Early Life and Education
Neera Arya was born on March 5, 1902, in Khekra Nagar, Baghpat district, into a prominent family. Her father, Seth Chhajjumal, a well-known businessman, ensured that Neera and her brother Basant received their education in Kolkata. Her father married her to Srikant Jai Ranjan Das, a British Army officer and CID Inspector. They had different beliefs, which caused problems. When Srikant found out Neera was part of Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose's army, he tried to get information from her. Neera refused to tell him. One day, Srikant followed Neera while she was meeting Bose and fired a gun, hitting Bose's driver. She quickly acted and killed Srikant to protect Bose. Because of this, the British sent her to prison in the Cellular Jail in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. But she never stopped loving and fighting for her country.
Imprisonment and Torture
During her imprisonment, Neera was offered bail if she revealed information about the Indian National Congress leaders, especially Subhash Chandra Bose. However, she refused and even spat at a prison guard. Historical accounts state that, as punishment for her silence, her breasts were cut off. Despite this brutal torture, Neera remained steadfastly loyal to the nation and was honored by Bose himself as the first woman spy of the Azad Hind Fauj.
The Upcoming Biopic
Roopa Iyer is set to debut in Bollywood both as an actress and director with this biographical film. The screenplay is penned by Varun Gautham, a National Award-winning writer.

800-year-old Shiva temple of later Pandya period unearthed near Melur
An 800-year-old Shiva temple of the later Pandya period has been unearthed at Udampatti, a village in Melur taluk. Professor P. Devi Arivu Selvam, temple architect and sculpture researcher, says that though only the foundation of the temple remains, the inscriptions on the culvert are significant as they reveal how the temple had been financially independent. While documents published by the Tamil Nadu State Department of Archaeology in 1974-75 had described the existence of ancient temples in this belt, most of them are in ruins and some have almost disappeared. So, it came as a surprise to historians when recently boys playing in an open ground at Udampatti in the Malampatti panchayat stumbled upon a broken stone structure covered in mud. The villagers alerted the Village Adminsitrative Officer (VAO) and Ms. Devi. With the VAO's permission, the area was cleared. What emerged was the foundation of a temple with the stone base on the northern and southern sides intact. With the help of the engravings on the foundation stone and Silpa Sastram as reference, the temple was found to have been dedicated to Lord Shiva. C. Santhalingam, archaeologist and secretary of the Pandya Nadu Centre for Historical Research, who deciphered the two Tamil inscriptions found on the stone base, says they can be dated to 1217-1218 CE, during the reign of Maravarman Sundara Pandya. The inscriptions say the name of the village was Attur and the temple was called Thennavanisvaram. 'It is pertinent to note that Thennavan is actually a title used by the Pandyas,' says Ms. Devi. The inscriptions are a sale deed of a waterbody by one Alagaperumal, chieftain of Kalavalinadu, to one Nambi Perambala Kuthan alias Kangeyan. The waterbody, called Nagankudi, along with wet and dry land, was sold for 64 kasu (coins). The four boundaries of the land and the waterbody that had been sold have been defined in the inscriptions. It has also been mentioned that the tax due to the land should be given to the God of Thennavaniswaram of Attur for its day-to-day expenses. For historians, these inscriptions reveal the ancient name of Udampatti, which was then called Attur, and also the socio-economic dynamics that were at play during the later Pandya period.

18,000 kg of waste collected from beaches during fortnight-long drive in Guajrat
Gandhinagar: More than 18,350kg of waste, including a large quantity of plastic, was collected from the beaches of the state in a fortnight-long drive from May 22 to June 5, the state govt informed on Friday. The drive to clean beaches was undertaken by the Gujarat Environment Management Institute (GEMI) with participation from citizens. An official statement said that cleaning activities were conducted at coastal sites of Dwarka, Shivrajpur, Umargam, Dandi, Dumas, Mahuva, Porbandar, and Ravalpir. The initiative was supported by the Gujarat Pollution Control Board, local municipalities, forest officials, NGOs, and industries. A number of awareness programmes were also held for the responsible disposal of waste, the statement said. With a 1,600-km coastline, Gujarat has several popular beaches like Shivrajpur (a Blue Flag-certified beach), Dwarka, Dumas, Tithal, Mandvi, Ghoghla, Somnath, Dandi, Porbandar, and Umargam. Some of these beaches also hold historical and ecological significance. This waste endangers marine life such as turtles, crabs, and coastal birds, apart from affecting the livelihood of fishermen. The statement said that apart from the cleaning of beaches, awareness was created through 37 street plays performed in urban and rural areas of 15 districts like Aravalli, Rajkot, Bharuch, Kutch, Dahod, Junagadh, and Dang. These performances reached over 4,100 people, educating them about plastic hazards and promoting eco-friendly practices. Ten residential societies of Gandhinagar and Ahmedabad also joined in the waste collection drive, with about 450 residents collecting more than 250kg of recyclable plastic, the statement said. MLA urges NGO to extend support in upgrading govt. schools
Chamarajanagar MLA C. Puttarangashetty on Friday said that NGOs should extend cooperation and support in revival and upgradation of government schools. Speaking at the inauguration of a newly constructed school building of the upgraded Government Higher Primary School in PWD Colony, he said that government has taken the initiative to upgrade schools, and this should be supported by NGOs. The school has been adopted and supported by Basava Rajendra Medical Trust. Ramachandraraje Urs, Deputy Director of the Department of Public Instruction, said many initiatives such as Nanna Shaale, Nanna Koduge (My School, My Contribution), have been launched, and alumni continue to contribute to improve amenities at schools. The official said the enrollment in the school was 62 in 2021–22, which rose to 119 in 2022–23 and 210 in 2023–24. In the current academic year 2025–26, 320 children have been enrolled, he said. The school, which earlier had classes from 1 to 8, will now be extended from LKG to 9th standard. It will have class 10 in the next academic year, said Mr. Urs. The Basava Rajendra Medical Trust has provided eight classrooms, a school vehicle, a borewell, furniture, books, uniforms, and computers to the school. The school will be developed in to a model school, he said. M. Basavarajendra, managing director of the trust, said that donation alone will not suffice in upgradation of schools, and the need of the hour was its proper utilisation. He said it is important to learn English, along with Kannada. 'In today's world, learning other languages, along with the mother tongue, is necessary for professional life. Hence, facilities should be provided to teach English in government schools,' said Mr. Basavarajendra. Members of the School Development Management Committee were present.
