Nottingham Forest extends manager Nuno Espirito Santo's contract after European qualification
NOTTINGHAM, England (AP) — Nottingham Forest manager Nuno Espirito Santo has been rewarded with a contract extension for leading the club to its first European qualification for almost 30 years.
The 51-year-old Nuno signed a three-year deal to stay at the City Ground until at least 2028, the Premier League club said on its website Saturday.
'Nuno masterminded an incredible 2024-25 season for Forest, guiding the club to its highest league finish in 30 years and thus qualifying for UEFA European competition for the first time since 1995-96,' the club said.
Nuno's team enjoyed away wins over Liverpool and Manchester United, and strung together the club's longest top-flight winning streak since 1967.
Forest was on course for Champions League qualification after beating Tottenham Hotspur 2-1 away in April, but only one more win in the last five games meant it had to settle for seventh place. Only the top five qualified for Europe's premier competition.
Forest had to settle for the third-tier Conference League competition — and will learn its playoff-round opponent when the Aug. 4 draw is made.
Club owner Evangelos Marinakis
remonstrated with Nuno on the field
after a 2-2 draw with Midlands rival Leicester dented its Champions League hopes. The club later said that Marinakis' concern was about the handling of injured player Taiwo Awoniyi.
On Saturday, Marinakis only had words of praise.
'Nuno has made a great impact and performed very well during his time with us so far,' the Greek businessman said. 'He has demonstrated that he maximizes player performance and is an expert at developing players, whilst also embedding our young talent into the first team set-up.'
Nuno, who previously managed Wolves and Tottenham, took over at Forest from the fired Steve Cooper in December 2023 and helped the team avoid relegation on the final day of the season.
'I am delighted to be able to continue our journey at this fantastic football club,' the manager from the island country of São Tomé and Príncipe said of his contract extension. 'Since we arrived at Forest, we have worked extremely hard to create a special bond between the players, the fans and everyone at the club, which helped us achieve great things last season.'

Yankees RHP Luis Gil faces hitters for 1st time since straining his right lat
Associated Press NEW YORK (AP) — Luis Gil faced hitters for the first time since straining his right lat in spring training, throwing about 20 pitches in a session New York Yankees manager Aaron Boone described on Saturday as 'free and easy." About two hours before the Yankees continued their three-game series with Baltimore, Gil notched four strikeouts — three swinging. Since several of the backups who would take part in live sessions were in the lineup, Gil threw to bullpen catcher Peter Serruto and information coordinator Ryan McLaughlin. 'I felt it looked really good,' Boone said. 'I think he was 95, 96. It looked every bit of that, looked like it. Just the metrics on the four-seam were really good and I thought he was in control of himself. So free and easy.' The Yankees are unsure of how many more times Gil will face hitters before progressing to a rehab game. Boone is hopeful the 2024 AL Rookie of the Year can return by the end of July. 'I felt really good out there,' Gil said through a translator. "It's been a long process. You heal little by little. It felt good to get on the mound to face some hitters.' Gil stopped a bullpen session on Feb. 28 because of tightness in his pitching shoulder. He went to New York for a second MRI that revealed a high-grade lat strain on March 3. Gil was shut down from throwing for at least six weeks after receiving the original diagnosis, and at the time the Yankees said he would not return until June at the earliest. On April 16, the Yankees said Gil's throwing program would be delayed for about 10 days. 'It's important. Fortunately, after the setback, it's been a slow build up, but it's gone well,' Boone said. 'It feels like kind of every step of the way. So that's been encouraging and now we start to build. We start to build lives, pitch counts and then eventually getting into rehab games. So definitely another important box to check.' The 26-year-old Gil went 15-7 with a 3.50 ERA in 29 starts for the AL East champions last year, striking out 171 and walking a major league-high 77 in 151 2/3 innings. Acquired from the Minnesota Twins in a 2018 trade, Gil made a successful return from Tommy John surgery and threw eight more innings in a pair of postseason starts as the Yankees reached the World Series for the first time since 2009. ___ AP MLB: recommended in this topic

