US committed 'across the board' to LA 2028 success, says Coventry
Zimbabwe's former Olympic swimming champion Coventry officially took over the presidency from Thomas Bach this week following Monday's ceremony in Lausanne.
"There is so much goodwill from all levels of government from the state to the federal," Coventry told a press conference after her first executive board meeting.
"There's an incredible willingness to see that the Olympic Games are a huge success. So the reason I mentioned that is because that gives us faith... that our values will also be heard and that we will be able to ensure successful Games for our athletes."
There have been concerns among international federations regarding travel and visas for the LA Olympics, with the Olympics bringing together 206 national Olympic Committees.
U.S. President Donald Trump issued a directive this month, banning citizens from 12 countries from entering the U.S. as part of an immigration crackdown he said was needed to protect against "foreign terrorists" and other security threats.
Athletes, their coaches and families are exempt from the travel ban, according to U.S. Olympic Committee officials.
"It's our duty to ensure that we work towards that and as of right now, we see that full commitment coming across the board," said Coventry, the first woman and first African to be IOC president.
Los Angeles has been hit by protests against immigration raids in recent weeks, and relations between state and city officials, and the U.S. government, have been tense.
Trump deployed the California National Guard troops to Los Angeles this month, against the wishes of Democratic Governor Gavin Newsom, to quell protests triggered by immigration raids on workplaces by Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents.

WASHINGTON, Aug 4 (Reuters) - Former University of Tennessee football coach Derek Dooley on Monday joined a crowded Republican field aiming to unseat Democratic U.S. Senator Jon Ossoff in Georgia next year, a race Republicans hope will expand their majority in the chamber. Dooley, 57, who is backed by Republican Governor Brian Kemp, touted his readiness to work with President Donald Trump in an announcement that called for low taxes, smaller government, conservative social values and results for Georgians. "I'm going to work with President Trump, fight for you and always put Georgia first," Dooley said in a two-minute video. Dooley, the son of legendary University of Georgia football coach Vince Dooley, has never held public office. He joins a race for the Republican gubernatorial nomination that includes two sitting members of the U.S. House of Representatives, Buddy Carter and Mike Collins. Republicans, who have repeatedly lost U.S. Senate contests in Georgia in recent years, hope to claim Ossoff's seat to expand their 53-47 seat majority in the Senate during a cycle that traditionally punishes the party of the sitting president. Georgia is one of six Senate races that are seen as competitive by political analysts. The other five are in Maine, Michigan, Minnesota, New Hampshire and North Carolina. Democrats face an uphill battle in capturing control of the chamber, as they would need to defend seats in Michigan, Minnesota and New Hampshire where incumbents are retiring and flip at least four Republican-held seats for a majority. They are seen as having better odds of capturing the House of Representatives, though efforts underway in heavily Republican Texas to redraw district lines could dim their chances in that chamber as well. Georgia Republicans had sought to persuade Kemp to run against Ossoff, but the popular two-term governor declined to enter the race. "The latest addition to Georgia's messy and chaotic GOP primary is a failed football coach who has only ever spoken out to cheerlead Medicaid cuts that hurt Georgians," the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee said in a statement. Dooley was head football coach at the University of Tennessee and Louisiana Tech University. He also has coached in the National Football League. Ossoff unseated former Senator David Perdue in a run-off following the November 2020 election. Georgia's other U.S. senator, Democrat Raphael Warnock, defeated former Republican Senator Kelley Loeffler in the 2020 run-off and overcame a challenge from Republican Herschel Walker in a 2022 run-off.

Inside the furious Republican-led effort to STOP Trump from pardoning Ghislaine Maxwell
Donald Trump is facing warnings from Republicans concerned he is considering a pardon for Jeffrey Epstein 's associate Ghislaine Maxwell. While the president has acknowledged his ability to pardon Maxwell for her child sex trafficking crimes, he has not signaled he intends to do so. But after Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche met for interviews with Maxwell in Florida last month, there are concerns that her bid for a pardon might be gaining traction. One senator, who requested anonymity to speak with The Hill about a potential pardon, said that Maxwell has an incentive to 'lie' to get her sentence reduced. This lawmaker warned against trusting anything Maxwell says in her effort for a pardon. 'It's ridiculous that he would consider shortening a sentence for somebody who aided and abetted sexual trafficking as she did,' said the Republican senator. The lawmaker described that argument as specious: 'She's trafficking underage children. I can't imagine anything she could say could nullify her heinous crimes.' Maxwell's attorney David Oscar Markus sent a letter to the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee saying that if his client receives clemency for her 20-year prison sentence, she would go before Congress to testify 'openly and honestly' about Epstein. The panel's Chairman, Rep. James Comer, agreed to postpone Maxwell's testimony, which was initially scheduled for August 11 because her lawyers want to wait until after the Supreme Court considers their appeal of her 2021 conviction. The Bureau of Prisons (BOP) did not publicly specify reasoning for the transfer. Republican Sen. Mike Rounds of South Dakota agreed that Trump and Attorney General Pam Bondi would need a strong justification for pardoning Maxwell – or even commuting her sentence. He said, according to The Hill, that it would be 'difficult' to reason granting Maxwell any pardon or leniency considering the severity of her crimes. Maxwell is currently serving a 20-year prison sentence for her crimes, which include sex trafficking conspiracy and enticing and transporting minors to engage in criminal sexual activity. A senior White House official told the Daily Mail on July 15: 'There have been no discussions or consideration of a pardon for Ghislaine Maxwell, and there never will be.' The whole saga started on July 6 when the Justice Department and FBI released a memo saying that it found in its review of the Epstein files that the child sex criminal died by suicide in prison on August 10, 2019. It also concluded that there was no 'client list' and said no one else would be charged in relation to the crimes. This sent MAGA circles into immediate fury, with some claiming a cover-up was underway and others calling for AG Bondi to be removed from her position. Deputy AG Blanche was subsequently tasked with two-days of talks with Maxwell to find out what the Epstein confidante knew in an effort to quell Trump's base. It's unclear yet what has come from those interviews. Republican Senator Lisa Murkowski of Alaska said she has 'no idea what to expect out' of the conversations between Maxwell and the DOJ. 'Just because she comes and gives testimony doesn't necessarily mean [she] should be given any kind of a pardon, I don't think,' she added. 'There's a lot more that has to be looked at.'
