Dan Biggar says he's 'struggling to get to grips' with the decision to call up Owen Farrell to the British and Irish Lions squad.
The 33-year-old has been drafted into Andy Farrell's plans following an injury to Elliot Daly, who was forced off after hurting his arm in the win over the Queensland Reds on Wednesday.
Scans revealed Daly had fractured his arm in Brisbane, meaning he'll play no further part in the tour Down Under. Sign up to Inside Welsh rugby on Substack for the exclusive five-week tour diary from Japan and Australia.
The decision to call up Farrell, however, has seemingly divided opinion, and former Wales star Biggar, a veteran of two tours, admits he's not convinced it's the right call.
"It's big news," he told Sky Sports. "But I'm struggling to get to grips with the sense of it.
"No one's doubting that Owen's an amazing character and an amazing player with the career he's had.
"But he hasn't played Test rugby for over two years. He hasn't played any form of rugby for the last couple of months.
"The person he's replacing doesn't play in any of the same positions. So I'm just struggling to get to grips with where the sense of it is."
Biggar acknowledges that the move could be more to do with Farrell's impact behind the scenes rather than his potential contributions on the pitch.
But he warns there's still a risk his inclusion could upset the over balance of the squad.
"Is Andy Farrell lacking some sort of leadership in the team? Does he need some strong characters? Does he think that if it comes down to a drawn series coming into that final week, does he need strong people that have been there and done it before?
"It seems to me there's a lot of risk in this play and not a huge amount of reward in that you've got Marcus and Fin Smith. Where do they feel like they sit in the pecking order now?
"When they close the bedroom door and go to bed and turn the light off at night. What are they thinking? Are they thinking 'is he coming in to replace me?'

"There's lots of options in those positions and it just feels like it doesn't really make sense, and I think everybody is saying the same thing."
Well, not quite everybody.
Indeed, former Lions team-mate Jonathan Davies, who played with the Englishman during the series win over the Wallabies and the tied series with New Zealand believes Farrell's experience could prove invaluable.
"What Owen brings in is a huge amount of experience," he told The Good, The Bad, and The Rugby podcast: "He knows how to win a series, and I don't think there's anyone else on tour that does.
"When I played with him in 2017, he gave me confidence to really execute my roles and I think that's why I was able to play on that tour in 2017 my best rugby in my career. There's no grey areas with Owen.
"The risk is, does it leave them open in the back three? I don't think so when you look at the amount of back three players they have.

"The midweek group needs direction and leadership, because it's very easy to get those splits in camp. The senior players that have been on tour previously in the two tours I was in, understood how important it was for the midweek team to really stay attached and to stay focused in training and not to lose them.
"So if Owen isn't going to play in the Test team, it might be a case of 'Right. We want him to drive standards in and around the environment and the boys under a bit of pressure'."

