Taylor Swift wins recording artist of the year crown for fifth time
Taylor Swift has been named global recording artist of the year for 2024 by the IFPI, the fifth time she has won the honour from the organisation that represents the recorded music industry.
The megastar's "The Tortured Poets Department" record also topped four IFPI charts - global album, global vinyl album, global streaming album and global album sales, the IFPI said in a statement on Tuesday.
It had a strong lead on the 2024 global album sales chart, which calculates physical purchases and full album downloads, with 5.6 million units. K-pop group ENHYPEN's "Romance: Untold" took the second spot with 3.4 million units sold.
Swift's record-breaking "Eras" tour, the first to surpass $1 billion in revenue, also boosted interest in her past records, with several appearing in the 2024 vinyl album and streaming album charts, the IFPI said.
"This has been a huge year for Taylor, and it has been incredible to see the extent to which fans all over the world are connecting with her superb catalogue of music," IFPI Chief Executive Victoria Oakley said.
Swift was first named IFPI global recording artist of the year in 2014 and then in 2019, 2022 and 2023, the most times for any performer since the award was introduced 12 years ago.
Presented to whoever tops the IFPI global artist chart, the prize is calculated by looking at an artist's or group's worldwide sales for streaming, download and physical music formats during the calendar year and covers their whole body of work, according to the organisation.
Canadian rapper Drake and K-pop group SEVENTEEN came in second and third respectively on that chart for 2024.

Pop singer Billie Eilish claimed the artist prize over Taylor Swift, Kendrick Lamar, Morgan Wallen and other nominees of the American Music Awards. She won all seven categories in which she was nominated, including album of the year and favourite touring artist. 'This is so crazy. Post Malone was named the favourite male country artist. Other no-shows included Taylor Swift and Kendrick Lamar. Lamar went into the ceremony with a leading 10 nominations. He earned one award, favorite hip-hop song, for 'Not Like Us'. The festivities opened with host Jennifer Lopez singing and dancing to a six-minute medley of 23 hits by the nominees. The songs included Eilish's 'Birds of a Feather', Sabrina Carpenter's 'Espresso' and Beyonce's 'Texas Hold 'Em'. Janet Jackson was honoured with the Icon award, a tribute to artists with global influence. 'I don't consider myself an icon,' Jackson said on stage. 'The one thing that I hope for is that I'm an inspiration for others to follow their dreams and succeed.' Eighty-year-old Rod Stewart received a lifetime achievement honour and danced and sang to his pop hit 'Forever Young', which was released in 1984. Stewart said that when he started his career, 'I had this burning ambition to sing.' 'That's all I wanted to do. I didn't want to be rich or famous,' he said.

South Korea court blocks K-pop group NewJeans from leaving agency
A South Korean court issued an injunction on Friday to stop members of K-pop group NewJeans from pursuing independent projects, marking the latest twist in a long-running dispute between the stars and their label that has gripped fans. The Seoul Central District Court upheld a request from the label ADOR to maintain its role managing the group and prohibit NewJeans' members from engaging in commercial activities without the label's consent, the court said in a statement. The five members of NewJeans announced their departure from ADOR last November, revealed a new name - NJZ - and promised to release a new song this month. Friday's ruling appears to throw that into doubt and the group said they would challenge the court's decision. "NJZ respects the court's ruling. However, we believe that the decision did not fully take into account the complete breakdown of trust the members have experienced toward ADOR," they said in an Instagram post. NewJeans has been caught up in infighting between executives of the agency's parent and the band's creative director who has now left ADOR. The K-pop controversy involving NewJeans made a string of headlines in South Korea and beyond last year, with accusations flying, audits and an emotional press conference by the band. The members have said they want to work with the creative director, accusing the firm of mistreatment. ADOR has denied such claims and said the contract remains in effect. ADOR is a subsidiary of powerhouse label HYBE, home to another global K-pop sensation BTS. ADOR thanked the court for its "judicious" decision. "With our status as NewJeans' exclusive agency now legally affirmed, we are fully committed to supporting the artists going forward," the company said in a statement, adding that it would be present at the members' performance on Sunday in Hong Kong.
