Greece welcomes Euronext's proposed full acquisition of Athens Stock Exchange

The Star02-07-2025
ATHENS, July 2 (Xinhua) -- The Greek government on Tuesday expressed support for a proposed full acquisition of the Athens Stock Exchange (ATHEX) by Euronext, Europe's largest stock exchange operator.
In a statement, the Ministry of Economy and Finance said it "takes a very positive view of the potential agreement," describing the offer as "a sign of trust in the stability and positive outlook of the Greek economy."
The Paris-based Euronext Group announced on Monday that it had initiated discussions with the board of ATHEX regarding a possible acquisition of 100 percent of the Greek bourse's shares. The proposed transaction, valued at 399 million euros (about 470 million U.S. dollars), would be executed via a share exchange. According to the proposal, based on Euronext's closing share price of 145.10 euros as of June 30, 2025, each 21.029 ATHEX shares would be exchanged for one Euronext share.
Euronext noted that the offer remains subject to due diligence and further review. "The combined group would operate on a unified trading and post-trade technology platform and a cross-border clearing framework," the company said. It added that the transaction would contribute to the integration of European capital markets and support the transformation of Greece's financial infrastructure.
ATHEX confirmed on Monday that it had received an "unsolicited, non-binding and highly conditional" all-share acquisition proposal from Euronext. The board of ATHEX, together with its financial and legal advisors, is currently assessing the offer from both strategic and financial perspectives. No formal negotiations have yet taken place, the statement said.
Founded in 1876, the Athens Stock Exchange is Greece's main securities market. As of 2023, ATHEX hosted approximately 130 listed companies, mainly in the financial, energy, telecommunications and shipping sectors. Its average daily trading volume ranges between 80 million and 100 million euros.
According to its official website, Euronext is responsible for around 25 percent of Europe's equity trading and operates exchanges in Amsterdam, Brussels, Dublin, Lisbon, Milan, Oslo and Paris. The group has over 1,800 listed companies with a combined market capitalization exceeding 6 trillion euros. (1 euro = 1.18 U.S. dollars)

Modi's tax overhaul to strain finances but boost image amid US trade tensions

Last year, India said caramel popcorn would be taxed at 18 per cent but the salted category at five per cent, triggering criticism about a glaring example of GST's complexities. — TNS NEW DELHI: Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi's deepest tax cuts in eight years will strain government revenues but are winning praise from businesses and political pundits who say they will bolster his image in an ongoing trade fight with Washington. In the biggest tax overhaul since 2017, Modi's government on Saturday (Aug 16) announced sweeping changes to the complex goods and services tax (GST) regime which will make daily essentials and electronics cheaper from October, helping consumers and also companies like Nestle, Samsung and LG Electronics. At the same time, in his Independence Day speech on Friday, Modi urged Indians to use more goods made domestically, echoing calls from many of his supporters to boycott US products after Donald Trump hiked tariffs on imports from India to 50 per cnet as of August 27. The tax cut plan comes with costs given GST is a major revenue generator. IDFC First Bank says the cuts will boost India's GDP by 0.6 percentage points over 12 months but will cost the state and federal government US$20 billion annually. But it will improve weak stock market sentiment and bring political dividends for Modi ahead of a critical state election in the eastern state of Bihar, said Rasheed Kidwai, a fellow at New Delhi-based Observer Research Foundation. "GST reduction will impact everyone, unlike cuts to income tax, which is paid by only 3-4 per cent of the population. Modi is doing this as he is under a lot of pressure due to US policies," said Kidwai. "The move will also help the stock market, which is now politically important as it has a lot of retail investors." India launched the major tax system in 2017 that subsumed local state taxes into the new, nationwide GST to unify its economy for the first time. But the biggest tax reform since India's independence faced criticism for its complex design that taxes products and services under four slabs - 5, 12, 18 and 28 per cent. Last year, India said caramel popcorn would be taxed at 18 per cent but the salted category at five per cent, triggering criticism about a glaring example of GST's complexities. Under the new system, India will abolish the 28 per cent slab - which includes cars and electronics - and move nearly all of the items under the 12 per cent category to the lower five per cent slab, benefitting many more consumer items and packaged foods. Government data shows the 28 per cent and 12% per cent tax slabs together garner 16 per cent of India's annual GST revenue of roughly US$250 billion last fiscal year. Bihar is a key state politically and goes to the polls by November. A recent survey by the VoteVibe agency showed Modi's opposition has an edge largely because of a lack of jobs. "Any tax cut has wide public appreciation. But of course, the timing is purely determined by political exigencies," said Dilip Cherian, a communications consultant and co-founder of Indian public relations firm Perfect Relations. "It seems to be an indication of some mixture of frustration as well as recognition that there is a broad public pushback against high and crippling rates of taxation." Modi's ruling Bharatiya Janata Party has seized on his tax announcement, posting on X that on the Hindu festival of lights, Deepavali, "a brighter gift of simpler taxes and more savings is waiting for every Indian." Modi has vowed to protect farmers, fishermen and cattlemen, following Trump's surprise tariff announcement on India, after trade talks between New Delhi and Washington collapsed over disagreement on opening India's vast farm and dairy sectors and stopping Russian oil purchases. The latest round of trade talks between the two nations set for August 25-29 has also been called off. - Reuters