How will Jeremie Frimpong fit into Arne Slot's Liverpool line-up?
Liverpool haven't taken long to find their supposed replacement for Trent Alexander-Arnold. Jeremie Frimpong, 24, has completed his Anfield switch after three-and-a-half glorious years at Bayer Leverkusen, where under the tutelage of ex-Reds maestro Xabi Alonso, he helped guide the German outfit to a historic unbeaten domestic double in 2023/24. Advertisement He signs for £29.5m after Liverpool activated his release clause - a bargain of a fee, given the fact he has been one of the best on the globe in his position for the past two or so years. Watch every Fifa Club World Cup game free on DAZN. Sign up here now. However, what exactly is his position? And how will he fit in Arne Slot's system? On the surface, Frimpong does not look like the perfect fit for Slot's four-back system. He thrived as a marauding wing-back beside Alonso's back three and was more of a winger than a defender. In fact, his average positioning last season was far more similar to Mohamed Salah than it was to Alexander-Arnold. Jeremie Frimpong's heat map is similar to that of Mohamed Salah (Opta) Liverpool already boast seismic attacking threat down the right through Salah (Opta) While much was made of Alexander-Arnold's defending capabilities during his eight-year run in Liverpool's first team, the 26-year-old did take up a considerably deeper role than previously under Jurgen Klopp this season, with Slot valuing defensive security the constant overlapping option. Advertisement Whereas with Frimpong, one of his main eye-catching qualities is his forward movement. He has lightning pace, and he is not afraid to use it - recording the second most sprints in the German top flight this season. Frimpong's ability to carry the ball forward down the right has proved pivotal to Alonso across the past two seasons and it's led to him racking up a fair number of goal contributions from his position, with 19 goals and 24 assists in all competitions since the beginning of 2023/24. Last term, the Dutchman recorded 109 long progressive carries - which requires a player to move with the ball up the field by at least 10m - while Alexander-Arnold managed just 63 in the Premier League, as per Opta. But what the Englishman has perhaps lacked in pace, he makes up with his passing range, something Frimpong can't exactly match. Frimpong is not known for his expansive passing, instead thriving as a direct runner (Opta) Liverpool will miss Alexander-Arnold's sublime passing range from right-back (Opta) It's clear to see that Frimpong for Alexander-Arnold is not a like-for-like change at right-back. When looking at him, the Dutchman seems more like right-wing reinforcements for Salah. However, Frimpong is not a winger who has been made accustomed to a more defensive position over time, akin to a Juan Cuadrado type. Much of his early career at Celtic and the Manchester City academy saw him utilised as a full-back in a defensive four. Advertisement While his best years at Leverkusen came at wing-back, he spent much of his first two seasons at the BayArena at right-back, in which he averaged 1.6 tackles per 90, 0.6 interceptions and won possession 4.8 times per 90. He is a capable defender, and it's why his arrival is unlikely to spark a systemic change for Slot. However, given his recent regularity of all but playing on the wing for club and country, whether he is thrown straight into Slot's back four is up for debate. We can see him starting the season as second fiddle to Alexander-Arnold's long-time understudy Conor Bradley. Conor Bradley will have his eye on locking down right-back despite Frimpong's arrival (PA Wire) Bradley, 21, has a fight on his hands if he is to become Liverpool's bona fide starter at right-back following Alexander-Arnold's departure. He shouldn't take Frimpong's arrival as a slight on his ability, though - competition and depth in quality is healthy for title-calibre squads. And it's clear he has the faith of the club, having just been handed a four-year contract extension. Advertisement The Northern Irishman, a far more natural, defensively-strong right-back than Frimpong, knows the system and could start the season as the preferred option while Frimpong beds himself in to new surroundings. It's not unprecedented to see future Liverpool mainstays see their minutes limited during the early stages of their Anfield tenure - the likes of Andy Robertson and Fabinho took months to earn their place as a regular starter under Klopp. Whether Slot takes a similar approach to let Frimpong adapt, given the apparent playstyle clash, is yet to be seen. And while the fee obviously isn't everything, Frimpong's price tag hardly represents that of an immediate starter. Just shy of £30m, he surely arrives knowing minutes are not guaranteed. As such, he could end up starting the season as rotational support for both Bradley and Salah, with an eye to locking down right-back down the line. Frimpong could end up starting the season with his minutes limited (PA Archive) Analysing the Slot system, Frimpong seems to be in this position of limbo when looking at where he's thrived most over the past two years. However, what Slot proved within the first couple games of his tenure on Merseyside was his transformational powers. The reinvention of a raw, attacking-minded Ryan Gravenberch into one of the best defensive midfield playmakers in the world was nothing short of remarkable. Gravenberch, countryman and close friend to Frimpong, will no doubt have relayed the wonders that Slot, another Dutchman, can do. Although there remain question marks over Frimpong's role, we should expect them to be answered soon enough. Liverpool's has been all but flawless in recent times - Richard Hughes and Michael Edwards seem to know what they're doing. Whether a surprise tactical shift is in the offing or not, Liverpool will have a clear idea on how they can mould Frimpong into the player they require as they look to successfully defend their Premier League title.

Federico Chiesa breaks silence on future after frustrating first season at Liverpool
Liverpool forward Federico Chiesa admits a return to Italy is 'something to think about' this summer after becoming all but an afterthought during his first season at Anfield. The 27-year-old endured a frustrating maiden campaign in the Premier League, in which he featured just six times with only one start under his belt since arriving late from Juventus in August for £10m. Advertisement Watch every Fifa Club World Cup game free on DAZN. Sign up here now. It was a fee that looked a bargain at the time, with Liverpool securing the services of a player that only three years earlier had a nine-figure price tag on his head, having set the footballing world alight as part of Italy's Euros triumph in 2021. He nevertheless ended the season as a Premier League champion and is currently targeting a return to pre-season training on July 8. But asked about a return to his homeland, the Italy international told La Gazzetta dello Sport: 'That's something to think about during the summer. 'My family, my agent and I have a great relationship with Liverpool, and the goal is to be ready for the pre-season. We'll find the best solution for everyone. Federico Chiesa (holding trophy, right) became a Premier League champion despite being a bit-part player (Getty) 'While out of the squad (at Juventus), I was able to train in great condition, but I missed playing friendlies. I had to start from scratch at Liverpool and that held me back. 'I hope (next season) it's my season. My dream is to participate in the World Cup.' Chiesa made 14 appearances across all competitions, although was limited to just 466 minutes after being blighted by early-season fitness problems. He scored two goals and notched two assists, bagging a stoppage-time consolation in the Carabao Cup final defeat to Newcastle back in March.
