, the only craving I have is hating you''. 'I then spent an evening on Reddit looking at "Why does your wife hate her husband so much when they're pregnant". He went on: 'Sophie is teaching me to drive and I'm a little bit nervous in the car and she goes "You're a s**t driver". I'm literally in my head going "Oh my god she's hasn't eaten this is really scary". 'Sophie then gets so angry she says to me "I'm so angry I want to drive us both into the back of this car and kill us". And then she started crying!' Sophie confessed that the 'anger is uncontrollable' but that it 'was very fleeting' as she lamented how her 'enormous t*ts' also meant she couldn't fit in any of her clothes. Jamie candidly told listeners how he owed her a real apology after not taking her hormones seriously and threatening to leave her over her 'grumpiness'. Sophie said: 'Jamie was like "Oh you're just milking it, you fake all your hormones, there's no such thing". He went "Oh you're just faking all of this." I was like "Oh my god" as I'm lying there with my enormous t*ts out and I can't fit into a single thing.' Recalling the incident in question, she went on: 'We are leaving and I feel really sick this day and Jamie gets his camera out and goes "I'm going to vlog today". Like on my Sunday that I'm about to vomit all day long. 'And what happened was Jamie sits down and he goes "I'm going to call my friends and ask them what I should do about this. Because I'm going to have to leave you. I'm going to leave you because you're just so unbearable right now."' Jokingly pretending to break down in tears, she shared: 'And I went "You're going to leave me and I'm pregnant".' It comes after the couple took to their podcast to tell their fans all about their impeding parenthood for the first time, where Sophie revealed some of the struggles she'd been dealing with in her pregnancy In defence of his actions, Jamie quickly added: 'The amount of people who are going to call me an a*****e. Just a caveat to add - I had no idea the emotional journey that you go on, how your body changes. 'I just didn't understand the extreme things that go on and since having read stuff on Instagram, I am awe of what you go through. The hormone change is wild.' Showing their Chelsea roots, the couple also revealed that Sophie's worst craving so far was for caviar, recounting how they had dashed round London trying to find a shop that was open at 8pm. Jamie explained they eventually found a caviar store only to discover a single pot cost £240, as he declared: 'I was like "Well that craving has to stop there and then". Sophie revealed that after some Googling, she learned it is recommended that pregnant people avoid the expensive delicacy due to the risks of bacteria and mercury. However, she confessed that the risks were the only thing that stopped her eating it, otherwise would not have allowed the hefty price tag to put her off.
