Alibaba Cloud expands AI footprint in Asia with new data centres in Malaysia, Philippines

Alibaba Cloud, the cloud computing services and artificial intelligence (AI) arm of
Alibaba Group Holding, unveiled plans to launch new data centres in Malaysia and the Philippines, as it expands infrastructure investments to meet the growing demand for AI in the region.
In a statement on Tuesday marking a decade of operations in Singapore, Alibaba Cloud said it had launched its third data centre in Malaysia, and planned to open a second one in the Philippines in October this year. The latest investments follow similar plans in Thailand, Mexico and
South Korea earlier this year.
Alibaba is betting heavily on AI, with a commitment to invest at least US$53 billion on AI infrastructure over the next three years. Alibaba owns the South China Morning Post.
In its annual report released last month, Alibaba said it would help 'customers and business partners harness the power of digital technology, AI and cloud infrastructure to optimise operations, unlock new opportunities and drive innovation'.

Could Indonesia have potential role in Johor-Singapore Special Economic Zone? ‘Three is better than two'

Singapore and Malaysia are in talks with Indonesia to expand the Johor-Singapore Special Economic Zone (JS-SEZ), according to Singapore's Trade Minister Gan Kim Yong. Advertisement During the 9th Asean Conference on Thursday organised by Singapore Business Federation, Gan took part in a panel with Malaysian Deputy Trade Minister Liew Chin Tong and Indonesia's Deputy Investment Cooperation Minister Tirta Nugraha Mursitama. Gan mentioned that he met his counterparts from Malaysia and Indonesia last week to discuss bringing the Batam, Bintan and Karimun (BBK) Indonesian islands into the initiative to strengthen the Singapore-Johor-Riau (Sijori) Growth Triangle. So two is better than one, and three is actually better than two,' said Gan, who is also Singapore's deputy prime minister.

Alibaba's open-source AI model shines as Qwen-based agentic framework tops global ranking

Jointly developed by open-source initiative Agentica and San Francisco-based start-up Together AI, DeepSWE was trained on the Qwen3-32B large language model (LLM) – part of Alibaba Cloud's third-generation family of AI models. It topped the leaderboard of the latest SWEBench-Verified test, scoring 59 per cent accuracy against other so-called open-weight models like DeepSeek 's V3-0324, the developers said in a blog post on Wednesday. Agentic frameworks are software platforms that provide the structure, tools and functionalities to build, deploy and manage AI agents. They enable AI agents to collaborate, make decisions and automate complex tasks. AI agents, such as Chinese start-up Butterfly Effect's Manus , are software programs that are capable of autonomously performing tasks on behalf of a user or another system. Essentially, these agents create a plan of specific tasks and subtasks to complete a goal using available resources. DeepSWE marks the latest example of Hangzhou -based Alibaba's growing leadership position in the global open-source community. Alibaba owns the South China Morning Post. The open-source approach gives public access to a program's source code, allowing third-party software developers to modify or share its design, fix broken links or scale up its capabilities.

Hang Seng Index hit by tech jitters

Hang Seng Index hit by tech jitters The Hang Seng Index ended 151.47 points, or 0.63 percent, down at 24,069.94. File photo: AFP Hong Kong shares closed down on Thursday, led by tech stocks, as investors fretted that intensifying competition among e-commerce giants could squeeze profit margins. The benchmark Hang Seng Index ended down 151.47 points, or 0.63 percent, at 24,069.94. The Hang Seng China Enterprises Index fell 0.88 percent to end at 8,648.44 while the Hang Seng Tech Index slid 0.67 percent to end at 5,233.71. E-commerce giant Alibaba shares fell nearly 3 percent, leading declines in Hong Kong, after the company announced a 50-billion-yuan subsidy programme to merchants and customers on Wednesday. "Alibaba's plan to offer US$7 billion of subsidies for food delivery and online retail implies competition is heating up again among China e-commerce companies," said UBS analysts. Shares of on-demand delivery giant Meituan dropped 2.5 percent while fell 2.1 percent. Biotech stocks, however, rose, with Ascentage up 6.2 percent. Mainland stocks closed higher, with the benchmark Shanghai Composite Index up 0.18 percent to 3,461.15 and the Shenzhen Component Index 1.17 percent higher at 10,534.58. The ChiNext Index, tracking China's Nasdaq-style board of growth enterprises, gained 1.9 percent to close at 2,164.09. China's services activity expanded at the slowest pace in nine months in June, as demand weakened and new export orders declined amid a fragile trade truce with the United States, a private sector survey showed on Thursday. China's semiconductor shares were little moved after US chip design software developers said they have received notices lifting restrictions on exports to China. China is assessing the trade deal between the United States and Vietnam and will safeguard its own rights and interests if needed, a spokesperson for the Commerce Ministry said on Thursday. Healthcare shares led gains onshore, up 1.2 percent, as Beijing ramped up policy support for the country's innovative drugs. (Reuters/Xinhua)
