Festival rush begins early: Long waitlists on trains to and from Visakhapatnam
Even 50 days ahead of Dasara, railway reservations have become difficult for passengers. Berths in several trains from Hyderabad to Vijayawada, Visakhapatnam, and Bhubaneswar are either on long waiting lists or marked as 'regret'.
Around two lakh people from North Andhra, working in various cities and towns across both Telugu states, as well as Tamil Nadu and Karnataka, return home during major festivals like Dasara and Sankranti to celebrate with their families.
Migration from the North Andhra region is higher compared to other regions, and many migrant labourers and employees travel with their families during the festive season.
Most have planned to return to their native places before Dasara, on Oct 2 (Thursday). Travel plans are concentrated around the weekend from Sept 27 (Saturday) to Sept 30 (Tuesday). Even for the return journey from North Andhra, several trains are already showing waiting lists.

The Secunderabad (Charlapalli)–Silchar Superfast Express shows reservation regret. The Falaknuma Superfast Express (12704) is on 'regret' status from Sept 27 to Oct 1, and has a waiting list for Dasara and the following days. Berths in trains like the Nanded–Sambalpur (20810), East Coast Express, Konark, and Visakha Express are also on waiting lists.
The Chennai Central to Visakhapatnam Superfast (12840) train shows 'regret' status on Sept 27, 28, and even on Sept 30.
The Coromandel Express is in a similar situation. Weekly express trains such as Chennai Egmore–Visakhapatnam (12375) and Kanyakumari–Howrah (CAPE HWH SF EXP 12666) have already closed reservations. Other weekly superfast trains, like the Perambur–Visakhapatnam (running between Tirunelveli and Purulia) and the Guwahati Express (12509), are on waiting lists.
Reservations also show 'regret' status on trains like Bangalore–Howrah (12864), the Prasanthi Express (18464), and the weekly Anga Express (12253). Even though the Railways has extended some special train services until the end of Dussehra, the passenger rush remains extremely high.

Commute on highways is set to get a major update, with the National Highways Authority of India ( NHAI ) rolling out the FASTag Annual Pass August 15, which also marks India's Independence Day. The FASTag annual pass was announced in June this year. It is a prepaid toll plan, exclusively for non-commercial private vehicles such as cars, jeeps, and vans. Announcing the new pass, Minister of Road Transport & Highways Nitin Gadkari said that it is aimed to address 'long-standing concerns regarding toll plazas located within a 60 km range and simplifies toll payments through a single, affordable transaction. By reducing wait times, easing congestion, and minimizing disputes at toll plazas, the Annual Pass aims to deliver a faster and smoother travel experience for millions of private vehicle owners.' Live Events The pass can directly be linked to an existing FASTag, as long as it is active and linked to your vehicle registration number. The plan applies only to national highways and expressways under NHAI and the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH). For example, Delhi–Mumbai Expressway, Mumbai–Nashik, Mumbai–Surat, and Mumbai–Ratnagiri routes. On state highways or municipal toll roads, FASTag will work as usual, with normal chrges applicable. Some of the state-run highways include the Mumbai–Pune Expressway, Mumbai–Nagpur Expressway (Samruddhi Mahamarg), Atal Setu, Agra–Lucknow Expressway, Bengaluru–Mysore Expressway, and Ahmedabad–Vadodara Expressway. These are run by state authorities. The plan avoids repeated online recharges, making it useful for daily commuters. The pass is non-transferable and works only with the FASTag linked to a single registered vehicle. How to buy FASTag Annual Pass online? Go to the Rajmarg Yatra app or the NHAI/MoRTH website. Login by entering details like your vehicle number and FASTag ID. It must be noted that FASTag must be active, correctly installed, and linked to your vehicle. Next, pay Rs 3,000 online using UPI, debit/credit card, or net banking. The pass will get attached to your existing FASTag. An SMS will confirm activation on August 15. FASTag Annual Pass: Rules and limits From August 15 onwards, one trip will be deducted each time your vehicle crosses a FASTag-enabled toll plaza under NHAI or MoRTH. Once the limit of 200 trips or the one-year mark is reached, the system automatically switches back to the regular pay-per-use FASTag. Important rules include: Only for private vehicles: Not valid for commercial vehicles. Non-transferable & non-refundable: Works only for the registered vehicle. Limited coverage: Only valid on eligible national highways and expressways. No auto-renewal: Users must reapply after expiry.
