Fallen utility wires close two I-495 ramps
Two Interstate 495 ramps in Wrentham are closed and expected to remain so for a good part of Wednesday as crews work to repair fallen wires.
About 350 homes and businesses, including Plainridge Casino in Plainville, were also reported without electricity.
MassDOT Wednesday morning issued an alert about the temporary closure of the exit ramps for Route 1 southbound to I-495 northbound, and I-495 northbound to Route 1 southbound.
'The closure is expected to be in place throughout most of the day to allow crews to make utility repairs to downed wires,' MassDOT said.
It was unclear what caused utility poles to begin leaning on wires, and utility workers were installing new poles.
A total of 324 customers were reported without electricity in Wrentham and 26 in Plainville, National Grid said.
The power failure was recorded about 3 a.m. and electricity was expected to be restored by 8:30 a.m., the utility said.
Temporary signs and variable message boards have been deployed to advise commuters to seek alternate routes, the department said.
Drivers traveling through the affected areas should expect delays, reduce speed and use caution.

Jury skepticism of experts could determine outcome in Karen Read murder trial: former judge
Whenever there's a battle of the experts, it's the jurors who hold the winning hand, according to a retired Massachusetts judge. And that's shaping up to be the case in Karen Read's retrial on murder charges in the death of her former boyfriend, 46-year-old Boston Police Officer John O'Keefe. Read, 45, is accused of hitting him with an SUV and leaving outside a house party at 34 Fairview Road in Canton, Massachusetts, as he died of a skull fracture and hypothermia during a blizzard on Jan. 29, 2022. Dr. Daniel Wolfe, a director at the ARCCA crash reconstruction firm, testified that the results of numerous tests he conducted to try and reconstruct the alleged crash that killed O'Keefe came back with "inconsistent" results. But special prosecutor Hank Brennan tore into the validity of his methods during cross-examination, noting he used a dummy that was significantly smaller than O'Keefe, alternated between different types of dummy arms without noting that under direct examination and conducted only one test at each speed rather than multiple tests to check for consistent results. A key moment in his testimony came not while discussing his findings, but when Brennan asked him about something Read said in a video clip played earlier in the trial, according to Jack Lu, a retired Massachusetts Superior Court Judge and Boston College law professor. "There's Brennan's theory – the taillight 'impaled' [O'Keefe] on the nose," he told Fox News Digital. "Read picked glass out of [his] nose, and [his] nose bled – from her video statement." Brennan played video from one of Wolfe's accident reconstructions that showed plastic fragments flying away from the vehicle after impacting a crash dummy's arm. "When the taillight is shattered and it spreads through the air, does it have the potential to impale a person, for example, on their nose?" Brennan asked. "I think that would be unlikely," Wolfe replied. As part of the prosecution's case, Brennan played a clip of Read telling an interviewer she pulled a "piece of glass" out of O'Keefe's nose and that it started bleeding. Wolfe's task has been to discredit the prosecution's core allegation that Read slammed into O'Keefe in reverse with her 2021 Lexus LX 570 SUV and left him to die on the ground in a blizzard on Jan. 29, 2022. "Juries have great powers of observation, and a fundamental depth of experience seldom seen in American life," Lu told Fox News Digital. "Partially because of how many jurors there are. I predict that the jury will conclude that both accident reconstructionists' conclusions are not worthy of belief in a jury trial." GET REAL-TIME UPDATES DIRECTLY ON THE TRUE CRIME HUB The defense is also aiming to sow reasonable doubt in the prosecution's crash experts, Dr. Judson Welcher and Shanon Burgess from a firm called Aperture. Welcher testified last week that he believes "[O'Keefe's injuries are] consistent with being struck by a Lexus and also contacting a hard surface, such as frozen ground." Wolfe found that the injuries were inconsistent when stacked up against the damage to Read's SUV as well as the damage to O'Keefe's clothing – which prosecutors allege had fragments of taillight plastic embedded in it. Lu said that he expects jury instructions to include a note that the experts don't decide the facts – jurors do. "Juries are not in the least bit cowed by experts," he said. "To the contrary, they view them with skepticism." Especially "hired guns," he added. Jurors will be looking at the case as a whole, but while Lu said he believes Brennan scored a victory on the day, the defense has a significant advantage. "The defense need not prove anything; they merely must establish reasonable doubt," said Mark Bederow, a New York City defense lawyer who is representing Canton blogger and Read ally Aidan Kearney. "But over the course of a few hours, Dr. Wolfe cast serious doubt by methodically dismantling the key premise of the prosecution case – through multiple scientific examinations and effective video he offered support for his opinion that the damage to the taillight was not consistent with the collision alleged by the prosecution." Read's team is expected to rest their case next week. She could face up to life in prison if convicted of the top charge.

