How I'd Transform $7,000 Into a Reliable Stream of Passive Income

Lend me $7,000 and I'll pay you back $42 a month, forever. And if we're lucky, that original $7,000 might even grow over time. Sounds like a scam, right? But it's not. It's actually something that's very achievable inside a Tax-Free Savings Account (TFSA) if you pick the right investment.
One fund that fits the bill is the Canoe EIT Income Fund (). Here's why it could be a strong candidate for turning a lump sum into steady, tax-free monthly income.
EIT.UN is a closed-end fund (CEF) that gives you access to a professionally managed portfolio of about 50% U.S. and 50% Canadian stocks. It doesn't follow a benchmark index. Instead, managers actively pick companies with the goal of generating consistent income and capital appreciation.
Like many CEFs, EIT.UN trades on the exchange, which means its share price can differ from its net asset value (NAV). When it's priced above NAV, it trades at a premium; when it's below, it trades at a discount. This difference can offer opportunity depending on when you buy.
EIT.UN also uses light leverage of around 1.2 times to enhance both yield and returns. That means for every $100 of investor capital, the fund controls about $120 worth of investments. This modest borrowing boosts income but also amplifies volatility, so it's important to understand it's not risk-free.
Despite that, its long-term track record is solid. Over the last 10 years, if you reinvested all monthly distributions, you would have earned a 10.9% annualized return, an impressive result for an income-focused fund.
First, with $7,000 in your TFSA, and EIT.UN trading at $16.43 per share, you could buy approximately: $7,000 ÷ $16.43 ≈ 426 shares.
Each share pays a $0.10 monthly distribution, which has remained steady for more than a decade. That means every month, you'd earn: 426 × $0.10 = $42.60.
Because the TFSA is tax-free, you keep every penny – no income tax, no withholding tax, no paperwork. That's $511.20 per year in passive income.
And if you choose to reinvest those distributions, you'll slowly build more shares, which in turn generate more income each month, kicking off a powerful compounding effect over time.

US grid operator leverages AI to speed power plant connections

The grid operator for the Great Plains region on Thursday announced an agreement with Japanese conglomerate Hitachi that aims to use artificial intelligence to speed up the rate at which new power projects can come online. The Southwest Power Pool, which runs the high-voltage grid across parts of 14 states from Texas to the Canadian border, aims to slash the time it takes to connect new power projects to by as much as 80 percent. Like other regions of the country, SPP is grappling with convergence of trends that's putting pressure on the power industry. Aging fossil fuel plants are being retired at a faster rate than new renewable and natural-gas-fired projects can come online. And demand is surging because of new manufacturing plants, data centers and electrification of cars and space heating and extreme weather is showing up more frequently. Advertisement Nationally, data centers are projected to consume as much as 12 percent of the nation's electricity by 2028 — almost triple the share a couple years ago, according to the Energy Department. SPP said without action, its reserve margins — a buffer to guard against outages when power plants trip offline — could drop to 5 percent in 2029 from 24 percent in 2023, raising the possibility of power shortages during emergencies.

CAE announces renewal of normal course issuer bid

MONTREAL, June 6, 2025 /CNW/ - (NYSE: CAE) (TSX: CAE) – CAE Inc. ("CAE") today announced that it has received regulatory approval to renew its normal course issuer bid ("NCIB") to purchase, for cancellation, up to 16,019,294 of its common shares commencing June 10, 2025 and ending June 9, 2026. The maximum number of common shares that may be repurchased under the program represents approximately five percent (5%) of the issued and outstanding common shares of CAE. The actual number of common shares purchased under the NCIB, the timing of purchases and the price at which the common shares are bought will depend upon management discretion based on factors such as market conditions. Purchases under the NCIB will be made through the facilities of the Toronto Stock Exchange ("TSX") in accordance with the TSX's applicable policies or the facilities of the New York Stock Exchange ("NYSE") in compliance with applicable NYSE rules and policies and U.S. laws, or in such other manner as may be permitted under applicable stock exchange rules and applicable securities laws, including through alternative Canadian and US trading platforms and privately-negotiated, off-exchange block purchases. In the case of off-exchange block purchases, purchases will be at a discount to the prevailing market price in accordance with and subject to the terms of applicable exemptive relief. RBC Dominion Securities Inc. ("RBC") has agreed to act as CAE's designated broker to make purchases of common shares pursuant to the NCIB. CAE has also entered into an automatic repurchase plan agreement ("ARPA") with RBC allowing it to purchase common shares under the NCIB when CAE would ordinarily not be permitted to purchase shares due to regulatory restrictions and customary self-imposed black-out periods. Before entering a black-out period, CAE may, but is not required to, instruct RBC to make purchases under the NCIB during such a period based on parameters set by CAE prior to the black-out period in accordance with the ARPA, TSX rules and applicable securities laws. All purchases made under the ARPA are included in computing the number of common shares purchased under the NCIB. The ARPA has been pre-cleared by the TSX and will be implemented and effective June 10, 2025, and will terminate on the earliest of the date on which: (i) the repurchase limit on the NCIB has been reached; (ii) the NCIB expires; (iii) CAE terminates the ARPA in accordance with its terms; and (iv) RBC terminates the ARPA in accordance with its terms. The ARPA constitutes an "automatic securities purchase plan" under applicable Canadian securities laws. The price CAE will pay for any common shares will be the market price at the time of acquisition, plus brokerage fees. During the period that the NCIB is outstanding, CAE does not intend to make purchases of its common shares other than by means of open market transactions or such other means as may be permitted or approved by any applicable securities regulator. The average daily trading volume of CAE's common shares through the facilities of the TSX over the last six completed calendar months was 733,845 ("ADTV"). Accordingly, under the TSX rules and policies, CAE will be entitled on any trading day to purchase up to 25% of the ADTV, which totals 183,461 common shares, for the next 12-month period of the NCIB. In excess of the daily repurchase limit, CAE may make, once per week, a block purchase (as such term is defined in the TSX Company Manual) of common shares not owned directly or indirectly by any insiders, which may exceed such daily limit, in accordance with the TSX rules. As of May 30, 2025, CAE had 320,385,889 common shares issued and outstanding. All common shares purchased pursuant to the NCIB will be cancelled. Under the normal course issuer bid which began on May 30, 2024, and which expired on May 29, 2025, CAE received approval from the TSX to purchase up to 15,932,187 common shares. As at May 29, 2025, CAE had purchased a total of 856,230 common shares thereunder, at a volume weighted average price of $24.85 per common share, for a total consideration of $21.3 million. Such purchases were effected through the facilities of the TSX and Canadian alternative trading systems. The NCIB is being established as part of CAE's capital allocation strategy. The Board of Directors of CAE believes that any purchases made under the NCIB will be in the best interest of CAE and that such purchases will constitute a desirable use of funds that should enhance shareholder value.
