Haunting moment Felix Baumgartner prepares paraglider for doomed flight before death

Extreme sports athlete Felix Baumgartner tragically plunged to his death during a paragliding accident in Italy. His partner has shared what he was doing before the deadly flight
Harrowing footage has captured a paraglider's final moments before he plummeted to his death during a doomed flight.

Felix Baumgartner, who hit headlines after jumping from the edge of space in 2012, tragically died in a paragliding accident in Italy on Thursday. The 56-year-old, from Austria, plunged into the side of a swimming pool in the city of Porto Sant Elpidio.

His partner, Michela Radulescuhas, has since released a heartbreaking video of Baumgartner preparing for the ride. She posted the video on Twitter and said: "For over 12 years I was there for every take off and landing, from skydiving, paragliding, helicopter flights, paramotor to aerobatic shows. And when I couldn't be there for some heli flights, we had the WLC code - 'the Wifey Landing Call'. Never missed one. Except …this one."

The city's mayor, Massimiliano Ciarpella, confirmed Baumgartner's death in a social media post. 'Our community is deeply affected by the tragic disappearance of Felix Baumgartner, a figure of global prominence, a symbol of courage and passion for extreme flight,' Mr Ciarpella said.
Baumgartner, known as 'Fearless Felix', stunned the world in 2012 when he became the first human to break the sound barrier with only his body. He wore a pressurised suit and jumped from a capsule hoisted more than 24 miles above Earth by a giant helium balloon over New Mexico.

The Austrian, who was part of the Red Bull Stratos team, topped out at 843.6 mph, the equivalent of 1.25 times the speed of sound, during a nine-minute descent. 'When I was standing there on top of the world, you become so humble, you do not think about of breaking records any more, you do not think of about gaining scientific data.
'The only thing you want is to come back alive,' he said after landing in the eastern New Mexico desert. The altitude from which he jumped also marked the highest for a skydiver, shattering the previous record set in 1960 by Joe Kittinger, who was an adviser to Baumgartner during his feat.

Baumgartner's altitude record stood for two years until Google executive Alan Eustace set new marks for the highest free-fall jump and greatest free-fall distance. In 2012, millions watched YouTube 's livestream as Baumgartner coolly flashed a thumbs-up when he came out of the capsule high above Earth and then activated his parachute as he neared the ground, lifting his arms in victory after he landed.
Baumgartner, a former Austrian military parachutist, made thousands of jumps from planes, bridges, skyscrapers and famed landmarks around the world, including the Christ the Redeemer statue in Brazil. In 2003, he flew across the English Channel in a carbon fibre wing after being dropped from a plane.
In recent years, he performed with The Flying Bulls as a helicopter stunt pilot in shows across Europe. He later said travelling faster than sound is 'hard to describe because you don't feel it'.
'Sometimes we have to get really high to see how small we are,' he said.