Dollar braces for busy week of geopolitics and Fed speak

U.S. Dollar banknotes are seen in this illustration taken July 17, 2022. REUTERS/Dado Ruvic/Illustration SINGAPORE: The dollar dithered on Monday ahead of a key meeting between U.S. President Donald Trump and his Ukrainian counterpart Volodymyr Zelenskiy, while investors also looked ahead to the Federal Reserve's Jackson Hole symposium for more policy clues. Currency moves were largely subdued in the early Asia session, though the dollar steadied after last week's fall as traders further pared back bets of a jumbo Fed cut next month. The euro was little changed at $1.1705, while sterling edged up 0.07% to $1.3557. Against a basket of currencies, the dollar advanced slightly to 97.85, after losing 0.4% last week. Markets are now pricing in an 84% chance the Fed would ease rates by a quarter point next month, down from 98% last week, after a raft of data including a jump in U.S. wholesale prices last month and a solid increase in July's retail sales figures dimmed the prospect of an oversized 50-basis-point cut. "While the data don't all point in the same direction, the U.S. economy looks to be in okay shape in the third quarter," said Bill Adams, chief economist at Comerica Bank. "The Fed is likely to cut interest rates by year-end, either in September, when markets now price in a cut, or a few months later, when Comerica forecasts a cut." The main event for investors on Monday is a meeting between Trump and Zelenskiy, who will be joined by some European leaders, as Washington presses Ukraine to accept a quick peace deal to end Europe's deadliest war in 80 years. Trump is leaning on Zelenskiy to strike an agreement after he met Kremlin chief Vladimir Putin in Alaska and emerged more aligned with Moscow on seeking a peace deal instead of a ceasefire first. Also key for markets this week will be the Kansas City Federal Reserve's August 21-23 Jackson Hole symposium, where Fed Chair Jerome Powell is due to speak on the economic outlook and the central bank's policy framework. "I think (Powell) will also talk about the current economic conditions in the U.S., and that will be more policy relevant, that will be more interesting to markets," said Joseph Capurso, head of international and sustainable economics at Commonwealth Bank of Australia. "Given market pricing is very high for a rate cut in September, I think the risk is that Powell is hawkish, or is perceived to be hawkish, if he gives a balanced view of the U.S. economy." In other currencies, the dollar rose 0.11% against the yen to 147.34, after falling roughly 0.4% last week. Japan's government on Friday brushed aside rare and explicit comments from U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent who said the Bank of Japan was "behind the curve" on policy, which appeared to be aimed at pressuring the country's central bank into raising interest rates. The Australian dollar was up 0.1% at $0.65145, while the New Zealand dollar rose 0.15% to $0.5934, after falling 0.5% last week. - Reuters
