Local care specialists launch first-ever ‘memory cafe' in the Upstate

Yahoo03-03-2025
GREENVILLE, S.C. (WSPA) – Some Upstate care providers are bringing a new concept to the region they said will benefit families of adults with dementia.
The Blake at Hollingsworth Park Assisted Living and Think Different Dementia are two partners behind a first of its kind 'memory cafe' in Greenville. 'The Upstate Memory Cafe' provides a community setting where people living with dementia and their caregivers can bond.
'My hope would be that this would be a place where these people can actually find value or have value for themselves in making other friendships. And the family caregivers also making friendships with other people that they may never have been in contact with before,' said Think Different Dementia Founder Lizette Cloete.
Organizers told 7NEWS the 'memory cafe' offers a space where attendees play cards, make flowers and do other activities together. They said ten to twelve home health care and hospice representatives are present for each meeting and educate families on best dementia care practices, while offering them support and respite services. Partners in the initiative said the environment promotes trust, inclusivity and acceptance.
'Dementia doesn't have any borders, and so we want to make sure we support everyone in the community,' said Darrian Pennant, a representative of The Blake at Hollingsworth Park Assisted Living. 'We want to give them a space where if they're comfortable they can jump right in, and begin to support either their loved one, or someone else's loved one.'
'The Upstate Memory Cafe' will meet the last Saturday of every month. The first meeting kicks off on Saturday, March 29th at 9:30am at The Blake at Hollingsworth Park and will feature live music and entertainment. Space is limited to twenty families and registration is available on a first-come first-serve basis.
Those who are interested in participating in the 'memory cafe' can RSVP with The Blake at Hollingsworth Park by calling (864) 318-9452.

WNBA power rankings: With trade deadline looming and injuries threatening, league-leading Lynx and Liberty level up

The Minnesota Lynx and New York Liberty have been at the top of the standings all year after meeting in last year's WNBA Finals. By every measurement possible, they are the two best teams in the WNBA. Still, with veteran general managers and coaches, they both have shown that the best teams don't stand pat and hope their good fortune will continue. The Liberty struck first, officially signing Belgian superstar Emma Meesseman last week. She hadn't played in a WNBA game since 2022 as she focused on building up the Belgian national team, which just repeated its EuroBasket title. She also won two EuroLeague titles and two EuroLeague MVPs in her time away from the WNBA. Meesseman is a skilled, smart player who elevates her teammates, and signing her was a huge boon for New York. The move was especially prescient as Breanna Stewart went down with a bone bruise on her knee on June 26; she currently has no timetable for a return. On Sunday against the Connecticut Sun, Meesseman scored 11 points in her 2025 debut in 17 minutes, showing some rust early but appearing more comfortable in the second half. 'I think just giving them some minutes, some glue, moving the ball, hitting people open. Just beautiful basketball, being a part of that already in New York,' Meesseman said after the game. 'One of my mottos is to keep it simple. If it works, it works. If you see someone open and they cut, give them the ball and get a layup. It's easy.' Just a few hours earlier, the Minnesota Lynx made a big move to strengthen their roster, trading for the Wings' Dijonai Carrington, who was named the league's Most Improved Player in 2024 and was on the first All-Defensive Team. Minnesota sent Diamond Miller and Karlie Samuelson to Dallas, as well as a 2027 second-round draft pick, in exchange for Carrington. The move came one day after Napheesa Collier left the Lynx's blowout win over the Aces with an ankle injury. According to ESPN, Collier is expected to miss two weeks with the injury. Similar to Stewart, Collier is the heart of her team, and she will be missed as her 2025 MVP campaign gets put on hold. This makes Carrington's arrival even more important. Minnesota is already strong on defense, leading the league by a healthy margin in defensive rating at 95.1. But Carrington will give them even more of a bite on defense, as her play can be downright menacing to opponents. She's also already played with Lynx players Courtney Williams and Natisha Hiedeman when all three were in Connecticut. While it remains to be seen how these moves will play out for the Liberty and Lynx — less than a week removed from their first Finals rematch of the season — the fact that both teams have been so aggressive shows they both expect to play for the title. Fans will not have to wait long to see how Meesseman and Carrington impact their respective teams, because for reasons that only the WNBA scheduling gods know, the Lynx and Liberty will face off three more times in a span of 10 days this month. Though with the Lynx likely without Collier for that stretch, it will be difficult to determine how well-matched these teams really are. Performer of the week: Sabrina Ionescu, New York Liberty Playing without Breanna Stewart, the New York Liberty struggled, losing consecutive games to the Sparks, Wings, Lynx and Sun over the last week and a half. On Sunday, playing in Connecticut, Sabrina Ionescu came alive. She scored 36 points and grabbed 11 rebounds to help the Liberty break their losing streak in a 87-78 win over the Sun. Game of the week Indiana Fever at Phoenix Mercury, Thursday, 10 p.m. ET on League Pass: This is one worth staying up late for. Indiana has hit a hot streak at the right time, winning five straight ahead of Tuesday night's matchup with the Sparks, even without Caitlin Clark. Phoenix, meanwhile, has been struggling, losing five of its last seven. The two teams are both battling for home-court advantage in the first round of the playoffs, with the Mercury holding a slight advantage, so Thursday's game could be key for tiebreakers. We finally have the first photo of Eve Jobs' (Steve Jobs' daughter) wedding dress ...and it was worth the wait