Anthony Joshua reveals plan to retire from boxing

Anthony Joshua has suggested that he will retire from boxing this year. The 35-year-old has not fought since he was knocked out by Daniel Dubois in the fifth round at Wembley last September. Joshua required elbow surgery after his defeat to Dubois and the two-time unified heavyweight champion does not have another opponent lined up, although his promoter, Eddie Hearn, has held talks over a possible fight with YouTuber-turned-boxer Jake Paul. Boxing fans are also holding out hope of Joshua finally facing Tyson Fury, who announced his retirement from boxing in January after his rematch defeat to Oleksandr Usyk the previous month. However, in a post on Instagram on Friday night, Joshua paid tribute to his promotional team Matchroom Boxing, who have managed him since his professional debut in 2013, but said his 'last punch' will be thrown this year. 'Shout to Matchroom Boxing for all you have done for me and continue to do for me,' Joshua wrote. 'Long may you reign supreme and keep giving fighters opportunities to become champions and make boxing great. '12 years ago, I signed with you and 12 years later I will throw my last punch with you. 'Royalty and loyalty is a perfect match for the great good. A toast to another 100 years of Matchroom Boxing 'And to finish on this… If I could start from scratch, I wouldn't change shit.' Speaking after Usyk's dominant victory over Dubois last Saturday, Hearn revealed that Joshua would agree to a fight with Paul. 'It sounds like AJ is going to fight Jake Paul. If he's [Paul] true to his word, the fight will happen,' Hearn said in an interview with The Stomping Ground. 'It's great that Tyson Fury is saying that Jake Paul is going to win. 'I mean, maybe I've just lost my mind but if they truly want that fight, I reached out to Nakisa [Bidarian, co-founder of Most Valuable Promotions] earlier and we're going to have a chat next week. 'If they truly want the fight we can make, actually, the fight that does the biggest numbers in the sport. Forget Canelo vs Terence Crawford that doesn't even touch the surface of – and I can't believe I'm saying it – of AJ against Jake Paul. 'If you want to do the biggest numbers in the sport we'll make it happen but please, be careful what you wish for. 'This isn't a game, this isn't a YouTube video, this isn't numbers, this isn't algorithms, this is physically dangerous. So if you want to do it, be careful. But we will do it. More Trending 'We've always said, 'yeah of course we do it', but I just didn't think anyone would even give it the credibility. 'I'm not going to argue about it. I'm just telling you and I'm telling Jake Paul, this is very dangerous. So if you're for real, just understand the consequences that come with a fight like this. 'Ask Francis Ngannou who, in my opinion, would destroy Jake Paul. 'But good luck to the man, if you're game and you want to roll the dice, we're ready.' Lewis Hamilton puts Toto Wolff in awkward position with Kimi Antonelli offer

Kimi Antonelli is out of contract at the end of the season, but it appears as though Mercedes have made a decision on his future, with Toto Wolff confirming that the team want to keep him Lewis Hamilton offered to teach rookie Kimi Antonelli how to "work" Toto Wolff in order to secure better contract terms at Mercedes. The seven-time Formula 1 champion spent 12 years with the Brackley-based team, earning hundreds of millions of pounds during that spell. ‌ Antonelli's contractual situation remains far less secure than his predecessor's, who has committed to a multi-year agreement with Ferrari after switching from Mercedes during the winter break. But the 18-year-old currently only has a deal with the Silver Arrows until the end of the current season. ‌ The Italian youngster has already claimed his first F1 podium finish, though he has also committed some expensive mistakes – which is to be expected from a newcomer to the sport who has been fast-tracked in the way Antonelli has. ‌ Team principal Wolff has faith in Antonelli's abilities, demonstrated clearly by the decision to elevate him to a Mercedes racing seat following just half-a-season in Formula 2. And he conceded before the start of this season that the teenager would still be raw. Nevertheless, with the possibility of securing Max Verstappen's signature for 2026, the Austrian has chosen not to extend either of his current drivers' deals. Antonelli was questioned about his contract discussions before the Belgian Grand Prix. "That's the one-million dollar question," he began, before Sky Sports commentator David Croft interjected and jokingly asked whether that represented his Mercedes salary. Before the 18-year-old could continue his response, Hamilton, who was seated next to him during the press conference, intervened. READ MORE: Max Verstappen to Mercedes rumours will only intensify after George Russell admission The Brit declared: "I can help you with the contract. I know how to work Toto, don't worry." Antonelli, chuckling, went on to say: "I've never been worried, to be honest. I know the situation, and I know what the team wants, especially looking at the future. So I think also Toto has been clear recently, and that's obviously good to see. ‌ "But I think the team is working well. The line-up is good. I mean me and George are working well together, and we are trying to work together as a team to find performance again. I think we're doing a pretty good job, and there's a really good atmosphere in the team." "I'm sure the team knows what's the best for especially next year, and I'm pretty confident that I'm in a good position." Luckily for Antonelli, it seems Wolff has made up his mind. Before the race in Spa-Francorchamps, he told ORF: "So they are all up to date. The direction of travel is definitely that we want to continue with George and Kimi. "That is the absolute priority. But you can't look past someone like Max and the plans he has for the future. We did that, but I don't think there will be any big surprises."

