'The problem with Virat Kohli ... ': Ex-India cricketer exposes star batter's struggles

Virat Kohli (AFP Photo) NEW DELHI: Former India all-rounder Irfan Pathan has responded to criticism directed at him for his remarks on Virat Kohli 's batting, particularly surrounding the star batter's retirement from Test cricket in May after a disappointing series in Australia in 2024-25. Kohli managed just 190 runs in nine innings during the series, despite scoring a century in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. Kohli announced his retirement from the longest format just before India's squad selection for the England Tests, a decision that came amid a visible dip in his red-ball form. His struggles were evident in the pattern of dismissals, with the former captain frequently falling in the slips or to the wicketkeeper. Go Beyond The Boundary with our YouTube channel. I thought that when a player of big stature undergoes their first slump, then they should be backed. If you look at my social media, I backed him a lot. One, he deserved it, and won a lot of matches. If the slump continues for five years, then it's not right," Pathan told Lallantop. Poll Do you agree with Irfan Pathan's criticism of Virat Kohli's batting performance? Yes, he is right No, he is too harsh Pathan stressed that the team's success must always remain the priority. "Eventually, the team has to be at the top. Team is No. 1; we play for the team, we play to win games. If a batsman gets out in a similar manner, the opposition team plans accordingly. They won't go to plan B. They will get you out using plan A. If you're a champion player, then you've to take them from plan A to plan B. The problem with Virat in Test cricket was that he was getting out similarly every now and then. That doesn't mean he's a bad player; he's a champion player, but it's happening. You've to explain what you are seeing in detail," he said Virat Kohli, Ravi Shastri & India's Pace Revolution | Bharat Arun Reveals Untold Team India Stories The former cricketer also elaborated on his role as a commentator, underlining that his accountability lies with the fans: "See, I believe that as a broadcaster, when the commentary is going on and the fans are watching the match, you have to go ahead of the visuals and speak about what's happening. The broadcaster and commentator's work is - what is happening and why it is happening. What can happen and how? If a player is doing exceptionally well, you praise him, and if they are not performing well, then criticize him. The commentators' responsibility is towards the fans, not players. Mohammed Siraj Set To Be Ignored For Asia Cup 2025: Report

Mohammed Siraj is reportedly likely to miss the 2025 Asia Cup, while Shubman Gill would need a big vouch from head coach Gautam Gambhir to be considered. The highest wicket-taker in the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy, Mohammed Siraj, is likely to miss out on the 2025 Asia Cup. According to a report in Cricbuzz, spearhead Jasprit Bumrah, left-arm quick Arshdeep Singh, and one of Harshit Rana and Prasidh Krishna are likely to constitute the pace attack for the multi-national tournament. Siraj has been the apple of the nation's eye after his match-winning fifer at the Oval in the last Test, but his T20 credentials aren't as solid as some of his competitors. He had a good, 16-wicket season in IPL 2025 but Prasidh (Purple Cap winner), Bumrah and Arshdeep all took more wickets than him. Whereas, Rana was one of the best bowlers in the league last season and impressed in his debut series against England earlier this year. Meanwhile, the report said, Test captain Shubman Gill is unlikely to make the cut, too, unless head coach Gautam Gambhir makes a strong case for him in the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI)'s selection meeting in Mumbai, scheduled for August 19. He was the second-highest run-scorer in the IPL 2025 and led the Gujarat Titans well for the second time, but his runs came as an opener. The report said Sanju Samson, who scored three centuries in T20Is last year, and Abhishek Sharma, the top-ranked batter by ICC in the format, are locked in as the first-choice options. The spot for a backup opener/batter is still available, but currently, Mumbai and Rajasthan Royals' Yashasvi Jaiswal is ahead. His Mumbai teammate Shreyas Iyer is unlikely to join him, as per the report, while Jitesh Sharma (and not the likes of Rishabh Pant and KL Rahul) is expected to be the backup wicketkeeper. The report mentioned Axar Patel as the vice-captain, despite some rumors that Gill could replace him in that role with the team's eyes on the long-term future under captain Suryakumar Yadav. Hardik Pandya is cemented as one of the all-rounders, with Shivam Dube and Washington Sundar vying for the other spot. Kuldeep Yadav, Varun Chakaravarthy and Ravi Bishnoi are expected to join Patel in the spin quartet in helpful conditions in the UAE. India's campaign in the Asia Cup starts on September 10. view comments First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Please keep discussions respectful and constructive.
