Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella shocks industry by admitting AI has yet to deliver real value despite massive investment
Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella says
AI
is not creating real value yet, even after lots of money spent. Microsoft invested billions in OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT. Nadella was on Dwarkesh Patel's podcast and gave a reality check about AI, as per reports.
He said claims about reaching artificial general intelligence are nonsense and just "benchmark hacking." Nadella thinks people should focus on whether AI brings real-world value, not just chase big ideas like AGI, as per the reports Futurism.
When will AI help the economy?
He said the real proof will be if AI helps the economy grow faster, like during the Industrial Revolution. According to him, the world economy should grow 10% or productivity should jump if AI is really working. So far, we haven't seen this kind of growth or value from AI, as per reports.

OpenAI's top AI still works slowly and needs lots of human help. Nadella's view is practical and down-to-earth, pushing back on too much hype about AGI. He admits generative AI has not generated much value yet. The economy doesn't show signs of speeding up because of AI now, according to the report by futurism.
Big money but big questions
Whether AI will create big value 'when' or 'if' is still debated. Lots of money is being spent by companies like Microsoft and OpenAI on AI technology. A Chinese startup, DeepSeek, showed a cheaper AI that can compete with others but caused a $1 trillion market drop after investors panicked, as per reports.
Live Events
Current AI tools have problems like hallucinations and cybersecurity risks. Nadella's podcast talk might be Microsoft's way to lower unrealistic expectations for AI. But Microsoft is still investing big, $12 billion in OpenAI and joining Trump's $500 billion Stargate project with OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, according to the report by Futurism.
Elon Musk questioned if Altman had enough money for Stargate, but Nadella defended it strongly. Nadella told CNBC he's committed to his $80 billion investment despite Musk's doubts.

European truckmakers stockpile to deal with Chinese rare-earths crunch
Gothenburg (Sweden): European truckmaker Volvo Group has been seeking alternative sources of rare earths and Daimler Trucks has been building inventories to deal with supply issues linked to Chinese export curbs, saying lessons had been learned from the chip crisis. The automotive industry currently fears that the supply of rare earths, which are needed for magnets, will be hurt by recent export regulations in China. Since April, exporters have had to apply for new licences, which are only slowly being approved. China dominates the market for the raw materials, which are used in various components from electric motors to window mechanisms in cars and trucks. "With everything that's going on in the world right now, this seems to be a good and necessary strategy," Radstrom said. Live Events She said the situation is currently a major focus for Daimler, which it is closely monitoring. "So far, we seem to be getting what we need," she added, saying there have been no production outages so far. Volvo Group's CTO Lars Stenqvist also noted "a little bit of turmoil" around rare-earth supply, and said in the long term, there had been "a clear move" to be less dependent on the minerals. Stenqvist, who also said the group's output had not been affected, emphasised like Radstrom that there had been many lessons learned from the chip crisis. "We learnt during the semiconductor crisis a few years ago that we maybe have had a history of working too much with the tier 1 suppliers," he said. "We are never hesitating to go down in the value chain, down to tier 2, 3, 4, 5 if necessary." "During that (chip) crisis we learned how to navigate down to the mines, and that is what we also need to do when it comes to rare earth metals and minerals," Stenqvist added.

OpenAI brings image generation feature for all through ChatGPT on WhatsApp
OpenAI will make the image generation feature available for WhatsApp users as well, said the company. 'This is the same image generation tool available in the ChatGPT web and mobile apps, now integrated into WhatsApp. Image generation in WhatsApp is free to use and is now available everywhere ChatGPT in WhatsApp is supported,' the company said in a statement. The integration of ChatGPT on WhatsApp was announced by OpenAI in December 2024, where users could send a message to ChatGPT to get up-to-date answers. Earlier this year, in April, ChatGPT said it would start allowing users to search, compare, and buy products in ChatGPT by giving users personalised recommendations for products, visual details of the product they are looking for, the price, as well as a direct link to buy it. Before that, in February 2024, OpenAI said it was 'testing the ability for ChatGPT to remember things you discuss to make future chats more helpful.' The idea, OpenAI had then said, was to save users 'from having to repeat information' so that future conversations with the chatbot become more useful. The memory feature was rolled out to all users in September that year. In an update on April 10 this year, OpenAI said that memory in ChatGPT is now comprehensive, as the large language model (LLM) could — in addition to memories saved by users — also reference past conversations between the chatbot and the user to deliver more personalised responses.

Microsoft confirms next-gen Xbox console with AMD partnership, multi-store support
Microsoft announced today that its next-generation Xbox console will feature AMD silicon and won't be restricted to a single game store, marking a significant shift in the company's gaming strategy. Xbox President Sarah Bond confirmed the development in a YouTube video, promising "an Xbox experience not locked to a single store or tied to one device." The tech giant has established a strategic multi-year partnership with AMD to co-engineer silicon across multiple gaming devices, including next-generation Xbox consoles for both living rooms and handheld gaming. This collaboration aims to deliver advanced graphics innovation and AI-enhanced gameplay while maintaining full compatibility with existing Xbox game libraries. Xbox breaks free from console-only gaming model Bond emphasized that Microsoft's vision centers on creating a gaming platform that follows players across all devices. The announcement comes days after Microsoft revealed its partnership with Asus to launch Xbox Ally handheld devices featuring a new full-screen Xbox experience running on Windows. This Windows-based approach allows access to multiple game stores, including Steam , signaling Microsoft's commitment to platform openness. Xbox + AMD: Powering the Next Generation of Xbox "This is all about building a gaming platform that's always with you, so you can play the games you want across devices anywhere you want," Bond stated. The company is working closely with its Windows team to position Windows as the premier gaming platform, supporting multiple storefronts and device types. Next-gen Xbox to preserve entire game library Microsoft has confirmed that next-generation Xbox consoles will maintain full backward compatibility with existing Xbox game libraries, addressing concerns raised after the Xbox Ally announcement. Unlike the Windows-based Xbox Ally devices, which can only run Xbox games with PC counterparts, the next-gen consoles will support the entire Xbox catalog. The partnership with AMD will focus on advancing gaming silicon technology to unlock deeper visual quality and immersive experiences enhanced by artificial intelligence. Microsoft's hardware investment spans consoles, handhelds, PC gaming, cloud services, and accessories, representing a comprehensive approach to next-generation gaming across multiple form factors and distribution channels. 7 Things You May Have Missed in the GTA 6 Second Trailer AI Masterclass for Students.
