"Unnecessarily provoke other leaders" Karnataka Minster slams BJP leaders over Chittapur incident
Bengaluru (Karnataka) [India], May 25 (ANI): A day after the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) unit in Karnataka staged 'Kalaburagi Chalo' demanding removal of Karnataka Minister Priyank Kharge from state Cabinet over the Chittapur incident, Congress leader and state minister Sharan Prakash Patil on Sunday accused the BJP leaders of 'unnecessarily provoking' other leaders.
'... They (BJP) are responsible for the situation, as they (BJP) unnecessarily provoke other leaders. Whatever happened in Chittapur was neither provoked by Priyank (Kharge) or any other Congress leaders...' Patil told reporters on Sunday.
Karnataka BJP President BY Vijayendra on Saturday slammed the Siddaramaiah-led Congress government in the state for 'dictatorial and rowdy' attitude over the alleged attack on BJP leader and Karnataka Leader of Opposition (LoP), Chalavadi Narayanswamy, in Chittar constituency on May 21.
The BJP state chief said that the incident reflected the ruling Congress government's 'dictatorial attitude,' and that Priyank Kharge should tender his resignation.
'We have staged protests against the actions of the ruling Congress government, especially against Minister Priyank Kharge. The Leader of Opposition was attacked in Priyank Kharge's constituency--Chittar, and we strongly condemn this violence,' Vijayendra said.
'We demand that Priyank Kharge resigns immediately. They keep speaking about BR Ambedkar. If they have faith in Baba Sahab Ambedkar, he should tender his resignation because of the rowdy attitude he and his supporters have shown. We have given a memorandum to the Governor,' he added.
The BJP, on Saturday, demonstrated a major protest titled 'Kalaburagi Chalo' here, demanding the removal of Karnataka Minister Priyank Kharge from the state Cabinet over the recent incident in Chittapur.
The protest comes in the wake of the May 21 incident, where Congress workers allegedly laid siege to a guest house in Chittapur, Kalaburagi district, where the Leader of Opposition in the Karnataka Legislative Council, Chalavadi Narayanswamy, was staying.
Reacting to the incident, Narayanswamy compared his treatment during previous protests with the current political atmosphere.
He said, 'Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah was once the Leader of Opposition. Back then, during our government, when a small protest happened in Kodagu, he was arrested, but we still gave him full security and treated him with respect. But now, Congress leaders like Mallikarjun Kharge are making disrespectful remarks. He even called RSS and BJP supporters 'dogs' and claimed none of them took part in the freedom struggle.'
Echoing similar concerns, BJP leader Rajkumar Patil accused Minister Priyank Kharge of misusing his official position to target political rivals. Speaking at a press conference on Friday, Patil alleged that Kharge orchestrated attacks on BJP leaders, including Narayanswamy, during what he described as a peaceful protest in Chittapur.
'BJP leaders, including Narayanswamy, were deliberately harassed during a peaceful Satyagraha in Chittapur. Congress-backed individuals attacked his car and even tried to assault him,' Patil alleged.
Calling for urgent action, Patil said, 'The Chief Minister has to take strict action. All those police officers involved must be suspended, especially those who mishandled the 'Darna Dutt Satyagraha'. Those responsible for the attack should be arrested under the Gunda Act.'
He also criticised the Congress-led state government for failing to act on multiple complaints against Priyank Kharge.
'Only those who are with Congress receive protection. Whether under Congress rule or the Constitution, nothing seems to function properly in Kalaburagi. The entire area is witnessing illegal activity,' Patil said.
Claiming that both ministers and citizens are fearful, he added, 'Some ministers are scared to come here. People are afraid that Priyank Kharge has kept some people under his control. Those people come and disrupt protests like the Dharna Satyagraha.'