California gun control bill that could ban popular Glock pistol sales moves forward
( — A bill that could ban the sale of the most popular handgun in the U.S. is potentially on its way to becoming law after it passed through the California State Assembly on Tuesday. Assembly Bill 1127, also referred to by many people as the Glock Ban Bill, was authored by Jesse Gabriel (D-Encino) and would prohibit licensed firearms dealers from selling guns that can be 'easily converted by hand or with common household tools' into a machine gun. Although the Glock isn't specifically mentioned in the written legislation, it falls into that category of firearms. New gun laws won't be enforced by Sutter County Sheriff's Office 'I am pleased to be presenting AB 1127, which will protect communities from mass shootings and gun violence by encouraging gun manufacturers to prevent the conversion of their firearms to dangerous automatic weapons,' Gabriel said during an Assembly Standing Committee hearing. He continued, 'Automatic weapons are exceptionally lethal and capable of firing hundreds of rounds per minute. They are illegal in California. Unfortunately, some semi-automatic firearms feature a dangerous design flaw that allows them to be converted to fully automatic weapons through an attachment of a cheap and easy-to-use device, known as a switch.' Northern California police warn of $1,000 fine per illegal firework amid Fourth of July holiday The Glock is infamous for its easy-alteration capabilities by using a 'Glock switch'. In 2022, a converted Glock was reportedly used in a mass shooting that occurred just blocks from the California State Capitol Building. It left six people dead and several others injured. 'Sadly, certain companies in the gun industry have known about this issue for decades and have done nothing meaningful to address it,' Gabriel said. 'This common-sense legislation will ensure that the gun industry is held accountable and that we're doing everything we possibly can to protect our communities from mass shootings.' AB 1127 is supported by organizations like Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America, Everytown for Gun Safety Action Fund, and Voices for Progress. However, other groups such as the National Association for Gun Rights and Gun Owners of California Inc. are in opposition. 'AB 1127 is a blatant attack on your right to own one of the most common self-defense firearms in America,' Gun Owners of California said on social media before the bill passed through the Assembly. 'This bill targets semiautomatic pistols used by millions of law-abiding gun owners—and it's being pushed under the false pretense of 'safety'.' NAGR vowed to fight back against the proposed legislation. 'California (is) pushing rapidly towards a total ban of Glock pistols,' NAGR said on social media. 'The most popular firearm in the country. If you think there is a line they will not cross, think again.' AB 1127 passed on a vote of 58-17, with Democrat support and Republican opposition. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. South Attleboro man killed in head-on crash in Wareham
A South Attleboro man was killed in a highway crash Thursday in Wareham. Matthew Burns, 49, died when his motorcycle collided with an oncoming car on Route 28 or Cranberry Highway in Wareham late Thursday afternoon, the Plymouth County District Attorney's Office said. Burns was traveling northbound on Cranberry Highway when witnesses reported he lost control of the motorcycle and collided with a Mercedes compact SUV traveling in the other direction, authorities said. Wareham Police and State Police officers found Burns unresponsive and pronounced him dead following CPR. The driver of the Mercedes was being treated at an area hospital. The driver of the SUV, an unnamed woman, told police she saw several motorcyclists on the opposite side of the road and when going around a bend, one of the motorcyclists lost control of his motorcycle and swerved into her lane. She told police she couldn't avoid colliding with the motorcycle, officials said. There were four other motorcyclists with Burns at the time of the crash, and one suffered minor injuries, they added. Part of the highway was shut down because of the crash, which is still under investigation by State Police. It was the second motorcycle accident in Wareham this week and the third this year. A motorcyclist collided with an oncoming truck on Glen Charlie Road Wednesday and a 20-year-old Rochester man was killed in a motorcycle accident March 4, also on Cranberry Highway.
