ICC-ES evaluates SmartCare CureAssure for compliance with Dubai Building Code and green construction standards
This achievement marks a significant milestone in sustainable construction for the region, as SmartCare CureAssure becomes the first product of its kind to be evaluated in compliance with the Dubai Building Code (DBC), resulting in its official approval by Dubai Municipality in accordance with ICC-ES Acceptance Criteria AC564 for internal curing concrete admixtures.
In a region where concrete construction dominates - and where embodied carbon and resource consumption remain critical challenges - SmartCare CureAssure provides a tangible solution. The system not only enhances strength and durability, but also significantly reduces water usage, supporting the region's broader environmental and sustainability goals.
Mohamed Amer, Managing Director of ICC MENA, stated: " We are proud to support the advancement of sustainable and resilient construction practices through the issuance of this ESR. By validating innovative systems such as SmartCare CureAssure against rigorous code requirements, ICC-ES is helping pave the way for a safer, more efficient, and environmentally responsible construction future - one that aligns with the GCC's long-term development goals."
This milestone sets a strong foundation for the future adoption of sustainable and innovative building systems across the region. By demonstrating a clear, credible pathway for emerging technologies to meet rigorous code compliance through third-party technical validation, ICC-ES helps unlock new opportunities for greener construction methods. Such initiatives empower manufacturers, developers, and regulators alike to embrace out of the box solutions that enhance building resilience, environmental performance, and resource efficiency, ultimately contributing to a more sustainable built environment in the GCC and beyond.
Commenting on this success, Joseph Eapen, CEO of Asian Paints International Private Ltd, stated: "This achievement reflects our commitment to delivering high-performance, sustainable solutions for the construction sector. Having ICC-ES independently verify the performance of our system for compliance with the DBC reinforces our dedication to innovation and environmental stewardship."
This milestone highlights ICC-ES's continued support in evaluating innovative systems that meet the evolving demands of building safety, sustainability, and performance in the MENA region and beyond. ESRs provide technical validation for innovative materials and systems while unlocking market access for global manufacturers. Through ICC-ES, we've supported companies in navigating this process efficiently, reducing risk while staying aligned with local code requirements.

EGA, ENEC deliver first aluminium produced with carbon-free nuclear energy
Emirates Global Aluminium (EGA) and Emirates Nuclear Energy Company (ENEC) today announced the UAE's first delivery of low-carbon aluminium using electricity generated at Barakah Nuclear Energy Plant. EGA is marketing this type of low-carbon aluminium under the product brand MinimAL. The metal will be supplied to CANEX Aluminum, Egypt's leading aluminium downstream producer. EGA's new product positions the UAE as a reliable supplier of low-carbon industrial materials to global markets and expands EGA's low-carbon metal portfolio for our local and global customers. Mohamed Al Hammadi, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of ENEC, said, 'This milestone shows how nuclear energy is boosting national energy security and enabling the UAE's industrial decarbonisation in parallel, reliably powering energy-intensive sectors like aluminium production with clean electricity 24/7. Through the abundant electricity generated at Barakah, we have unlocked the significant, proven and long-term benefits of nuclear energy to power the UAE's low-carbon economy for decades to come.' Abdulnasser Bin Kalban, Chief Executive Officer of EGA, said, 'Global demand for low carbon aluminium is expected to triple by 2040, and EGA aims to play an important role in this growth. MinimAL is our latest low-carbon product, made possible through the UAE's investment in nuclear power generation. We are glad to be working with ENEC to supply more low carbon aluminium to the world.' Mutassem Daaboul, Managing Director of CANEX Aluminum, said, 'At CANEX, we believe true sustainability is built into every layer of production - from the raw material to the final product. Our upcycling model already transforms waste into value-added products. Now, with MinimAL, we are taking another step forward by reducing embedded emissions at the very beginning of our process.' The clean electricity is certified through the UAE's Clean Energy Certification programme using International REC Standard (I-REC) protocols to ensure traceability and credibility. The power is supplied through Emirates Water and Electricity Company (EWEC) via the national grid. The Barakah plant generates 40 terawatt-hours of clean electricity annually, which is around 25 per cent of the UAE's electricity needs, and equivalent to the annual total power demand of Switzerland. Carbon-free electricity from Barakah avoids 22.4 million tons of carbon emissions each year, equivalent to removing 4.8 million cars from the road. EGA was the first company globally to produce aluminium using solar power, with 80 thousand tonnes of CelestiAL made in 2024. EGA also produces recycled aluminium, marketed under the product brand RevivAL, at its plants in the United States and Germany. In the UAE, EGA is building the UAE's largest aluminium recycling plant at Al Taweelah. The facility is expected to start production in the first half of 2026.

DP World expands vehicle capacity at Jebel Ali to meet surging demand
RoRo volumes up 28% in H1 2025 as Dubai cements role as global trade hub Dubai, UAE: DP World has significantly expanded its automotive logistics capacity to meet growing demand at Jebel Ali Port, with the launch of a new 2.6 million square foot vehicle storage yard at Terminal 4. The upgrade adds 13,000 CEUs (car equivalent units), raising the port's total storage capacity to 75,000 CEUs, and further cements Dubai's position as the Middle East's leading hub for automotive trade. The expansion includes an 800-metre quay that can handle up to three roll-on/roll-off (RoRo) vessels simultaneously. By reallocating RoRo operations from Terminal 1 to the new purpose-built zone at Terminal 4, DP World is improving berth availability, speeding up turnaround times and expanding port space to meet growing customer demand and absorb future flows. Abdulla Bin Damithan, CEO and Managing Director, DP World GCC, said: 'Dubai is scaling up its role as a global automotive trade hub and this expansion gives car manufacturers, dealers, and logistics providers faster, more reliable access to key markets across the Middle East, Africa, and beyond.' Shahab Al Jassmi, SVP - Commercial, Ports and Terminals, DP World GCC, added: 'This is a customer focused investment. More yard space, quicker service and reliable berth availability are all designed to help the automotive supply chain grow.' The announcement comes amid strong growth in vehicle volumes. In the first half of 2025, Jebel Ali handled 545,000 vehicles at the port, up 28% year-on-year. Imports accounted for 65% of the total, primarily from China, Japan, Thailand, India and South Korea. The expansion is part of DP World's broader automotive strategy, which includes plans for a 20 million sqft advanced car market in Dubai, set to be the largest in the world. Together, these projects support Dubai's D33 agenda to double its economy by 2033 and become a global leader in smart logistics.
