India's bid to host the 2036 Olympics is in the 'Continuous Dialogue' phase with the International Olympic Committee 's Future Host Commission, Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya told the Lok Sabha on Monday.In response to a query from Aam Aadmi Party's MP from Sangrur, Gurmeet Singh Meet Hayer, Mandaviya said the entire bidding process is being handled by the Indian Olympic Association (IOA)."IOA has submitted a letter of intent to IOC. The bid is now in the 'Continuous Dialogue' phase with the Future Host Commission of IOC," the Minister stated in the lower house.The Minister, however, did not respond to Hayer's specific query of whether India is bidding to host the Olympics across multiple venues. Hayer asked if the proposed plan includes Hockey in Bhubaneswar, Rowing in Bhopal, Canoeing/Kayaking in Pune and Cricket in Mumbai."Bidding to host the Olympic Games in India is the responsibility of the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) and allotment of hosting rights for the Olympics is done by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) through a detailed host selection process," Mandaviya stated.Although a host city has not been proposed by India officially, the Gujarat government has been at the forefront and its Sports Minister Harsh Sanghavi was part of an Indian delegation that visited IOC headquarters in Lausanne to discuss the bid last month.The 'Continuous Dialogue' phase involves a feasibility assessment by the IOC of the interested party's preparedness. However, as of now, the host selection process has been "paused" by new IOC President Kirsty Coventry.Coventry, an Olympic gold-winning former swimmer who is the first woman and the first African President of the IOC, said the consensus among the members, during her maiden Executive Board meeting in June, was to reassess the process.Earlier, a decision on India's bid was expected next year. India is also facing competition from the likes of Qatar and Turkey, who are also in the 2036 race."There was an overwhelming support from the IOC members for a pause to be done and a review of the future host election process and we will be setting up a working group to look into this," the 41-year-old Coventry had said in July.Coventry said the executive board members felt that the experience of already decided future hosts -- Los Angles (2028 Summer Games), Brisbane (2032 Summer Games), French Alps (2030 Winter Games) -- need to be studied before proceeding on future proposals.India's poor record in doping is an issue for the IOC, which has sought corrective measures by the IOA. The IOA has set up a panel to address doping in Indian sports after being rebuked by the IOC.Mandaviya also faced a question on the pitiable state of Indian football. While the national men's team has been hurtling from one setback to another, domestic football is also in doldrums after the top-tier Indian Super League was placed on hold due to technical issues.Congress' Adoor Prakash, who represents the Attingal constituency in Kerala, asked whether the Government "noted the declining situation of Indian football" and that the team has slipped to the lowest FIFA ranking in the last nine years.He also sought a lowdown on the measures being undertaken to revive the sport.The minister placed the onus on the All India Football Federation and blamed the poor rankings on the "dynamic" of the process to determine them."Rankings of football teams are dynamic and influenced by match results, strength of opposition, and frequency of matches."The Sports Authority of India (SAI), an autonomous body under the aegis of the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, regularly engages with the AIFF to review the performance and overall development of the sport and provides its advice accordingly," he stated."At present, a total of 500 athletes are being trained in football discipline," he added.

NEW DELHI: Amid relentless attacks by Congress leader Rahul Gandhi over alleged voter data fudging, the Election Commission on Thursday said instead of creating false narrative by using "dirty phrases" like 'vote chori', proof should be given. In a statement, the EC said the law for "one person one vote" is already been in existence since the first elections in 1951-1952. "If anyone has any proof of any person actually voting twice in any election, it should be shared with ECI with a written affidavit rather than colouring all the electors of India as 'chor' without any proof," it said. The poll authority said that by trying to create a false narrative by using "dirty phrases" like "vote chori" for Indian electors, is not only a direct attack on the crores of Indian electors but also an assault on the integrity of lakhs of election staff. Gandhi, the Leader of the Opposition in Lok Sabha, last week cited data to allege that more than one lakh votes were 'stolen' in the Mahadevpura assembly constituency of Bengaluru Central Lok Sabha in the 2024 elections, resulting in the defeat of a Congress candidate. The Election Commission had directed Gandhi to give a written declaration on his claims.

