St Pat's equal club record win in FAI Cup rout

CHRIS FORRESTER SCORED a nonchalant brace as St Patrick's Athletic equalled a club record win to cruise through to the FAI Cup third round with this facile victory over Munster Senior League side UCC at Richmond Park.
Having won the cup twice in the last four years, and five times in total, Stephen Kenny's side were never in danger of losing their record of never having lost to a non-league team in the competition.
Doubtless with Thursday's Conference League home clash with Estonian side Nõmme Kalju in mind, manager Kenny opted for a completely different starting XI from last Thursday's rousing 2-0 win away to FC Hegelmann.
That meant a full debut for 19-year-old midfielder Matthew O'Hara, captain of the club's under-20 side, who recently signed his first professional contract having been at the club since he was 13.
UCC needed a play-off victory to retain their top flight status in the MSL which finished two months ago.
Not only out of season, they travelled to Dublin missing up to a half a dozen first team players in what was head coach Noel Healy's final game over a 15-year association with the university club.
Unsurprisingly, it was one way traffic from the off with UCC goalkeeper Kevin Fitzpatrick inspired early on with fine saves to deny Conor Carty and Aidan Keena before Saints' pressure told on 19 minutes, if not from an expected source.
Zach Elbouzedi pulled the ball back for defender Axel Sjoberg whose low cross was knocked past Fitzpatrick by his unfortunate skipper Colm Murphy for an own goal.
Fitzpatrick made another terrific save to thwart Elbouzedi one-on-one while Carty bounced a header off the crossbar from Brandon Kavanagh's delivery, all a mere prelude to the floodgates opening with a quick-fire treble before half-time.

First, the lively Kavanagh beat Fitzpatrick at his far post with a looping header from Sjoberg's cross on 40 minutes.
Two minutes later Kavanagh's shot was deflected into the path of Keena who cut inside a couple of defenders to drill to the bottom corner.
Skipper Forrester then got in on the act to utterly deflate UCC when casually dribbling past three defenders inside the area to tap home.
The goal deluge continued into the second half with another three scored inside six minutes of the restart.
Scarcely a minute in, Al-Amin Kazeem ghosted in off the left flank to meet Sjoberg's cross and find the top corner for his first goal for the club.

Two minutes later it was 6-0 when half-time substitute Jake Mulraney rifled to the bottom corner from the edge of the area.
Kazeem then provided the cross for Carty to continue the scoring on 51 minutes with a well-placed header.
Forrester completed the rout with his second from a crisp low drive to the net on 68 minutes following debutant substitute Billy Hayes' assist.

Elsewhere in the FAI Cup second round this evening, Longford Town defeated Castlebar Celtic 6-3 in Mayo.
A first-half hat-trick from Daragh Murtagh and Dean George double helped the First Division side to victory.
Castlebar Celtic opened the scoring in the fourth minute through Mark Cunningham, before Murtagh opened his account with 11 on the clock. Eoghan Hughes moved the hosts back into the ascendency four minutes later, but Murtagh hit back with a five-minute brace.
A 39th-minute penalty from Jordan Loftus left it 3-3 at the break.
Castlebar dug deep, and Longford only went in front through substitute George in the 75th minute. Another sub, Francis Campbell, was on target in the final minute of normal time, before George made it 6-3 in the additional period.

Stephen Bradley is braced for a "hostile" reception in Kosovo tonight as Shamrock Rovers look to earn a positive result in the first leg of their Conference League third-round qualifier against Ballkani. They tightened their control of the title race with a 2-0 win against Derry City on Sunday, and are looking in good shape overall as the season enters a crucial period. "The squad is in a good place, so with that, you don't have to take unnecessary risks with certain players," Bradley stressed. "If it was the last game of the season or a cup final last Sunday (against Derry City), there's no doubt Graham (Burke) would've played. "But Graham is so important to us that we don't want to risk losing him for a long period of time. But he's fine and should be back for (tonight) or Sunday (against Galway United). "It's nothing major but we need to be cautious with Graham. Dan Cleary came through OK. He did really well just to get on the pitch and play, but he feels a lot better now. "Aaron McEneff had a scan and we're just waiting on the results and hopefully it's not too bad. He came out early on Sunday, he didn't feel anything major happened. He felt some tightness, which is always a good sign when you come off early enough." Last season's journey to the final knockout stages of the Confernce League gave Shamrock Rovers a taste of the big time. They're hungry for more. "We enjoyed Sunday, as it's important to enjoy those moments, those games and winning them," Bradley added. "But then on Monday morning, the full focus turned to Ballkani. That's what we do with this team, and this club, and we're well used to doing that.

Stephen Kenny would be happy to leave it late against Besiktas
St Patrick's Athletic manager Stephen Kenny won't be too concerned if his side don't score early on in their UEFA Conference League qualifier against Besiktas at Tallaght Stadium tonight. The Saints welcome the Turkish giants for the first of their two-legged tie in the third-round qualifiers, having already dug out some big results thanks to late European goals. Half of the goals scored by St Pat's in the Conference League this season have come in injury-time, with all three of their goals in the last round against Estonian side Kalju arriving after the clock had ticked past 90. For Kenny, that is sure sign of his side's never-say-die attitude and he's hoping that they can repeat the trick tonight against Besiktas. Speaking to RTÉ Sport, he said: "We had a barren period in the middle of the season but then in the European games we've had Aideen Keena, Chris Forester and Joe Redmond all score late. "[In Europe] we've had goals in the 81st minute, 90th minute, 91st and 93rd minute. Those are good traits, you can't underestimate the value of it and the determination to keep going. "When you get your rewards you feel the next match you will again. Those things can help players." St Pat's may well need that help given the step-up in the opposition they face. "From our point of view, we have very little time to prepare because we obviously has 120 minutes on Thursday and then we played in Waterford on Sunday. "That was a quick turnaround for us, so we'll just dust ourselves down and get ready for the game. "We're excited for it and we want to do well. It's difficult to win over two legs but we must give ourselves every opportunity. "This is a different challenge, they have formidable attacking players, they're physically strong. We've got to make sure that we establish some kind of control in the game and that we have belief in ourselves. "We know that we have speed in the team and that we can add that attacking threat. "Obviously Besiktas have so many international players and they're a formidable team, we don't but we have a lot of emerging players who are making a name for themselves in their career.
