JUST three months ago, PE teacher Matthew Starkey was looking forward to a new house, a new job and a new chapter with his girlfriend.
But the 32-year-old's dreams were shattered when a seemingly simple football injury was diagnosed as stage four spinal cancer and he was told he only had a year left to live.

Within hours, Matthew had proposed to partner Carrie Fleming and the couple set a wedding date for next month.
Now, as the sports fan works to complete his bucket list, he is sharing his story on social media and raising cash in a bid to find a treatment that could extend his life.
Brave Matthew, whose Instagram account, @fastandtumorous, has 13,000 followers, says: 'The reaction has been absolutely incredible.
'You can't have a tumour without humour. When they told me how long I had to live, I was determined to defy the odds.
'I want to spread the message that no matter how insignificant you feel an issue is, get it checked.
'I refuse to put a timeframe on my life. The tumour may be fast-growing but I'm staying positive.
'The diagnosis was terminal — I aim to prove them wrong.'
Matthew dreams of a honeymoon in Italy and a trip to see the Northern Lights.
A GoFundMe page with a £50,000 target has been set up to help with his bucket list — and to contribute funding to clinical trials.
He has also vowed to walk up the aisle to give Carrie, 29, a 'fairytale' moment on their wedding day.
Matthew revealed he was fit and active until last November, working out at the gym four times a week, as well as playing golf and football.
What is myeloma?
'I want to make some memories together'
When one of his legs began to ache after a game of seven-a-side, he assumed he had pulled a muscle.
He later had surgery for a collapsed nerve, but still the pain persisted.
In February, Matthew's right leg gave way and tests showed he had an aggressive cancer in his spine.
The tumour, a glioblastoma, usually starts in the brain — and only originates in the spine for fewer than ten people in the UK each year.
By now unable to walk, Matthew, who teaches business, IT and PE, had an op at Belfast's Royal Victoria Hospital, where he also popped the question to Carrie.
He says: 'I didn't want to waste any time. I didn't have a ring on me, but she said yes.'

More surgery gave Matthew, from Belfast, some respite from the pain but, within weeks, it returned so severely he needed a wheelchair.
It was then he decided to share his journey and asked a nurse to record him on his phone talking about what he was going through.
Matthew has now undergone daily chemotherapy and 30 sessions of radiotherapy in a bid to stabilise the cancer, and will have a scan this summer to find out if it worked.
But with chemo the only remaining option for him in the UK, he is looking at treatments abroad, too.
He says: 'They will be expensive. I am raising the money in the hope I could get accepted on to a clinical trial that could extend my life.
'They can't remove the tumour, so it will always be there but, with treatment, I hope there's a chance it can be put into remission.
'Carrie and I have moved into a new home, but we need to adapt it for my wheelchair and I want to make some memories together.'
Matthew is also raising money for Friends Of The Cancer Centre, a local charity that funds life-changing projects for people affected by the disease.
He hopes to complete September's Belfast half-marathon in his wheelchair for the cause.
He says: 'They've shown nothing but compassion, and I want to try to help them. I'd be so grateful for any help from Sun on Sunday readers. I plan to fight this all the way.'

New Love Island bombshell Toni reveals crippling health battle that saw her rushed to hospital

Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) LOVE Island bombshell Toni Laites has opened about her chronic health condition ahead of entering the villa. The American star, 24, is set to enter the Mallorca house as the first bombshell of this year's series – and is ready to bag a British boy as she believes they're "more polite with better manners" than their American counterparts. She said ahead of entering the show: "I have ulcerative colitis. I had to go to hospital the same week as my senior prom. "They told me, 'You can't go' and then they said, 'Surprise, you're going to prom!' "Nothing that exciting happens in Connecticut, so it was a big deal and a few articles were written about me." "What I hope people see from me being on Love Island is that not all illnesses are visible," she added. "It doesn't have to hold you back, you can travel etc…I live my life day-to-day like anyone else." In 2018, Toni was taken to prom straight from the hospital at Connecticut Children's Medical Center, with the team looking after her making sure she was primped and primed for the event. She wrote a gold sequinned mermaid gown for the event, and posed with her doctors before going. The hospital later shared photos of her getting ready on Instagram, writing: "After spending a week inpatient for a flare up of #UlcerativeColitis, 17-year old Toni Laites of Newington was told she would be unable to attend her her team of doctors and nurses at Connecticut Children's banded together to grant her a therapeutic leave, giving Toni the opportunity to experience the Cinderella prom she always dreamed of." Toni has said she's entering the Love Island UK villa because dating in the States is "a mess" – particularly after moving from Connecticut to Florida and then Las Vegas, Nevada. Love rats & machete arrests: Love Island's most DRAMATIC launch ever?! "I live in cities that are fast-paced and party places; Las Vegas and Florida," she explained. "People are here for a good time, not a long time. I live in Sin City! "I do love Las Vegas. I've met some of the greatest people I've ever met there. I'm willing to relocate, it would just break my heart to not have my job anymore." She warns that her "icks" are bad breath, bad hygiene, and not being dressing appropriately for a date. Toni will enter the house this week, with the series kicking off on Monday night with Maya Jama welcoming this year's line-up to the villa. Love Island starts Monday at 9pm on ITV, ITV2 and ITVX. What is Ulcerative Colitis? Here's what you need to know about Ulcerative Colitis.. Colitis is a condition where the colon and rectum become inflamed. The colon is the large intestine, or bowel, and the rectum is the end of the bowel where stools are stored. Ulcers can develop on the colon's lining and bleed and produce pus. Ulcerative colitis is a form of colitis that is caused by autoimmune inflammation (the body attacking itself), whereas colitis can be caused by a number of factors including infection. Ulcerative colitis is similar to another condition which causes inflammation of the gut - Crohn's disease. Symptoms can often be very mild for weeks or months but flare ups with extreme symptoms can cause a lot of pain and trouble for sufferers. The Geordie Shore star, 32, welcomed her son Alpha-Jax, now two, with footballer hubby Jacob Blyth, but says the early days of motherhood left her in tears every evening. She confessed: 'I wish somebody had warned me about the baby blues, because oh my God, that hormone drop once I got home from hospital — I was crying for no reason. 'It would get to 6pm, 7pm and I'd just burst into tears. I was scared of going to bed, I didn't want to be alone.' The reality TV favourite added: 'It was very strange, but thankfully that passed after a week or so. But nobody warned me. I wish someone had spoken to me about that. It wasn't fun.' And it wasn't just the hormones keeping Holly up at night — she was plagued with anxiety over Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS), and found herself obsessively checking on Alpha-Jax. Geordie Shore star Holly Hagan cruelly mum shamed as she shares toddler's 'I worried about febrile seizures and all these things you don't really hear about until you have social media,' she admitted. 'It's great for advice but it also shows you loads of terrifying stuff. 'I thought SIDS was really common. I was absolutely terrified thinking one day he might just stop breathing. I even used an Owlet sock that tracked his breathing, oxygen and heart rate because I'm such an anxious person.' Holly also opened up about the challenges of parenting a 'high-temperament' child and said it's taken her two whole years to feel like she's finally cracked motherhood. 'I've made no secret that it's been a difficult journey with him since he was about four months old,' she said. 'I'm finally getting into the swing of it, but it's taken a long time. Motherhood completely turns your life upside down.' 6 Holly found fame on MTV's Geordie Shore Credit: Getty

Teen 'desperate to be famous' dies after dangerous viral 'dusting' challenge

Renna O'Rourke, 19, suffered a cardiac arrest after she took part in the dusting challenge with doctors being unable to save her and donating her organs following her death A teenager said to have dreamed of being famous has tragically died after doing the deadly social media "dusting" challenge. Renna O'Rourke, 19, from Arizona, US, sadly died on Sunday last week following a seven-day stint in a hospital's intensive care unit after she took part in the challenge that has spread online. Dusting, also known as huffing or chroming, involves kids inhaling aerosols, including items such as keyboard cleaners. Renna went into a cardiac arrest following the challenge and was declared braindead. Her father, Aaron, said Renna had always wanted to be famous and dreamed of being a star. ‌ ‌ Speaking to the AZFamily outlet, he said: "She always said, 'I'm gonna be famous, Dad. Just you watch. I'm gonna be famous', and unfortunately this is not under the most optimal of circumstances." Aaron and wife Dana shared what happened to their daughter in a bid to warn others. Dana said: "There's no ID required. It's odourless. It's everything kids look for. They can afford it, they can get it, and it doesn't show in mom and dad's drug test." Renna and her boyfriend used an app delivery service to get the cleaner sent to their home. Speaking to 12News, Dana said: "[Renna] and her boyfriend had Door Dashed product to my house and I didn't know. It's keyboard cleaner. I didn't know what they were doing with it. "We want to make sure that we use our tragedy so that no other parent has to experience looking at their child on life support and a ventilator and not breathing on her own all because she huffed out of a can." Dr Randy Weisman of HonorHealth Scottsdale Osborn Medical Center told AZFamily: "This is extremely concerning. When they inhale these chemicals in the gas it will actually replace the oxygen within their lungs and within the rest of their body." ‌ Weisman said the challenge makes a person feel drunk or euphoric. He added that liver failure, heart failure and disease of the lungs were all possible. Following Renna's death, her organs went on to save at least six people's lives. Dana continued: "Through that we're finding strength and purpose. She will be unbelievably missed, leaving the most aching hole in our lives, but if her life is to mean anything, we are going to do what we can to prevent somebody else's child from being where ours is right now. "She will be unbelievably missed, leaving the most aching hole in our lives, but if her life is to mean anything, we are going to do what we can to prevent somebody else's child from being where ours is right now." The family have created a GoFundMe page to cover medical and funeral costs. Since being launched, the fundraiser has amassed $10,456 (£7,727) in donations, far beyond its $5,000 (£3,691) target.
