Coastal warning issued after magnitude 6.7 quake hits off New Zealand

Al Jazeera25-03-2025

People living in coastal areas have been warned to get out of the water and move away from beaches after a strong 6.7 magnitude earthquake struck off New Zealand's South Island, authorities said.
Residents of the Southland and Fiordland regions should stay away from marine areas as strong and unusual currents may present a danger, the National Emergency Management Agency said after the earthquake on Tuesday.
'People on boats, live-aboards and at marinas should leave their boats/vessels and move onto shore. Do not return to boats unless instructed by officials,' the agency said.
More than 4,700 people felt the quake, government seismic monitor Geonet said, as New Zealand media reported items falling and buildings swaying.
The quake was reported at a depth of 33km (21 miles) about 160km (99 miles) northwest of Snares Islands, the northernmost of New Zealand's sub-Antarctic islands, Geonet said in an alert.

The United States Geological Survey said the quake, which was downgraded from an earlier magnitude of 7, happened at a depth of about 10 km (6 miles).
Australia's national weather bureau said there was no tsunami threat to the mainland, islands or territories.
New Zealand lies on the seismically active 'Ring of Fire', a 40,000km (24,854-mile) arc of volcanoes and ocean trenches girdling much of the Pacific Ocean.

Magnitude 7.4 earthquake strikes off coasts of Chile, Argentina

A magnitude 7.4 earthquake has struck off the southern coasts of Chile and Argentina, the United States Geological Survey (USGS) says. Chilean authorities issued an evacuation alert on Friday for the entire coastal section of the Strait of Magellan, in the far south of the South American country. Citing the threat of a tsunami, the Chilean National Service for Disaster Prevention and Response also ordered the evacuation of the beach area of the Antarctic Territory, Magallanes Region. Argentina did not immediately issue a similar tsunami warning. No damage or casualties have been initially reported. The earthquake struck Drake Passage between Cape Horn and Antarctica at a depth of just 10km (6 miles), the USGS said. More to come …

At least 126 killed after strong earthquake hits China's Tibet

A powerful earthquake has struck a remote region of Tibet, killing at least 126 people and wounding more than 100 others, with tremors felt in Nepal, Bhutan and parts of northern India. The United States Geological Survey said the earthquake on Tuesday measured 7.1 on the Richter scale, while the China Earthquake Networks Center (CENC) recorded a magnitude of 6.8. The epicentre of the quake was the Shigatse high-altitude county of Dingri, located on the Chinese side of Mount Everest and home to about 62,000 people. Shigatse is the seat of the Panchen Lama, a significant figure in Tibetan Buddhism, whose spiritual authority is second only to the Dalai Lama. The Xinhua state news agency reported that more than 1,000 houses have been damaged to varying degrees by the quake that shook the region at a depth of about 10km (6 miles) at 9:05am (01:05 GMT). 'Dingri county and its surrounding areas experienced very strong tremors, and many buildings near the epicentre have collapsed,' reported state broadcaster CCTV. 'A total of 126 people have been confirmed dead and 188 others injured as of 7:00pm (11:00 GMT) Tuesday,' Xinhua reported. Dingri is currently experiencing temperatures of about minus 8 degrees Celsius (17.6 degrees Fahrenheit). The China Meteorological Administration forecast that the mercury will drop to minus 18 degrees Celsius (minus 0.4 degrees Fahrenheit) by Tuesday evening. The remote Shigatse is far from China's main cities. This, combined with the extreme cold, has hindered rescue efforts, according to Al Jazeera's Katrina Yu, reporting from Beijing.
