Nagpur: Development without ecology is not development it is devastation in disguise, remarked, environmentalist and member of the State Board for Wildlife Shrikant Tekade while addressing a
World Environment Day
programme organised by RTO Nagpur in collaboration with the Institute of Environment, Ecology, Health & Management (IEEHM).
Speaking on this year's theme 'Beat Plastic Pollution and Deforestation', Tekade painted a grim picture of plastic misuse and its growing impact on both urban and forest ecosystems. He pointed out that Nagpur generates over 1,100 tonnes of municipal waste daily, of which nearly 90 tonnes is plastic, much of it non-recyclable. He cited disturbing examples of plastic being found in the stomachs of cows and wildlife deaths due to plastic ingestion.
"We have turned our cities into plastic jungles," he said, urging people to change their habits before nature reaches a point of no return.
He also warned against burning plastic, which emits harmful toxins linked to cancer and respiratory diseases. On air pollution, Tekade shared a sobering statistic over 12 lakh deaths occur annually in India due to air pollution. He also stressed the importance of trees, calling them 'silent soldiers' that provide oxygen and preserve ecological balance.

According to the World Bank's global poverty update, from 2011-12 to 2022-23, the number of people living under extreme poverty in India dipped from 344.47 million to 75.24 million. This means that approximately 269 million people came out of poverty during this time period. The World Bank's latest assessment reveals this substantial poverty reduction despite implementing a stricter measurement criteria, which includes raising the poverty benchmark to $3 daily consumption from the previous $2.15, whilst incorporating the 2021 Purchasing Power Parities (PPPs). Five states - Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, Bihar, West Bengal and Madhya Pradesh - which previously had 65% of India's extreme poor in 2011-12, were responsible for two-thirds of the total reduction in extreme poverty by 2022-23. World Bank Poverty Estimates for India According to the previous $2.15 poverty threshold (calculated using 2017 prices), the proportion of Indians experiencing extreme poverty decreased to 2.3% in 2022-23, compared to 16.2% in 2011-12. This significant decline translated to a reduction in the number of people living in extreme poverty from 205.93 million in 2011-12 to 33.66 million in 2022-23. Women's police station gets a new look in just 69 days
Doddaballapur: Once functioning out of a cramped police quarters building originally meant for a single family, the women's police station of Bengaluru Rural district has now un-dergone a remarkable transformation. In just 69 days, the station has been fully renovated and was officially inaugurated on Thursday. Located within the premises of the Doddaballapur rural police station, the women's police station was previously operating out of a small residential unit — a setup that significantly affected police operations. There was limited space for receiving com-plaints, conducting counselling sessions, and interrogating suspects, which ham-pered the station's efficiency. The transformation began after Inspector M.B. Naveen Kumar took charge on March 13. With a vision to improve the work environment and public service, he initiated the renovation work by March 29. He was supported by police personnel Lokesh, Hev, and Sunil Godrale. The project was made possible through CSR funds and contributions from donors, resulting in a completely renovated station within just over two months. Remarkably, a legal aid and counselling centre was also estab-lished within just 7 days. On the occasion of World Environment Day, Bengaluru Rural SP C.K. Baba inau-gurated the newly renovated station. Speaking to the media, he praised Inspector Naveen Kumar and his team for their dedication and efficient execution of the ren-ovation. 'They have not only renovated the station but also set up a special legal support centre. I extend my congratulations to them,' he said. SP Baba further shared plans for additional facilities to better serve the public, in-cluding setting up a library and a dedicated playroom for children visiting the station with their families.