16 BSF personnel awarded gallantry medals for Operation Sindoor
Sixteen Border Security Force (BSF) personnel have been awarded gallantry medals for their exceptional bravery during Operation Sindoor, in which they shot down enemy drones, rescued injured comrades, supplied ammunition under fire, destroyed Pakistani posts and surveillance equipment along the border. Among the awardees are five personnel deployed at the sensitive Kharkhola border outpost in Jammu. According to the citation, six personnel—Assistant Commandant Abhishek Srivastav, Head Constable Brij Mohan Singh, and Constables Bhupendra Bajpai, Rajan Kumar, Basavaraja Shivappa Sunkada, and Depeswar Barman—displayed exemplary courage under direct enemy assault. After the Indian Army launched Operation Sindoor, Pakistani forces positioned barely 200 meters from the Kharkhola post initiated heavy shelling using flat and high-trajectory weapons, followed by a drone attack. 'In the early hours of May 10, 2025, multiple Pakistani drones were spotted in the area. Upon hearing the humming sound, the troops took defensive positions. Under the command of Sub-Inspector Mohd Imtiyaz, they successfully neutralised one drone. However, a mortar shell—likely dropped by another drone—exploded just outside their bunker, causing serious injuries to Head Constable Brij Mohan Singh and four constables,' the citation stated. Assistant Commandant Srivastav, a young probationary officer, rushed to their aid and successfully evacuated them under intense enemy fire. The BSF has also named a post in Jammu under the name of Sub-Inspector Imitiyaz, who was killed in action that morning. Apart from Singh, another constable, Deepak Chimngakham, was also killed in action at the border during the Indo-Pak hostilities. Another medal recipient, assistant sub-inspector Udai Vir Singh, was posted at the Jabowal border outpost in the Jammu sector when it came under heavy assault from Pakistani forces. 'Amid intense enemy fire, ASI Singh destroyed a Pakistani surveillance camera, denying them real-time monitoring of Indian positions. Even after sustaining a life-threatening shrapnel wound to his upper lip from heavy machine gun fire, he refused evacuation and continued to engage the enemy, ultimately neutralising their HMG nest,' the citation read. 'His actions ensured uninterrupted domination by Indian forces and inspired fellow troops.' Assistant Sub-Inspector Rajappa B.T. and Constable Manohar Xalxo were also honoured for their bravery in resupplying ammunition to frontline troops at Karotana Khurd, Karotana Forward, and Suchetagarh border outposts. These posts had come under intense 82mm mortar and machine gun fire from Pakistan. 'On May 10 at 0740 hrs, BOP Karotana Khurd reported a critical shortage of AGS ammunition. ASI Rajappa and CT Xalxo were tasked with the replenishment mission. While executing it, a mortar shell exploded near their magazine. ASI Rajappa sustained fatal splinter injuries, and CT Xalxo was wounded in his right hand. Despite their injuries, both completed the mission successfully,' the citation stated. Assistant Commandant Alok Negi was recognised for leading his troops during a prolonged engagement at the forward defence line at Mukhyari between May 7 and 10. His leadership ensured operational dominance and sustained retaliatory strikes for over 48 hours, using mortars and other heavy weapons. Apart from securing the border, BSF troops during Operation Sindoor bombed terror launchpads such as Looni and Dhandhar in Pakistan, destroyed posts of Pakistan Rangers, and also neutralised terrorists infiltrating into India using cover fire by Pak Rangers. In an official statement, the BSF said, 'This Independence Day, 16 brave Seema Praharis are being awarded Gallantry Medals for their conspicuous bravery and unmatched valour. Their resolute and steadfast actions during Operation Sindoor are a testament to the nation's faith and trust reposed in India's First Line of Defence.' In response to India's Operation Sindoor, Pakistan launched drones and loitering munitions against Indian military installations and civilian infrastructure, but failed to inflict any damage as the threats were thwarted by India's robust multi-layered air defence network.

World Will Listen To Us If We Become Strong In All Sectors: Nitin Gadkari
Nagpur: Union minister Nitin Gadkari on Thursday pitched for making India a superpower and " vishwaguru", saying the world would certainly listen to India if it becomes strong in every sector. The Road Transport and Highways Minister was addressing a gathering at a programme to mark 'Akhand Bharat Sankalp Din' organised by the Rashtra Nirman Samiti (social organisation) in Nagpur. "We recall this day because on this day in 1947, the country was divided into two - India and Pakistan. We all, as a mission, accept that our country's partition was unnatural, and one day, our country will become ' akhand ' (unified). This is the resolve we take today in this programme," he said. Mr Gadkari praised India's unity in diversity and also lauded the country's armed forces. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has resolved to make India a 5 trillion-dollar economy, the third-largest economy in the world, as well as " atmanirbhar" and " vishwaguru", he noted, adding all these resolutions will be achieved with the efforts of every Indian. "If we become strong in every sector, then certainly the world will listen to us. Those who are strong in economics, defence, science and technology and those who are progressing in agriculture and business, and a country whose citizens are patriots and cultured, that country can only become vishwaguru," he said. Mr Gadkari praised the Rashtra Nirman Samiti for invoking the thought of "Akhand Bharat" among the people. "When we are taking the resolution for 'Akhand Bharat' today, we should also resolve to make a superpower country which is progressive, prosperous and powerful," he said. Mr Gadkari also raised concerns over road accidents, and underlined the importance of creating awareness among the youth about following the road safety rules.