Steve Jobs' daughter, Eve Jobs, wed Olympian Harry Charles in a sleek Givenchy white dress with lace details. She shared first photos on her personal Instagram. Steve Jobs' daughter Eve Jobs posted her first wedding photo on Instagram this past Sunday, August 3, sharing a glimpse into her nuptials with British Olympic equestrian Harry Charles. Eve celebrated her marriage to Charles, marked by an Instagram reveal showing the couple in wedding attire amid scenic surroundings. The post, shared on Sunday, showcased the newlyweds and gave fans a peek into their special day. Charles, who has competed at the Olympic level for Great Britain in show jumping, and Eve reportedly tied the knot in late July in an intimate but lavish ceremony. The celebration is believed to have taken place in the picturesque Cotswolds area, England, where friends and family gathered to honour the couple. Guests included Jessica Springsteen (Bruce Springsteen's daughter) as well as Jennifer Gates (Bill Gates' daughter). Since the wedding announcement, media outlets have reported the event incurred multi‑million‑dollar costs, with estimates around $6.7 million, fueling interest in the extravagant details and guest list. Eve, the youngest daughter of the late Apple co‑founder Steve Jobs and Laurene Powell Jobs, has steadily built her own life away from Silicon Valley's spotlight. She forged a dual path as an equestrian and fashion model. Her modelling debut came in 2020 with a Glossier holiday ad campaign, and in 2022 she signed with renowned agency DNA Model Management. Since then, she's walked runways and appeared at high‑fashion events worldwide. At the same time Eve trained and competed in show jumping from a young age, achieving top‑ranking status among riders under 25 and participating in international competitions. Her relationship with Charles became public during the 2024 Paris Olympics, where he won gold in equestrian jumping. Eve shared a heartfelt Instagram post celebrating his victory that drew widespread attention. Solve the daily Crossword

EFRAG feeds back on IASB exposure draft on provisions improvements

The European Financial Reporting Advisory Group (EFRAG) has released a feedback statement on the International Accounting Standards Board's (IASB) Exposure Draft (ED) Provisions – Targeted Improvements. EFRAG's statement summarises stakeholder feedback and explains how it informed EFRAG's final comment letter (FCL), submitted to the IASB on 1 April 2025, in response to the IASB's ED IASB/ED/2024/8. The ED proposed amendments to three aspects of IAS 37 Provisions, Contingent Liabilities and Contingent Assets. These include the criteria for recognising a provision, specifically the requirement for a present obligation from a past event, the requirements for measuring a provision related to future expenditure and the discount rate used to bring that expenditure to present value. The FCL assessed that the proposals create less clear guidance for some types of provisions. Additionally, EFRAG found that the proposals increase reliance on judgement, which may not lead to a reduction in compliance costs. A consequence of amending the present obligation recognition criterion is the withdrawal of IFRIC 21 Levies. EFRAG welcomed this but noted that the Exposure Draft did not fully address previously raised concerns regarding IFRIC 21. EFRAG recommended that the IASB refine definitions of legal and constructive obligations, specify criteria for exchange transactions, define qualifying past events, clarify actions taken over time and determine when an entity cannot avoid an action. EFRAG also suggested field-testing the requirements and improving examples in the proposed guidance for IAS 37. In the FCL, EFRAG supported proposed improvements to the measurement of provisions, specifically the clarification of required expenditure and specifying a risk-free discount rate, excluding non-performance risk. However, EFRAG highlighted several areas needing further guidance and clarification. EFRAG suggested that the IASB could finalise the measurement amendments more quickly than those related to the present obligation recognition criterion.
