Asian stocks were mixed in early trades despite Wall Street indices finishing at fresh records overnight following solid American jobs data as US President Donald Trump's sweeping budget bill successfully reached the congressional finish line.
In Hong Kong, the benchmark Hang Seng Index lost 169 points, or 0.7 percent, to open at 23,900.
Across the border, mainland Chinese stocks opened lower, with the benchmark Shanghai Composite Index down 0.05 percent to open at 3,459 while the Shenzhen Component Index opened flat at 10,534.
The ChiNext Index, tracking China's Nasdaq-style board of growth enterprises, was up 0.2 percent to open at 2,168.
Further afield, Australian shares moved closer to a record high, boosted by technology and financial stocks ahead of an expected interest rate cut by the local central bank next week, though losses in commodity stocks capped gains.
The S&P/ASX 200 index rose 0.2 percent to 8,611 points by midday local time, just 27 points shy of the record high hit on June 11.
The benchmark has gained more than one percent so far this week and is headed for its best week since mid-May. (Xinhua/Reuters/AFP)

'Expand cross-boundary travel scheme if smooth'
'Expand cross-boundary travel scheme if smooth' CY Leung said that while the starting quota is small for the Southbound Travel for Guangdong Vehicles scheme, it represents significant progress. File photo: RTHK Former Chief Executive CY Leung said on Sunday that authorities should consider expanding a new cross-boundary travel scheme if its initial implementation proves successful. By the end of the year, mainland motorists will be able to apply for the Southbound Travel for Guangdong Vehicles scheme. Up to 100 vehicles per day will be permitted to access Hong Kong's urban areas. Speaking on a TVB programme, Leung, who is a vice-chairman of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, said while the starting quota is small, it represents significant progress. "We can observe the situation. We can review it a few weeks after implementation. If it works, we can then allow more vehicles," he said. "At the same time, I think we should also consider whether, in addition to allowing 100 vehicles into the urban areas, we could allow another batch of vehicles to move around Lantau Island, but that they would not be permitted to cross the Tsing Ma Bridge? "After all, Lantau has more space. I believe this would further leverage the integration role of the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge." Leung also said differing holiday schedules between Hong Kong and the mainland present an opportunity. With Hong Kong's market often quieter during holiday periods, more Guangdong vehicles could potentially be accommodated under the scheme. Meanwhile, participants in both the southbound and northbound travel schemes can only cross the border via the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge at the moment. Looking ahead, Leung suggested authorities consider opening other land ports and implementing a "co-location arrangement", which would allow travellers to complete customs and immigration procedures for both Hong Kong and the mainland at a single checkpoint.

File photo: RTHK Financial Secretary Paul Chan says Exchange Traded Products (ETPs) have contributed to the improving performance of the stock market in the first half of the year. Writing on his blog on Sunday, the minister said there are more than 210 ETPs listed on the local bourse and their combined market value of nearly HK$510 billion is up 30 percent from 2020. Chan said ETPs provide more choices for investors as they are linked to different kinds of assets. Chan also said the city's IPO performance is currently the best in the world, with more than HK$107 billion raised so far this year. Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing has also received another 200 listing applications from Middle East and Southeast Asian enterprises. The finance chief added that the government will step up promotion of the local financial market, so worldwide investors understand Hong Kong's advantages and potential. Chan will head to Seoul this week to tell South Korean investors and financial institutions about the latest developments of the Hong Kong market.
