Carson Hocevar draws the ire of Zane Smith and FRM crew chief

Yahoo12 hours ago
As he tried to fight back from a mid-race incident, Carson Hocevar got loose underneath Zane Smith and sent the Front Row Motorsports driver spinning into the outside wall.
However, things did not end there as the damaged No. 38 Ford of Smith appeared to try and get payback later in the race, taking a swipe at the No. 77 and missing. Hocevar even reacted to it on the radio saying, "nice try."
Hocevar rebounded to finish eighth at Iowa Speedway, while Smith finished several laps down in 36th.
'It was just another work of art from [team owner] Jeff Dickerson, wanting us to fight through adversity and be able to come out with a good result," said Hocevar as he reflected on the race. "That's what he's preached and that's what we've been focusing on. We were turned around at one point and just struggling to go anywhere. We were just able to reset and regroup. Luke [Lambert, crew chief] did a really good job for this No. 77 Chevrolet team to at least put something on the board and be able to go into next weekend with a little momentum with two top-10s in a row.'
Post-race confrontation
While he didn't directly address the incident with Smith in the above quotes, the opposing FRM team was eager to address it with him. Ryan Bergenty, who works as the crew chief for the No. 38, confronted Hocevar after the race in a heated conversation. Frontstretch.com reporter Stephen Stumpf even caught the beginning of the tense interaction on video.
Hocevar has been involved in several run-ins this year, including an infamous multi-week feud with Ricky Stenhouse Jr., as well as various other drivers throughout the field. The 22-year-old is having an impressive season with flashes speed, but Smith is just the latest of many enemies he has made along the way.

60-Year-Old Racer Dies Attempting Land Speed Record at Bonneville Salt Flats

The latest car news, reviews, and features. Chris Raschke of the Speed Demon Racing Team died Sunday while attempting to break a land speed record at the annual Bonneville Salt Flats Speed Week in Utah. Reports claim the veteran racer lost control of his vehicle during the attempt. But no authorities—nor the Speed Demon crew—have specified if this was caused by a mechanical failure, driver error, or some environmental circumstance, as can often be the case in the Salt Flats. Raschke was reportedly assisted by medical professionals following the crash, but ultimately succumbed to his injuries. Event organizers, the Southern California Timing Association, confirmed his passing Sunday afternoon. The video below, posted by the Adventure Guy channel on YouTube, shows Raschke taking off in his new Speed Demon Streamliner the day before his fatal crash. 'At approximately 3:03 p.m. Mountain Time today, driver Chris Raschke. age 60, was attempting a speed record and lost control of his land speed vehicle at approximately the 2 1/2 mile,' said the SCTA in a press release. 'Chris was treated by medical professionals at the scene. Unfortunately, Chris passed away from his injuries.' According to reports, Raschke was 60 years old and had enjoyed a rich racing career in a variety of categories, from three-wheelers, stock cars, drag racing, and, of course, land speed machines. He was Ventura Raceway's first employee and eventually made a name for himself with Duttweiler Automotive, which built and ran drag-racing Buicks in the 1980s and 1990s, according to Primetimer . He eventually joined the Speed Demon team in the late '90s and worked with racing legend George Poteet, a land-speed racer and car collector from the Memphis area who drove 'over 400 mph more than 50 times,' according to the team. Poteet holds the current Bonneville Salt Flats land speed record at 470.733 mph, which he set back in 2020 at the wheel of the Chevy-powered Speed Demon 715 streamliner. Poteet died in July 2024 and was succeeded on the team by Raschke. The SCTA and Tooele County Sheriff's Office are investigating the crash and will release more details as they become available. Raschke leaves behind a wife and three children, and possibly grandchildren, though this was not specified in the announcement. Got a tip? Email us at tips@

SafeSport Center to offer free training courses this week

DENVER (AP) — The U.S. Center for SafeSport is offering free training this week to 500 people as part of International Safe Sport Day, which takes place Friday. The center's 'SafeSport Trained Course' is part of a series that teaches about recognizing factors that make athletes more vulnerable to abuse and knowing when and how to report abuse and misconduct. The Denver-based center was opened in 2017 to combat sex abuse in U.S. Olympic sports. It considers training among its core missions and receives a federal grant worth more than $2 million each year that is dedicated to courses that provide certification to coaches and other adults who oversee kids in youth sports. The free courses are being offered to people outside the Olympic and Paralympic movement who would otherwise need to purchase the course. Registration is open this week on a first-come, first-served basis.
