Yellow Brick goes agonisingly close to fairytale upset in Stradbroke Handicap

Queensland hero Yellow Brick almost pulled one of the great fairytale upsets in recent Stradbroke Handicap history but the $41 roughie was narrowly outgunned by favourite War Machine in the $3m race at Eagle Farm on Saturday.
It was a bittersweet moment for father-and-daughter trainers Tony and Maddy Sears, who were proud of Yellow Brick's incredible effort but the moment was tinged with some sadness given they came so close to jagging the $1.8m winner's cheque.
But they will settle for $540,000 in prizemoney as the runner-up in Queensland's premier race run on a good track on a sunny day in Brisbane.

The Straddie is 1400m but if it was run over 1500m on Saturday, the Sears would be popping the champagne corks because Yellow Brick, with Andrew Mallyon on board, was starting to wear down War Machine ($2.65) approaching the winning post.
Tony Sears said he was incredibly proud of Maddy, who had been training Yellow Brick at the pair's Gold Coast stables before he joined his daughter on the Glitter Strip just two weeks ago.

'I'm more proud of Maddysen than the horse,' he said.
'She's done a great job getting him ready.
'I've only been down the Gold Coast for two weeks. She's defied all the odds. People think he wasn't going very well but we knew he was going well.
'I backed him. We honestly thought he could win. He's just got to be ridden quiet like that.
'It was unbelievable, she's done a great job with him.'
Maddy Sears said after the race she was 'speechless'.
'He was tremendous,' she said about Yellow Brick, who last won in a $160,000 Listed race over 1400m at Eagle Farm in October.
'That was the favourite (War Machine) in the race and he gave him a fair headstart at the top of the straight.
'He was the widest runner and he had to do things the hard way but I couldn't be any prouder.'
This week Maddy Sears compared five-year-old gelding Yellow Brick to a Labrador Retriever because he 'loves to be the centre of attention'.
And although the spoils of victory went to War Machine and Lindsay Park, Yellow Brick sure grabbed his share of attention.

Meanwhile, champion jockey Craig Williams said another Queensland hero, old warrior Rothfire, was 'gallant' in finishing seventh for trainer Rob Heathcote, who would have preferred a softer track.
The seven-year-old Rothfire had battled a hoof injury for the past 10 days after suffering an untimely stone bruise and was lucky to even make the prestigious race.
'From the outside barrier draw he gave me a beautiful ride from there,' Williams said about the 2020 JJ Atkins champion.
'I got on the back of the eventual winner. He travelled so well but the winner was too good for us late.
'He just got a bit tired today and as Rob Heathcote said, he didn't have the ideal preparation.'

Codetta was trapped three-wide without cover for most of the race but still had the temerity to loom up halfway down the straight as a winning threat. She's racing well and her turn is coming. SACRED ROCKS (race 10) made a real statement at her Sydney debut. She had won two of her four starts in Victoria, finishing second in the other two, before trainer Ciaron Maher switched states. Sacred Rocks settled back in the field from a wide barrier, didn't have the smoothest of passages but her finishing acceleration was very impressive. She's talented and can keep winning. QUEEN OF CLUBS (race 1) is a promising filly and she defeated a smart field of two-year-olds in the opener. She's a well-bred daughter of Maurice and will certainly get out over further. She's likely to have a short break now but watch out for her in the fillies classics in spring. TASORAAY (race 4) set a solid tempo in front and this might have left him vulnerable late. He still fought back hard when challenged and his close second to Don't Forget Jack was full of merit. Tasoraay was only second-up from a spell and can win again this winter. ASSAILANT (race 9) has shaped promisingly in his two Australian starts including his third to Freight Train. The former English galloper got to 2000m quickly, led for a long way and stuck to his task under pressure. Assailant can only continue to improve and is ready to win. ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ CRUNCH TIME WINNING PROPOSAL (race 5) ran the fastest final 600m sectional of the day when she recorded a 33.35s split to dive through under Overfull and score a deserved win. Winning Proposal also produced a brilliant 200m closing split of 11.12s. SACRED ROCKS (race 10) finished fast to win the closer, running her final 600m in 33.66s with a 11.08s closing sectional. MOTOSCAFO (race 3) might have only won a Midway but his effort should not be underestimated. He charged home his final 600m in 33.57s and ran the fastest 200m closing split of the day in 10.97s. QUEEN OF CLUBS (race 1) powered home her final 600m in 34.43s and a closing 200m split of 11.61s to score her first win in four starts. DON'T FORGET JACK (race 4) attacked the line strongly with a 34.08s final 600m to score well. He was able to run his 200m closing split of 11.53s. ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ WHAT THEY SAID 'Can you book me for the horse in this race next year!' — Jockey Adam Hyeronimus after combining with Sir Lucan to win a second successive Winter Cup. Gibbons was suspended from June 22 to June 29 after he was found guilty by stewards of causing interference on runner-up HALF YOURS (race 9). Hyeronimus was suspended for the same period after his winning ride on SIR LUCAN (race 8). HELL OF A FOX (race 2) drew the outside barrier and was shifted behind runners in the early stages. Near the 900m she was hampered and carried wider by RED RAGS TO BULLS, which shifted out when being steadied off heels. Jockey Brodie Loy said that after enduring a wide run, the filly was one paced to the finish line and raced as though it had come to the end of its preparation. CODETTA (race 5) was hampered and taken wider by KING'S SECRET approaching the 600m. On straightening, she was again inconvenienced by King's Secret, which shifted out. Apprentice Jace McMurray told stewards that Codetta was slow to begin and settled further back than intended. He said when then unable to obtain cover Codetta was obliged to race wide throughout the event. KING'S SECRET (race 5) jumped out of the barriers and was bumped by Slinky, which shifted in. King's Secret finished fifth and a post-race veterinary examination revealed the gelding had the thumps. ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ RON DUFFICY'S RANDWICK SNAPSHOT RUN OF THE DAY SACRED ROCKS did a great job having her first Sydney run. She met a pretty slick field and you have to like the way she charged over the top of them late looking a nice mare for the future. FORGET THEY RAN CODETTA and HALF YOURS were both beaten favourites on the day but I wouldn't mark them down on their performances. They both had awkward draws not having much go their way and can make amends moving forward. HORSE TO FOLLOW Outside of those mentioned above I thought the debut performance of SCOOP THE POOL had merit. He's a two-year-old who has a pedigree to just keep improving especially over further than what he contested here. RIDE OF THE DAY Boom apprentice Braith Nock put on a show with a winning treble. ‘Sick joke': Aussie George Kambosos victim of cruel KO loss to Richardson Hitchins

