Prez Murmu petitioned to initiate creation of separate ‘Garoland'
2
Shillong: President Droupadi Murmu has been petitioned by the Garoland State Movement Committee (GSMC) to initiate creation of a separate state for the matrilineal Garo tribal community, carved out of Meghalaya and certain Garo-inhabited areas in Assam.
Asserting that the 'rights of Garo people should be protected', the petition highlighted 'problems' faced by the bonafide Garo citizens in their 'own lands'.
Stating that the demand for creation of a separate Garoland State is 'not a new thing', the petition said that it, in fact, is a century-old issue which dates back to India's pre-Independence era.
"The movement for the creation of Garoland State comprising predominantly Garo inhabited areas of the erstwhile undivided Assam and vast chunks of land occupied by the indigenous Garo Tribe spread over Mymensing and Dhaka Districts now in present day Bangladesh was spearheaded by a patriotic Garo leader Late Matgrik Sonaram R Sangma during British Regime in 1895, which was much earlier than the movement for India's Independence by Mahatma Gandhi," the petition said.
The memorandum said successive Garo leaders had pursued the same issue with the erstwhile undivided state of Assam and thereafter the state of Meghalaya since 1972 and the successive central govts but 'this genuine issue remained unattended to'. "Garos are peace loving people and believe in dialogue and negotiation to address any issue, unlike others who choose violence to press demands," the petition said.
Stating that the Garo, Khasi and Jaintia tribal communities have been living peacefully, the petition, however, pointed out that all three have different languages, cultures, customs, traditions, believes, local governance and even land holding systems, and that the 'three tribes are totally different from each other, which impedes the growth of the state and its people altogether', adding that the Garo Hills has remained economically backward.
In the light of these issues, the GSMC urged the President to consider their demand for a separate Garoland state.

Farmers in Madurai complain about irregularities in paddy procurement
Considering the number of complaints raised by farmers in Madurai district with regard to irregularities in paddy procurement, Madurai Collector K. J. Praveen Kumar told the farmers that a meeting will be convened with farmers, agriculture officers and Tamil Nadu Civil Supplies Corporation officials to discuss the issue. The Collector was presiding over the farmers grievance redress meeting held on Thursday at the Madurai Collectorate. The farmers raised several issues during the meeting. Some of the issues were with regard to the release of water for irrigation, desilting of waterbodies and removal of encroachments. The Collector instructed the authorities concerned to conduct an eviction drive to remove the encroachments. There were heated arguments between a section of the farmers during the meeting when the issue regarding the release of water under the 58 canal scheme for irrigation purposes was discussed. Some of the other issues discussed at the meeting were with regard to the implementation of the MGNREGA scheme. The farmers said that the workers could be engaged for agricultural work and it would benefit the farmers. The farmers also sought the removal of seemai karuvelam (Prosopis juliflora) trees. Maoist ‘infiltrates' police, admin groups in Aurangabad
Aurangabad: Aurangabad was jolted by a sensational revelation after police found that a wanted Maoist had successfully infiltrated both the district administration's and police's media coordination groups on an instant messaging platform, police said on Thursday. The breach came to light on Wednesday when Gaya police arrested Alok Sharma, accused in two Maoist-related cases registered at Banke Bazar and Deo police stations. Police sources said Sharma had long been on their radar for his involvement in several major Maoist incidents in Gaya and Aurangabad and had even been arrested earlier in similar cases. What stunned officials was Sharma's digital masquerade. By slipping into the media coordination groups, he allegedly gained access to sensitive updates on police movements and administrative decisions in real time. His arrest exposed the infiltration, sparking a wave of alarm within both the police and the district administration. The fallout was swift. While the district administration merely deleted Sharma's number from its group, the Aurangabad police took an even more drastic step, scrapping their group altogether. In an official statement, the Aurangabad police admitted, "Due to the presence of certain undesirable people, all members have been removed and the official police media group has been closed." Officials confirmed that a new, more secure group would be created, restricted to verified members only. Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI). Trichy corpn may curtail land acquisition for IBT link road
Trichy: Municipal administration minister K N Nehru on Thursday inspected the work for the IBT link road to connect various parts of Trichy city with the KKBT Panjapur through the banks of a river and canal. Trichy corporation sources said that the extent of land acquisition for the project is most likely to be curtailed but without any major alterations to the total length and width of the original plan. The work is undertaken in three phases, with phase I connecting KKBT vicinity with Karumandapam, phase II from Woraiyur to Kudamurutti bridge on Karur national highway, and phase III, the longest stretch from Karumandapam to Woraiyur. Administrative approvals for phases I and II were obtained at 81.7 crore and 68 crore respectively, but phase III proposed at 182 crore is making slow progress due to private land acquisition. Around 20.9 acres of land were slated to be acquired, however, considering the tedious process, the local body is inclined to restrict the land acquisition to around five acres. Multiple sources confirmed that the length and width of the two-lane link road will not be altered much. "We are trying to reduce the extent of land acquisition with a minor modification plan in short stretches so that the work for the pending phase will commence in a month's time without waiting for land acquisition," a source said. The total cost of the 9.9km long link road was estimated at 331.7 crore. IBT link road: Phase From To Length Cost Status Phase I Panjapur Karumandapam 2 km Rs81.7 crore Started Phase II Woraiyur Kudamurutti check post 2.1 km Rs68 crore Started Phase III Karumandapam Woraiyur 5.7 km Rs182 crore Yet to Full proposal Panjapur Kudamurutti check post 9.9 km Rs331.7 crore Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI).
