The Miami Westminster Christian School softball team went 3-0-1 at the Orange Bowl Fastpitch Invitational at Palmetto Bay Park.
The Warriors (5-3-1) defeated South Plantation, Pompano Beach and Miami Palmetto. They tied Pembroke Pines Somerset Academy.

State soccer honors
Plantation American Heritage senior midfielder Courtney Caruso is the Florida Dairy Farmers State Class 4A Girls' Soccer Player of the Year.
Caruso scored 7 goals and added 26 assists in helping the Patriots to a 19-1 record and the Class 4A state title. She signed to play soccer in college for NCAA Division III New York University.
Cindy Marcial also of Plantation American Heritage is the Class 4A Girls' Soccer Coach of the Year. Marcial led the Patriots to a 19-1 record and their third consecutive state championship (5A titles in 2023-24). It marked the seventh state title for Marcial (2014-16, 2019, 2023-25) at American Heritage.
They are finalists for overall Miss Soccer and State Girls' Soccer Coach of the Year honors, respectively.
A statewide panel of prep media members and girls' soccer coaches vote for those awards.
State basketball honors
The eight individual class finalists for the 2025 Florida Dairy Farmers State Miss Basketball and Girls' Basketball Coach of the Year were announced following balloting by a statewide panel of high school girls' basketball coaches and prep media members.
Every finalist was the leading vote-getter in their classification, making each the Player of the Year or Coach of the Year in their class. The two overall winners will be announced following a final round of balloting by coaches and media.
Markeli Jones-Tynes, a Fort Lauderdale Westminster Academy senior guard, is the state's Class 2A Girls' Basketball Player of the Year. She led the Lions to a 22-8 record and a spot in the regional final by averaging 16.8 points, 9.8 rebounds, 4.9 assists and 3.5 steals per game.
Ochiel Swaby of Miami Country Day is the state's Class 2A Girls' Basketball Coach of the Year. He led the Spartans to a 20-11 record and a third consecutive state title, after winning the Class 3A championship in 2023 and 2024. In 21 years at MCD, Swaby has compiled a 466-141 record with 10 state championships.

St. Thomas Aquinas' Crowley and Stein are the Broward Lacrosse Coaches of the Year
At St. Thomas Aquinas this year, a familiar face led the boys' lacrosse team to yet another state championship and a new face helped the girls' lacrosse team stay among the top teams in Broward County. Now, Terry Crowley and Kristina Stein the Miami Herald's Broward County Lacrosse Coaches of the Year. Crowley is the Herald's Boys' Coach of the Year for the fifth straight season after hoisting his fourth state championship trophy with the Raiders. Crowley also led St. Thomas Aquinas to state titles in 2016, 2017 and 2022, and he also took the Raiders to the title game in 2015, 2019 and 2023. In 2024, St. Thomas Aquinas went into the region playoffs with a losing record before making a run to the final four and that experience primed the Raiders for a return to championship form in 2025. St. Thomas Aquinas brought another trophy back to Fort Lauderdale by blowing out Ponte Vedra, 13-4, in the Class 2A title game May 10. Along the way, the Raiders lost only one game to another Florida team—an overtime loss to Benjamin in April. Stein is the Herald's Broward County Girls' Lacrosse Coach of the Year after sustaining the Raiders' status as one of the top teams in the county in her first year as coach. St. Thomas Aquinas reached the Region 4-2A championship, making a deeper run in the postseason than any other Broward team, and went undefeated against county rivals. In the region playoffs, the Raiders won their first three games each by at least nine goals, only to narrowly fall 7-6 to Vero Beach in the 4-2A championship May 2. Stein, who spent the last two seasons as the coach at Stoneman Douglas, was previously an assistant at St. Thomas Aquinas and is off to a good start in building on the Raiders' legacy of recent success that includes a state title in 2021 and a trip to the state championship in 2023.

Texas Tech tops UCLA 3-1 behind Canady's pitching to reach Women's College World Series semifinals
OKLAHOMA CITY -- NiJaree Canady gave up just four hits and struck out seven, and Texas Tech defeated UCLA 3-1 on Saturday to reach the Women's College World Series semifinals for the first time. The Red Raiders (52-12) need one win against Oregon or Oklahoma on Monday to reach the best-of-three championship series. UCLA (55-12) is still alive in the double-elimination format. The Bruins will play Tennessee in an elimination game on Sunday. Saturday's contest matched programs with very different histories. UCLA has a record 12 World Series championships while Texas Tech just won its first World Series game on Thursday in its first ever trip. 'It feels amazing, just this being our first time here as a team and just being able to get to the semifinals," Canady said. "I feel like, it's a huge accomplishment by itself, but obviously we're not finished. We're going for the whole thing like every other team here. But it's definitely something to be proud of.' Canady has plenty of World Series experience. She led Stanford to the semifinals the past two years and eliminated UCLA from the World Series last year before transferring to Tech. Canady ran into trouble against UCLA a few times on Saturday before coming through, like she did so many times before in a Cardinal uniform. 'I guess you've got to start everything with NiJa in the circle," Tech coach Gerry Glasco said. "She's just so fantastic, and I thought she pitched a gem of a game.' UCLA loaded the bases with one out in the second, yet Canady, the National Fastpitch Coaches Association's Pitcher of the Year, escaped without allowing a run. Texas Tech's Makayla Garcia stole home in the fifth to open the scoring. She slid between UCLA catcher Alexis Ramirez's legs to score the run. 'Coach Glasco told me, 'Hey, we're gonna go and we're going to take a chance,'' Garcia said. "And I had to trust him in that moment, and I trust him -- he's a great coach. And so I was like, 'You know what? We're gonna do it.' And it had to work in our favor. And luckily it did.' UCLA's Kaniya Bragg answered with a solo homer in the bottom of the inning. Hailey Toney's solo blast in the sixth put Tech ahead 2-1 and Raegan Jennings' RBI single in the seventh made it 3-1. UCLA got two on with no outs in the seventh, and Canady again avoided damage. 'We just found a way to win," Glasco said. "And that's kind of what we've become. We pride ourselves on being a mentally tough team, a resilient team that can go out under pressure and play defense when we have to play defense in tight moments.' Taylor Tinsley took the loss. She went the distance and gave up three runs on four hits. Tinsley said the Bruins are ready to move on. 'I feel like the big thing with this team is we have a really short-term memory,' she said. 'Each play is kind of like in the past. This game is already as old as dirt for us, so we're just ready to get back out there.'