Ben Doak outshines £270m of new Liverpool talent with goal
Florian Wirtz's first look at Anfield gave fans a glimpse of why the club made him their – and with add-ons potentially a British – record signing with some clever touches and interplay and almost the opening goal. Liverpool showcased £270million-worth of new signings in the 3-2 friendly victory over Athletic Bilbao but the goals still went to established Premier League winners Mohamed Salah – who also missed a late penalty – and Cody Gakpo. Head coach Arne Slot believes the Germany international will replace the creativity they lost from the departure of Trent Alexander-Arnold to Real Madrid. 'I think there is always room for improvement in every department and we have added a few, in my opinion, extra weapons,' said the Dutchman. 'Florian has a lot of creativity in the final third and we have lost with Trent a lot of creativity from the back. 'Trent's crosses and picking out runners was so special – Flo has this quality in a totally different position. He brings that creativity.' Wirtz's fellow new signings also showed they were settling in well as Jeremie Frimpong linked up well with Salah, fellow full-back Milos Kerkez was solid and Hugo Ekitike showed flexibility across the forward line. Wirtz headed onto the crossbar before Ekitike crossed for Salah to fire home and Gakpo scored twice after the break after Oihan Sancet had levelled. Read more: Liverpool went into the double-header with just one recognised centre-back with Virgil van Dijk ill and Joe Gomez injured and looked vulnerable at set-pieces, with Maroan Sannadi heading an equaliser from a corner. 'The other games pre-season we have conceded a few too many chances but today we hardly conceded anything at all and that pleased me as well,' added Slot. 'So to concede two set-piece goals in the second game is not what you want, especially if you play Crystal Palace next week who are a team who are very strong on set-pieces. That's another thing to work on.' In both matches Diogo Jota, who died in a car crash last month, was remembered with fans standing and clapping and singing the forward's song. When the clock showed 20, action on the pitch also halted as players and officials joined in the applause. Liverpool's second string won 4-1 earlier, after an erroneous fire alarm had evacuated the Main Stand before kick-off, with 16-year-old Rio Ngumoha continuing his impressive pre-season form with a goal after just 87 seconds. Ben Doak, three years his senior, also scored while there were goals for Darwin Nunez and Harvey Elliott, two players whose futures appear to be away from Anfield. Nunez, who has been linked with Al Hilal for a while with AC Milan also opening talks over the Uruguay international, thumped the badge on his shirt in front of the Kop while Elliott was the last to leave the pitch having blown kisses to all four sides of the ground.

Alan Shearer has sent Arne Slot telling message about Liverpool's Alexander Isak pursuit
Alexander Isak is the subject of interest from Liverpool after taking the Premier League by storm, and Newcastle legend Alan Shearer has predicted even bigger things are in store for the Swede Alan Shearer has tipped Newcastle ace Alexander Isak to develop even further as Liverpool continue their pursuit of the Swedish sensation. The striker is reportedly valued at a whopping £150million amid interest from the Reds, who recently saw their opening bid for the player rejected. Liverpool have already splashed out on Florian Wirtz in a deal that could break the British transfer record. They've also bolstered their squad with the additions of Jeremie Frimpong, Milos Kerkez, Hugo Ekitike and Giorgi Mamardashvili. Arne Slot 's side had a hefty offer for Isak worth £110m plus add-ons turned down, and it's now up in the air as to whether they'll come back with a higher bid. Newcastle are holding their ground given the player has three years left to run on his contract, yet Isak appears to feel unsettled. Following a January sit-down with Isak, Tyneside icon Shearer was convinced the forward has even more potential to unlock. And that could make for an exciting prospects if Liverpool manage to successfully navigate his signing this summer. "He's like an assassin, the way he puts chances away, but what I really liked from talking to him is that you can tell he is still looking for ways to improve his game at the age of 25," Shearer told BBC Sport (via the Liverpool Echo) when speaking about their conversation. "I feel that Isak has put himself into the ' world class' category now, with his performances for Newcastle over the past two seasons. "Along with Mohamed Salah at Liverpool and Manchester City's Erling Haaland, he is one of the three standout forwards we have got in the Premier League. "I remember talking to Isak this time last year [2023], and Howe and his assistant Jason Tindall walked in and said one of the things he could do better at was tap-ins, those kind of two or three-yard finishes where you are just in the right place at the right time. "Isak felt the same way, and he has clearly worked on that, in terms of his positioning and where you need to be to get on the end of balls into the box. As he says himself, small details can change a lot. He feels it has got him other types of goals, as well as more goals. "I loved hearing about that – and all the different aspects of his game – 12 months on. You can understand why he keeps getting better and better as a player." The Isak situation remains a bold gamble, particularly after he told Newcastle he wanted to weigh up his options elsewhere. He also skipped their recent pre-season tour of Asia and began training individually with his previous club, Real Sociedad. One crucial element that could decide whether he stays or departs St. James' Park is Newcastle's ability to land a proper replacement. RB Leipzig's Benjamin Sesko is currently leading the race, with the club submitting a club-record bid for the Slovenian. The latest developments surrounding Sesko suggest he's willing to join either Newcastle or Manchester United, who have maintained a long-standing interest in him. And German publication Bild has reported Sesko would favour a switch to Old Trafford.