George Kambosos has suffered the most brutal loss of his career with boxing commentators suggesting he was so outclassed that the fight should not have been allowed to go ahead. The former IBF and WBO world champ was taught a devastating lesson by American Richardson Hitchins on Sunday before the referee stopped the fight in the eighth round. Kambosos was knocked to the ground for the first time in the eighth round when Hitchins landed a third savage body shot, but the fight could easily have been stopped in the previous rounds. According to DAZN, Hitchins landed 104 jabs to Kambosos' 32 after seven rounds. Leading boxing commentator Sergio Mora said on the broadcast the fight had been a 'surgical beatdown'. 'Hitchins has no respect for Kambosos now' he said in an earlier round. 'Now he's not even jumping back or trying to counter. He's barely making him miss with that shoulder before coming back with that right hand landing accurately.' He went on to say: 'Hitchins is so relaxed. He has no respect for him'. The referee stopped the fight. Photo: DAZN. The commentary team noted Hitchins at one point yelled at Kambosos' corner to stop the fight. Boxing analyst Chris Mannix scored the fight 70-63 after seven rounds. 'Surgical performances do not get much more dominant than that,' he said. Boxing guru Dan Rafael was even more savage in his analysis, questioning why the fight was allowed to happen. Since his historic triumph over Teofimo Lopez, Kambosos has lost four of his past six fights. Rafael posted on X: 'That the IBF made Kambosos mandatory is a sick joke'. He went on to write: 'Complete and utter destruction in a mismatch. Hitchins easily retains the IBF 140 title in a sensational performance. He wrote earlier: 'Hitchins continues to beat the s*** out of Kambosos. Punishing him, battering him. 'I said it would be a massacre and thru four rounds that is what it is. 4-0 and Hitchins landing at will.' Lopez was ringside for the fight ans offered up some brutal advice to the Australian after the fifth round. 'Move your f***ing head,' he said 'Move you're f***ing head.' Kambosos' career is now at crossroads. He said he did not know what will come next for him. 'I don't know right now. I've had two fights in three months' time, two solid guys. I've been fighting the best,' he said. 'Right now, I'm going to coach my son's footy team. That's what I want to do. We'll go back to the drawing board.' Speaking after the fight, Hitchins said he had watched Kambosos' previous fights with Devin Haney and knew if he was able to take the fight inside he would be able to find success. 'He (Haney) was head-hunting a lot when he was hurt, so I said I'm going to touch him with some short shots and when I did I saw that he squinted,' added Hitchins. 'I smelled blood but I just wanted to keep punishing him. I told his dad, 'If you love your son you should stop the fight'. He was tough. He was a true competitor.
