FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. — Will Lionel Messi play as Inter Miami returns to action in the Concacaf Champions Cup tournament tonight?
Messi's playing status is a topic of discussion as Inter Miami hosts Jamaican Premier League champions Cavalier FC on Thursday night at 8 p.m. inside Chase Stadium.
Here's what we know: Inter Miami coach Javier Mascherano said Messi is healthy and practiced with his teammates, but did not divulge whether Messi would play. Messi's status is essentially 'the same as the rest of the players.'
'We'll see,' Mascherano said of Messi on Wednesday. 'He's in good health, but we'll see what's good for us.'
What's good for Inter Miami is obviously Messi returning to action after he did not travel for last Sunday's match against the Houston Dynamo. Inter Miami opted to rest Messi because of the congested start of the year where he predominately played in three matches during a six-day stretch from Feb. 19-26.
If Messi plays Thursday night, it will be his first match in nine days. However, it also begins another stretch of three matches in a week for Inter Miami. On Sunday, Inter Miami hosts Charlotte FC in an MLS regular-season match. Next Thursday, Inter Miami will complete its round-of-16 matchup with Cavalier FC at National Stadium in Kingston, Jamaica — where Messi is expected to play his first match in the country in front of an already sold out crowd of 35,000 ticket buyers.

Messi's status will be confirmed when Inter Miami announces its starting lineup, about an hour before the game begins.
The match begins at 8 p.m. ET (9 p.m. in Argentina).
The match will be available to watch on FS2 in English and ViX in Spanish.
What to know about Cavalier FC?
Cavalier FC is playing in the Champions Cup tournament for the second time in as many years. They qualified directly into the round of 16 by winning the Concacaf Caribbean Cup in December.
The matchup against Inter Miami will be the second time Cavalier has faced MLS competition. Cavalier lost to FC Cincinnati by scores of 2-0 and 4-0 in the first round last year.
Cavalier FC coach and sporting director Rudolph Speid said Wednesday: 'We're really looking forward to doing well. I think it will inspire a generation of players in Jamaica itself, just because of what will happen. We'll play them here. Everybody will be watching on TV. And, also in the return leg where we expect a packed stadium, and everybody just talking about the game. That inspiration is much more for the country than just our team.'
Messi could play in the following six matches with Inter Miami and the Argentina national team later this month:

MARLINS: Smokin'-hot Fish go for sweep of Yankees, .500 today: Marlins atop the HB10? A first. But earned. Miami is 54-55, with four straight wins and 24-10 since June 22, after a wild 13-12 home comeback over the Yankees and then Saturday's 2-0 on Eury Perez's gem. Fish go for the sweep of NYY and can reach .500 today. As important, the Fish won this year's trade deadline with restraint. A year ago Miami led the majors in deadline deals as Peter Bendix went crazy in a prospects get. This time only two trades: OF Jesús Sánchez to Houston for starter Ryan Gusto and two prospects, and C Nick Fortes to Tampa Bay for outfielder Matthew Etzel. Gusto is a nice add, but the best deals were the ones not done: Keeping starters Sandy Alcantara and Edward Cabrera despite a market for both. The statement: Marlins are all-in in chase for wild card playoff spot. 2. INTER MIAMI: Despite win, Messi injury clouds hopes of Leagues Cup advance: Inter Miami added midfielder Rodrigo de Paul as a de factor bodyguard for Lionel Messi, but that did not prevent Messi from incurring a thigh injury Saturday and leaving early in a win on penalty kicks over Nexaca in a Leagues Cup match in Fort Lauderdale. The injury is not believed serious but could jeopardize Messi 's availability Wednesday at home vs. Pumas in another Leagues Cup game. Miami is 2-0 in the MLS vs. Mexico tournament but even at 3-0 may be at risk of not advancing due to goal-differential. 3. HEAT: Bad week redefined: Theft scandal, Rozier still on roster: Miami reportedly declined a trade to get Marcus Smart from Washington in exchange for Terry Rozier. Extremely upset were Heat fans, many of whom would gladly trade Rozier for a used pair of Keds. Also this past week: The FBI and U.S. Attorney's Office began an investigation of merchandise theft of items including game-worn jerseys stolen from the Heat's uniform equipment room. It invites a nod of respect for Wendell Scott, please? Scott in 1963 in Jacksonville became the first Black driver to win on NASCAR's main stage, despite racism at the time that saw him receive death threats, be poisoned once and often wrecked intentionally. He never received the trophy for the one race he won, his family finally was given it in 2021 -- 31 years after his death. Greg Cote's Poll Dance: What South Florida team will be next to win championship?
Which of South Florida's Big Six sports teams will be next to win a championship? The Panthers have won two Stanley Cups in a row, but what are the odds of three straight? The Heat last reigned in 2013 and the Marlins in 2003. The Hurricanes last ruled college football in 2001. The Dolphins are way due, having last won it all in 1973. Inter Miami in only its sixth year seeks its first title and has Lionel Messi now. We ran this same poll last August so let's call it an annual gauge. The results a year ago: Panthers 33%, Inter Miami 30%, Hurricanes 19%, Dolphins 13%, Heat 5% and Marlins 1%. One year later, now, if your money were riding on it who would you wager will be next to win its sport's biggest prize? This is not a favorite-team poll. Vote with head not heart. Personally, I'd put the Panthers and Inter Miami on the top tier with Canes football close. The Heat and Marlins (though hot lately) seem further off. The Dolphins, well ... they have the law of averages on their side, at least?! Your turn. Vote as many times as you like or until your fingers ache. And remember: Head, not heart. Inter Miami: bad news, Lionel Messi injured!
Lionel Messi Last night, Lionel Messi left his Inter Miami teammates early during the Leagues Cup clash against Necaxa. The Argentine star picked up an injury. Messi was forced off during his side's qualification match against Mexican club Necaxa in the Leagues Cup. Lionel Messi had to leave the pitch after a collision with Necaxa defender Alexis Pena. The former PSG player received treatment on his right thigh before being substituted after just 11 minutes of play. "He felt some discomfort. But we won't know the extent of his injury until tomorrow (Sunday). There's definitely something, but maybe it's not too serious because he wasn't in real pain. Still, he felt something," said Miami head coach Javier Mascherano. It's worth noting that Inter Miami came out on top. They claimed a 5-4 victory in the penalty shootout (2-2 after regular time).