'Until Priyank resigns or is removed from the Cabinet, Siddaramaiah ji will not act. We will continue our protest,' Patil asserted. (ANI)

Foreign aid and financial woes
When reports last week stated that the Chief Minister's Relief Fund of Maharashtra had been allowed to receive foreign contributions under the Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Act (FCRA), the CPI(M)-led Left government in Kerala was quick to depict this as yet another act of discrimination against the southern State by the Centre. It recalled that the Centre had declined the Kerala government's plea for accepting foreign aid in the days following the 2018 floods — a catastrophe that left large-scale destruction in its wake. Kerala Finance Minister K.N. Balagopal said that while his State welcomed the approval for Maharashtra, it believed that it was unbecoming of the Central government to indulge in 'political bias' in moments of great crisis. He stressed that it is important that the Centre treats every State equally. He added that it was unfortunate that politics, and not the scale of disasters, had become the yardstick in such matters. This was an apparent reference to the fact that the BJP-led Mahayuti coalition governs Maharashtra. In the aftermath of the floods, the Centre had sparked a controversy by declining permission for Kerala to accept foreign aid, including a reported ₹700 crore offer from the UAE. Kerala's discomfiture with the foreign aid nod to Maharashtra is the latest episode in a protracted stand-off between the State and Centre. Kerala believes that it is being discriminated against, and denied its fair share of financial resources by the Centre. It has repeatedly complained about drastic cuts in financial allocations to it, and the 'unfair limits' placed on its fiscal space. The Kerala government had taken the battle over restrictions on its borrowing capacity to the Supreme Court. On the political front, the CPI(M)-led Left Democratic Front (LDF) has consistently accused the Centre of attempting to 'financially choke' Kerala. It has blamed the Centre's skewed policies for the State's financial woes. The State government believes that recent Union Budgets have also caused disappointment to the State, as they have ignored pressing demands on the financial front. For instance, Kerala's plea for a ₹24,000 crore economic package to prop up its finances were not mentioned in the 2024-25 and 2025-26 Union Budgets. More recently, the government slammed the Union Finance Ministry for cutting a little over ₹3,300 crore from its borrowing limit for the 2025-26 fiscal under the pretext of the Guarantee Redemption Fund. The foreign aid nod to Maharashtra also presented the LDF government an opportunity to reiterate its dismay over the Centre's approach to the deadly July 30, 2024, landslides in Wayanad district. In the aftermath of the tragedy, the Kerala government had announced plans for a structured rehabilitation programme, which included the building of townships with amenities for survivors. Mr. Balagopal said that the people of Kerala had, on two instances, expected Prime Minister Narendra Modi to announce special aid to Wayanad: first, when he visited that district in August last year; and second, when he visited Thiruvananthapuram to inaugurate the seaport at Vizhinjam. On both occasions, their hopes were dashed, he said. Time and again, Kerala has accused the BJP government of paying scant regard to cooperative federalism — the driving spirit of Centre-State relations. It is evident that the trust deficit between the two entities on financial matters persists, notwithstanding the much-discussed breakfast meeting that Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan hosted for Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman at New Delhi in March. It remains to be seen how Kerala's financial grievances concerning Union government policies will be addressed, as the southern State inches closer to a frenetic election season. The by-election in the Nilambur Assembly constituency in Malappuram district is scheduled to take place on June 19; elections to the rural and urban local bodies are scheduled to take place towards the end of 2025; and the Legislative Assembly polls are set to take place in the first half of 2026. In matters of State finances, Kerala will be keenly watching the recommendations made by the 16th Finance Commission led by Arvind Panagariya later this year. The State has sought a higher share of resources, arguing that its share of the divisible pool was brought down to 1.92% under the 15th Commission from 3.88% under the 10th.

Army to get new air defence boost with Rs 30,000 crore QR-SAM deal
NEW DELHI: The defence ministry will soon take up the case for a preliminary nod to a Rs 30,000 crore proposal to procure three regiments of the new indigenous quick reaction surface to air missile (QR-SAM) systems for the Army. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The Rajnath Singh-led defence acquisitions council will consider granting acceptance of necessity (AoN) for the highly-mobile QR-SAM systems, which are designed to intercept hostile fighters, helicopters and drones at a range up to 25-30 km, later this month. The move comes soon after India's existing multi-layered air defence network played a crucial role in thwarting multiple waves of Turkish-origin drones and Chinese missiles launched by Pakistan during Operation Sindoor - the May 7-10 hostilities. The and the Army have over the last three-four years tested the QR-SAM systems against high-speed aerial targets mimicking various types of threats to evaluate their capability under different day and night operational scenarios. Defence PSUs Bharat Electronics and Bharat Dynamics will co-produce the QR-SAM systems. "The QR-SAM systems can operate on the move with search and track capability and fire at short halts. They are tailor-made to move along with tanks and infantry combat vehicles to provide them air defence in the tactical battlefield," an official said. The Army Air Defence (AAD), which performed exceedingly well during Operation Sindoor, in fact, requires 11 regiments of the QR-SAM, even as it progressively also inducts regiments of the indigenous Akash system, which has an interception range of about 25-km at present. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The induction of the QR-SAM systems will add to the existing air defence network of the IAF and the Army, which ranges from the long-range Russian S-400 'Triumf' surface-to-air missile systems (380 km interception range) and Barak-8 medium range SAM systems (70 km), jointly developed with Israel, to the Russian shoulder-fired Igla-S missiles (6 km), the upgraded L-70 anti-aircraft guns (3.5 km) and the indigenous integrated drone detection and interdiction systems (1km-2 km). While the DRDO is also readying the very short-range air defence missile systems (VSHORADS), which have a 6 km interception range, the real game-changer will be an air defence system with a 350 km range being developed under the ambitious Project Kusha. India plans to operationally deploy this long-range system by 2028-2029, with the defence ministry in Sept 2023 approving the AoN for procurement of five of its squadrons for the IAF at a cost of Rs 21,700 crore, as was first reported by TOI.
