Jharkhand: 4 dead, 4 injured after portion of coal mine collapses in Ramgarh
The incident happened at the Karma project in Mahua Tangri in Kuju Outpost area.
"Four bodies have been recovered from the accident site, while four injured were rescued," Sub-Divisional Officer (SDO) of Ramgarh Anurag Kumar Tiwari told PTI.
The deceased were identified as Md Imtiyaz, Rameshwar Manjhi, Wakil Karmali and Nirmal Munda. All of them hailed from nearby villages.
The relief and rescue operation has been called off after the debris was removed, a police officer said.
"There is no possibility of any person being trapped inside as the debris has been removed," Ramgarh's SDPO Parmeshwar Prasad said.
SP Ajay Kumar said the abandoned mine belonged to Central Coalfields Ltd.
"The company has its own security personnel to stop such illegal activities. We extended our cooperation to CCL after we received the information," he said.
A section of villagers demonstrated near the CCL Karma Project office to protest the incident and demand compensation.
Accusing CCL of negligence, the protestors demanded compensation of ₹ 20 lakh each for the kin of the deceased and ₹ 5 lakh for the injured.
"The company left the mine open. Poor villagers went to extract coal for cooking fuel, and the incident happened. If there was barricading and adequate security in the mine, this accident could have been avoided," Md Kalam, a villager, said.
A meeting of the villagers and CCL management also took place on the compensation. The outcome of it is yet to be known.
Kuju police outpost in-charge Ashutosh Kumar Singh said that some villagers were involved in "illegal" mining of coal at the site when the incident happened.
The district administration issued a show-cause notice to the CCL management over the incident, officials said.
Union Minister Annapurna Devi termed the incident unfortunate and said that the state government should be sensible and immediately take steps to check the recurrence of such incidents.
"It appears that the state government is ignorant and it has nothing to do with such incidents. I would urge the state government to take action over such incident," she said.
Leader of the Opposition Babulal Marandi of the BJP demanded a high-level probe into the incident.
"I am deeply saddened by this news. Many of our labourer brothers are feared to be buried in illegal coal mines. I pray to god for their safety and express my deepest condolences to the bereaved families," he said in a post on X.
He also claimed that this was not an accident, but murder.
"This is due to the negligence of the corrupt and incompetent government, which turns a blind eye to the illegal business going on in broad daylight," he alleged.
Marandi questioned that if the CCL had closed the mine, how the coal mafia was operating there.

A 15-year-old boy was allegedly stabbed to death by his teenage cousin in East Delhi on Saturday, said police, adding that the accused was arrested hours later. Enraged, the accused allegedly picked up a piece of glass from the ground and stabbed the boy near his left underarm, said officers. As per the Delhi Police data, 107 cases of murder were reported between January 1 and March 31 in 2025, a slight uptick from 105 in 2024 during the same period, but lower than 2023, when this figure was 115. Attempt to murder cases, however, went down by 17.24 per cent to 168 as compared to 203 in 2024.

Social media posts: judicial magistrates cautioned against deviating from law while ordering remand
The Registrar (Judicial) of the High Court (HC) of Andhra Pradesh issued a circular on July 5, instructing the judicial magistrates in the State to satisfy themselves before ordering remand, particularly in cases relating to social media postings / comments, that the investigating officers complied with the law laid down in the Arnesh Kumar vs State of Bihar and Imran Pratapgarhi vs State of Gujarat judgments. It was mentioned in the given judgements that the magistrates should satisfy themselves that the accused committed repeated and multiple offences, and, if not ordered to be remanded to judicial custody, the accused might influence the witnesses or tamper evidence that the police require for custodial investigation. The Registrar observed that it had been brought to the notice of the HC that the judicial magistrates were remanding the accused in cases pertaining to social media postings / comments without adhering to the principles laid down in the above judgments. While quashing the FIR in the Imran Pratapgarhi vs State of Gujarat case, the Supreme Court held that, before registering an FIR involving speech, writing, or artistic expression (where the offences carry three to seven years of imprisonment), the police must conduct a preliminary inquiry under Section 173 (3) of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, and such inquiry shall be preceded by an approval from the Deputy Superintendent of Police and the same must be concluded within 14 days. The judicial magistrates have to follow the circular scrupulously, and any deviation thereof would be viewed very seriously, and they would be rendering themselves liable for contempt of the HC, besides facing departmental inquiry.

Madhya Pradesh cop earned Rs 28 lakh in 12 years without doing duty. Here's how
In a staggering case of departmental negligence and systemic failure, a police constable from Madhya Pradesh's Vidisha district managed to draw a salary of Rs 28 lakh for 12 years without ever actively serving in the constable was recruited into the Madhya Pradesh Police in 2011 and initially posted to Bhopal Police Lines. Shortly after joining, he was sent for basic police training at the Sagar Police Training Centre, as was standard for his batch. But instead of reporting there, he quietly returned home to Vidisha, said Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Ankita than alerting his superiors or seeking leave, the constable sent his service record back to Bhopal Police Lines via speed post. The documents were received and accepted without any verification of his physical presence or training status, the ACP said. No one at the training centre flagged his absence and no one at Bhopal Police Lines questioned it months passed and then years, the constable never reported for duty. Yet, his name remained active on the rolls and his monthly salary was credited without fail. Over time, he quietly amassed more than Rs 28 lakh without stepping into a police station or training was only in 2023, when the department began pay grade evaluation for the 2011 batch, that the anomaly came to light. Officials couldn't locate the constable and no one in the department recognised his name or face. During the internal inquiry, officials attempted to trace the constable's past records and service returns, but found seemed implausible that someone could have been on duty for 12 years and not been assigned a single case or involved in any official the constable was finally summoned for questioning, he claimed he had been suffering from mental health issues, said ACP Khaterkar. He submitted documents to support his claim, stating that his condition had prevented him from attending duty all these senior officers were alerted to the case, the matter was handed over to ACP Khaterkar, who is posted in Bhopal's TT Nagar area for an investigation."The constable in question joined the police force in 2011. Although, he was supposed to be sent for training along with the rest of his batch, he cited personal reasons and was allowed to go separately. While, the others completed their training and returned, the constable never reported. Since he went alone, there was no return record maintained for him," ACP Khaterkar told India Today TV."Despite never completing his training or joining active duty, his name continued to be reflected in police records as a newly-appointed constable. He remained on the rolls and his salary was credited regularly every year. The issue came to light when, 12 years later, his records were reviewed as part of a time-bound pay grade evaluation," she his defence, the constable argued he was unaware of the updated police rules at that time and claimed that lack of communication and his health issues kept him from far, the constable has returned Rs 1.5 lakh to the department and agreed to repay the remaining amount through deductions from his future salary. He is currently posted at the Bhopal Police Lines and remains under watch, the ACP said that the inquiry was still ongoing and more testimonies will be recorded.
