FSSAI urges states to intensify inspections against illegal ripening agents, synthetic coatings in fruits

New Delhi [India], May 20 (ANI): The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has urged all States and Union Territories to intensify inspections and carry out special enforcement drives to curb the illegal use of non-permitted fruit ripening agents and the colouring and coating of fruits with synthetic colours or non-permitted wax, according to a release.
The Commissioners of Food Safety of all States/UTs and Regional Directors of FSSAI have been requested to maintain strict vigilance over fruit markets and mandis, to curb illegal use of fruit ripening using agents like calcium carbide, commonly known as 'masala'.
As part of the enforcement drive, go-downs and storage facilities, particularly those suspected of using substances like calcium carbide for ripening, may be inspected.
The presence of calcium carbide on the premises or stored alongside crates of fruits will be treated as circumstantial evidence against the Food Business Operator (FBO), potentially leading to prosecution under the Food Safety and Standards (FSS) Act 2006.
According to the release, calcium carbide is strictly prohibited for the artificial ripening of fruits under the Food Safety and Standards (Prohibition and Restrictions on Sales) Regulations, 2011. The use of this substance poses serious health risks. It is known to cause mouth ulcers, gastric irritation, and carcinogenic properties.
Further, FSSAI has also identified cases where FBOs are using ethephon solution to artificially ripen bananas and other fruits by dipping them directly into the chemical. In this context, the Authority has issued a comprehensive guidance document titled 'Artificial Ripening of Fruits - Ethylene Gas: A Safe Fruit Ripener'
The release noted that the document clearly states that ethephon may be used only as a source for generating ethylene gas and strictly in accordance with the prescribed Standard Operating Procedure (SOP).
This SOP details all critical aspects of artificial ripening using ethylene gas, including restrictions, chamber requirements, handling conditions, sources of ethylene gas, application protocols, post-treatment operations, and safety guidelines. FSSAI urges all Food Business Operators to adhere to these SOPs to ensure safe and compliant ripening practices.
FSSAI reiterates that any violation of these norms will attract strict penal action under the FSS Act, 2006. The Authority encourages all stakeholders in the supply chain, including FBOs and consumers, to remain vigilant and ensure that only safe and legally compliant fruits reach the market to ensure food safety and quality. NEW DELHI: To strengthen India's regulatory framework on food labelling, advertisement, and claims, the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) on Wednesday convened a national stakeholder consultation to review the effectiveness of existing regulations, to address implementation challenges, and explore ways to align with global standards. This is to strengthen consumer protection. The national consultation, which involved various ministries, was conducted following the Supreme Court's order last month, which gave the FSSAI three months to make its recommendations on the proposed move to introduce mandatory warning labels on the front of packaged food items. The meeting came a day after 29 public health organisations issued a consensus statement proposing that the FSSAI implement front‑of‑pack nutrition labelling (FOPL) warning labels (WLs) on food products found high in fats/sugars or salt (HFSS). The consensus statement, published in the Journal of Preventive Medicine Research and Reviews, proposes that the government replace the proposed Indian Nutrition Rating (or Health Star Rating) system with front-of-pack warning labels, restrict marketing to children, and ensure that trade agreements do not undermine public health policy.

New Delhi [India], August 13 (ANI): The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) convened a high-level National Stakeholder Consultation on Food Labelling, Advertisement and Claims here in the national capital, bringing together over 700 participants from government, industry, academia, consumer bodies, and regulatory authorities. According to a statement from the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, the consultation aimed to review existing regulations, address implementation challenges, and align India's standards with global best practices to boost consumer protection, public health, and industry innovation. In her inaugural address, Health Secretary Punya Salila Srivastava stressed the importance of ethical and truthful practices in the rapidly evolving food sector. "We are now exposed to the entire world, which means we must adopt positive changes and scrutinise food products more closely," she noted, adding that such consultations are "vital" in shaping future policy. Nidhi Khare, Secretary, Department of Consumer Affairs, called for an end to misleading advertising and urged manufacturers to treat labelling as a "factor of trust" rather than merely a marketing tool. "Consumers should be left to make the final choice based on truthful and honest declarations," she emphasised, urging collective responsibility to ensure accuracy and transparency in product information. Sanjeev Sanyal, Member, Economic Advisory Council to the Prime Minister, underscored the need for external validation of scientific claims in advertisements. He welcomed FSSAI's decision to implement all label changes annually on July 1, reducing uncertainty for the labelling industry. Additional Secretary, Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, Prabhat, warned against false health and nutrition claims, highlighting their potential to erode public trust and harm health. The event featured technical sessions on global and Indian regulatory frameworks, enforcement case studies, and interactive discussions. Stakeholders exchanged insights on industry accountability, consumer rights, and collaborative enforcement strategies, resulting in actionable recommendations to enhance transparency and trust in food labelling and advertising. This consultation is part of FSSAI's ongoing national dialogue series aimed at building practical, health-aligned policies through close collaboration with industry, academia, and consumer organizations. Aman Jha, a 26-year-old man injured in a road accident, tragically lost his life after being denied treatment by several private clear directives under the Farishtey Scheme, a government initiative that guarantees free emergency treatment for accident victims at both public and empanelled private hospitals for the first 72 hours, Jha was repeatedly turned Ashok Agarwal, a member of the Delhi High Court-appointed Free Beds Monitoring Committee, condemned the hospitals' actions in a formal complaint to the Delhi Health Secretary. He stated that the refusal to treat Jha not only violated the scheme's guidelines but also breached legal provisions that allow for punitive measures, including cancellation of hospital accused the hospitals of placing financial interests above human life, despite being fully aware of their obligations under the law. After being denied care at multiple facilities, Jha was finally admitted to a government hospital, but by then, it was too late. He succumbed to his has called on the Delhi government's Nursing Home Cell to take decisive action against the institutions involved. He stated that such negligence undermines the very foundation of emergency care policies designed to protect and preserve life. (ANI)