Lee Westwood jumps 3,759 spots in golf rankings as Jon Rahm admits he won't make sacrifice

With the majors now completed and both the PGA Tour and LIV Golf seasons winding down, attention continues to slowly turn towards the Ryder Cup in the golf world The professional golf season is nearing its conclusion after Scottie Scheffler claimed the final major of the year at The Open. But there's still more action on the PGA Tour and LIV Golf this week. ‌ Scheffler and most of his closest rivals have opted to skip the 3M Open at TPC Twin Cities, but LIV UK will feature all of their big hitters like Bryson DeChambeau and Jon Rahm - who you won't be seeing competing on YouTube anytime soon. ‌ And of course, one eye is now on the Ryder Cup, which is just two months away. Here, Mirror Sport rounds up the latest golf headlines from around the world. ‌ Lee Westwood's rankings rant It was a good week for Lee Westwood at Royal Portrush. The English veteran finished T34 on three under, which shot him up a remarkable 3,579 places in the Official World Golf Ranking to No. 930. LIV stars like himself still don't earn ranking points outside of the majors, Asian Tour and DP World Tour, with the league's latest application currently under review. Rather than celebrate his climb, Westwood, who had to go through a qualifier to make The Open, took the chance to express his frustrations. "I think that just proves that without world ranking points, it makes a bit of a mockery of the system," he said. "I think mainly it relates back to wanting the best players in the major championships, not wanting this conversation where there's a few people missing out because we don't get world ranking points on LIV." Jon Rahm's take on YouTube golf DeChambeau has done a great job of raising his profile on YouTube, where he now boasts over two million subscribers. But while Rahm is happy to appear in those sort of videos, he won't be starting a channel of his own for fear of it taking away from the other priorities in his life. 'The main argument, and I can't stress this enough, against doing it is that I just don't think I would have the time to balance family, golf and YouTube," the Spaniard explained. "I have three young kids - at some point I just don't think I would have the time to do it. ‌ 'It would be too much of a sacrifice of either me practicing or family time. As of right now, that's not something I'm willing to do. As of right now I'm perfectly happy appearing on channels. "I'm perfectly happy playing with those guys and in a way getting exposed to their audience…. but I don't know if I would yet find the energy in me to try to find the time to do a channel myself.' Bryson DeChambeau forces intervention For now, both Rahm and DeChambeau will be focusing on LIV's latest stop at the JCB Golf & Country Club, whose sponsors have taken drastic action to stop the latter from wreaking too much havoc with his ridiculous drives. ‌ With the American often topping 400 yards, JCB cranes holding up temporary netting have been placed at the end of the driving range to prevent any potential problems. While it's more so a promotional stunt, it did give golf fans a chuckle. It was also confirmed LIV will be hosted by JCB in the UK again next year. ‌ Ian Poulter's Ryder Cup warning DeChambeau has already kicked off the Ryder Cup mind games, warning Team Europe they'll be facing a "tsunami" of American support at Bethpage Black and promising to "get in Rory McIlroy's ear" if they're pitted against one another. And Ian Poulter is conscious that the home advantage could be a major factor, with the five-time Ryder Cup winner issuing a warning for captain Luke Donald. He told Sky Sports: "Away Ryder Cups are notoriously difficult. ‌ "It's the same when they come to our home soil too. Home advantage is a big factor. Luke has got a venue in Bethpage Black that is going to be very loud, very raucous. We've had numerous events at that location in the past, so they certainly know what they are going to be in for." Sergio Garcia's captaincy admission As for the 2031 Ryder Cup, Spain will host for the second time in history, it was confirmed this week. That will be particularly poignant for Team Europe legend Sergio Garcia. While his current focus is on making Donald's team for this year, the LIV star admitted that taking the captaincy reins off of him in the future would be something he'd relish. Speaking just 48 hours before the Ryder Cup's return to his homeland was confirmed, Garcia said: "I don't want to think about it yet, but it's something that obviously would be a nice thing, a nice honour to have. I really don't want to think about that right now. I've got my mind on other things."
