Chinese hotel told ‘wake-up service' of red pandas climbing onto guest beds must stop
Lehe Ledu Liangjiang Holiday Hotel, a popular family resort in Chongqing, has been called on by the local forestry bureau to stop one of its most popular services. Many guests are attracted to the hotel solely for its red panda wake-up experience.
The service involves bringing one of the hotel's red pandas up to a guest's bedroom in the morning, allowing the panda to roam freely around the room and climb onto the bed.
Reviews online for the resort show guests checking in just so they can book the experience and get up close to cute, furry animals from the comfort of their hotel room.
One British couple, Reanne and Ben, who run the YouTube channel On Tour With Dridgers, documented their experience with the red pandas at Lehe Ledu Liangjiang Holiday Hotel in April.
The video shows the red panda first climbing a tree in the small courtyard between rooms before it roams through the corridor to the couple's room with a staff member, where it is given apple chunks and hops onto the bed.
The YouTubers stroke the panda while it eats the apple from the palm of their hands.
'Oh my gosh, I can't believe I've got a panda on my bed,' Reanne says.
Despite the popularity of the service, the Chongqing Forestry Bureau has reportedly asked the hotel to immediately cease all close contact activities between the pandas and visitors.
Staff at the hotel told China Newsweek that four red pandas are kept onsite and take turns participating in the wake-up call room visits.
A member of staff will lead them up to the guest rooms, and visitors are allowed to interact with them for a few minutes before the animal is led away again.
There have been concerns about injury or disease transmission voiced by people online, but the hotel said that the red pandas are borrowed from a zoo, have been vaccinated and a cared for by dedicated staff.
The hotel also said that young children should always be accompanied by an adult during the wake-up call session.
Sun Quanhui, a scientist from the World Animal Protection organisation, told the Global Times that red pandas are a nationally protected wild species and should not be kept as pets or for tourism-related entertainment.
He added that the pandas are naturally sensitive animals, and being forced to interact with guests could trigger a stress response.
The forest bureau has sent a team to the hotel to conduct an on-site investigation, and said it will release the results of this visit.

Yatra Is Betting on Corporate Bookings to Steady Profits: What the Numbers Say
Yatra is trading some headline consumer volume for steadier, higher-value corporate bookings. The last quarter shows early signs that the shift is working. Indian online travel company Yatra plans to grow its corporate travel business further. Whole Time Director and CEO Dhruv Shringi said the strategy for the company would be to focus on higher-value, repeat corporate customers rather than price-driven leisure traffic. For the quarter ended June 30, Yatra reported a stronger share of gross bookings coming from its B2B business. Shringi said roughly 67% of gross bookings came from B2B and that the share could move toward 70% by the end of the fiscal year. Yatra is trying to make its platform part of corporate customers' routines. That creates what Shringi called 'switching costs,' which means extra effort for a company to move away once they're integrated. He noted that most competitors still serve companies in an offline way. Yatra says it has deeper technical integration with customers and higher online penetration. This, the company argues, gives it an edge as companies digitize travel processes. 'Most of our competitors still service customers in the offline manner with minimal amount of integration. That is why there is a large opportunity for us right now to go and penetrate the digital adoption that's happening in mass across the industry,' Shringi said at the earnings call on Monday. Last year, Yatra announced its acquisition of Globe All India Services (Globe Travels), a corporate travel services provider, for INR 1.28 billion ($15.25 million) in cash. Long-Term Clients and Stickiness Long-standing corporate customers are central to Yatra's strategy. Shringi noted the tenure among big clients as evidence of the company's stickiness. 'If I look at our top 100 customers, 73 of those have been with us for more than five years,' he said. Those relationships, the company believes, deliver predictable revenue and operating leverage once technical integrations are in place. While online travel platforms chased consumers with discounts and marketing, Yatra flipped the script. 'Our annual retention rate (for corporate travel) is upwards of 97%,' he added. 'That's what gives us this kind of high operating leverage in the business.' What is Driving Profits? Shringi pointed to two main drivers of margin improvement. First, Yatra reduced direct discounting to customers. Instead of heavy price cuts, the company relied more on offers delivered through banks and marketing partners. That lowered Yatra's cost of acquiring customers. Second, the business mix shifted toward higher-margin products: corporate airfares, hotels and packages. 'Hotels and packages have net margins closer to about 11% compared to about 3%-4% net margin for air. Our mix of hotels and packages, year over year, has changed from about 15% to about 20% of gross bookings,' he said. Those changes helped push the company's net margin and revenue-after-cost measures higher than the raw growth in gross bookings. Financial Results and Growth Levers Yatra reported a year-over-year rise in gross bookings of about 9% for the quarter, reversing earlier declines in overall volume. The recovery was uneven: air ticketing improved modestly, while hotels and packages grew faster. The company is leaning on cross-selling hotels to corporate customers as an immediate growth lever. Several recent corporate wins were 'hotel-led,' meaning customers first used Yatra for hotels, which then opened doors to broader travel services. Hotels and packages are currently the higher-margin, easier-to-cross-sell products for Yatra. On the quarter's key numbers: Revenue from operations grew by 108% year-on-year to INR 2.1 billion ($24 million) in the first quarter. Adjusted EBITDA surged 138% year-on-year to INR 249 million ($2.8 million). The company's net profit was up 296% compared to the same period last year to INR 160 million ($1.8 million). The company continued to expand its corporate client base and closed 34 new corporate accounts during the quarter with a potential annual billing of INR 2 billion ($23 million). What am I looking at? The performance of travel tech stocks within the ST 200. The index includes companies publicly traded across global markets including both online travel booking companies and B2B travel tech companies. Here's a look inside Disney Adventure, the company's largest cruise ship ever
Disney's largest cruise ship, Disney Adventure, will sail out of Singapore in December. Disney CEO Bob Iger said it's a chance for Disney's IP to "float" into the Southeast Asia market. The ship will have several attractions, including the "longest roller coaster at sea." Disney's betting big on Asia. CEO Bob Iger said Disney Adventure, the company's largest ship to date, is a real chance to expand into the Southeast Asian market. During Disney's Q3 earnings call, he described Disney Adventure as a floating ambassador for the company's intellectual property. "This will give us an opportunity to basically sell, or float, the Disney brand in all of its glory into a region that we think has huge Disney brand affinity," Iger said during Disney's Q3 earnings call. Disney Cruise Line has become an increasingly integral to the company's experiences division. It earned $347.3 million in profits last year, a notable step up from the $180.5 million earned in 2023. Disney Adventure is the seventh ship in Disney Cruise Line's fleet after Disney Wish set sail in 2022 and Disney Treasure in 2024. It can house an estimated 2,500 crew members and 6,700 passengers. Passengers on Disney Adventure will spend three to four nights immersed in their favorite Pixar, Marvel, and Disney stories. Disney Adventure, which sets sail on December 15, is dedicated to sea days. Here's a look at Disney Adventure. Wayfinder Bay is one of seven themed areas on Disney Adventure. Disney went all in when designing its first cruise ship with a homeport in Asia. Disney Adventure houses seven themed areas: Disney Imagination Garden, Town Square, San Fransokyo Street, Toy Story Place, Disney Discovery Reef, Marvel Landing, and Wayfinder Bay. Wayfinder Bay is an outdoor space inspired by Disney's "Moana" that features a bar and wading pool. The pool area doubles as a performance venue where guests can watch live shows like "Moana: Call of the Sea." Take a splash in Disney Discovery Reef. Disney Discovery Reef, a themed area in the back of the ship, draws from films like "The Little Mermaid" and "Finding Nemo" to explore the company's underwater stories. This area features numerous shopping and food options for guests, including Palo Café, a coffee bar inspired by the coastal town in Pixar's "Luca." Marvel fans can also find Cosmic Kebabs, a restaurant serving pitas and kebabs inspired by Marvel's "Ms. Marvel." The Avengers are on display at Marvel Landing. Disney Adventure is bringing Marvel superheroes to the sea. Marvel Landing is on the ship's upper deck, where three attractions are available to guests: Groot Galaxy Spin, Pym Quantum Racers, and Ironcycle Test Run. Ironcycle Test Run is Disney's first-ever cruise ship roller coaster. It's also the "longest roller coaster at sea" at over 820 feet long, according to the company. Woody and the "Toy Story" gang hang out on the upper deck. Fans of Disney's "Toy Story" franchise will feel right at home on Disney Adventure. Toy Story Place is a water wonderland for families with several options, including Sunnyside Family Pool, the Flying Saucer Splash Zone, and whirlpools. The area also welcomes passengers to zoom down Woody and Jessie's Wild Slides. San Francisco meets Tokyo in an area inspired by "Big Hero 6." Disney Adventure will feature an area that combines the "vibrant energy" of Tokyo with the "laid-back charm of San Francisco" in a nod to "Big Hero 6." Passengers can visit San Fransokyo Street to catch a film at Baymax Cinemas or participate in an immersive training simulator at the Big Hero Arcade. They can also stop by Duffy and Friends Shop and enter the Duffy and Friends Discovery Quest, which asks passengers to use clues to find lost items and potentially win a prize. Disney Adventure has multiple dining options for passengers. The cruise ship has two entertainment restaurants, including Hollywood Spotlight Club, where passengers can dine while interacting with Disney characters like Daisy Duck and Mickey Mouse. Other options include the Enchanted Summer Restaurant, inspired by Disney's Tangled and Frozen films, and Pixar Market Restaurant, which pays homage to the studios' films. Mowgli's Eatery, Stitch's 'Ohana Grill, Bewitching Boba and Brews, and Mike & Sulley's — Flavors of Asia are also places to try. Disney Adventure has venues geared for adults. Although Disney Adventure offers family fun, specific venues were made for the 18+ crowd. Palo Trattoria is an adults-only Italian restaurant between Disney Discovery Reef and Wayfinder Bay. Inspired by the "Peter Pan" villain Captain Hook, Buccaneer Bar is a lounge where adults can unwind and relax. Watch a production or two at the Walt Disney Theatre. The Walt Disney Theatre will put on two productions for passengers on Disney Adventure. "Remember" is a musical starring the robots from Disney-Pixar's "Wall-E" and other characters. "Disney Seas the Adventure" is a musical featuring songs and characters from Disney's catalog. The theatre is in Town Square, which is inspired by Disney's vast collection of princesses and fairy tales. Sweat it out with Baymax in the Disney Imagination Garden. The Disney Imagination Garden, another themed area, features a stage with three deck screens. Among the interactive shows appearing on that stage is the Baymax Super Exercise Expo, a musical exercise show inspired by "Big Hero 6." Passengers can also watch shows like Captain Jack Sparrow & the Siren Queen and Mickey's Color Spin Dance Party. After a long day, get some sleep in one of Disney Adventure's staterooms. Disney said most staterooms include a split-bathroom concept, elevated bed frames, and a menu highlighting essentials for families with small children. "Each stateroom will feature thoughtful amenities, family-friendly conveniences and special Disney touches," the company said in a blog post. Passengers looking for a particularly elegant trip can take advantage of the concierge experience, which offers exclusive perks like priority boarding. Read the original article on Business Insider
