Residential schools in Karnataka did well in SSLC exams-1
Though all these schools have done well, Belagavi division topped the state with an average of 94.4%. Mysuru division stood second with 92.6%, and Bengaluru third with 90.6% in the overall performance. Kalaburagi division's is the lowest at with 87.9%.
P Mainvannan, principal secretary to the govt, social welfare department, had written letters to all schools on their better performance.
A source in the department told TOI that residential schools in the Belagavi division have been doing better for years now.
"There is the highest demand and competition to get a seat in residential schools in Kittur Karnataka regioin. However, there is less awareness about govt-run residential schools in the Kalyana Karnataka region," the source added.
According to the KREIS analysis, Udupi district of Mysuru divisions stood top with 99.4%; Haveri district 4th place with 97.8%, Gadag district 6th with 95.8%, Uttara Kannada district 9th with 95.4%, and Belagavi district 10th with 95.2% (of Belagavi division).

Only Vijayanagara 7th with 95.6% and Koppal 8th with 95.6% of Kalaburagi division secured a place in the top 10. Kalaburagi district, which is the divisional headquarters of Kalyana Karnataka region, scored only 77.1% with 30th place, and Bidar stood in the last 31st place with a 77.05% passing percentage.
Veerabhadra Simpi, former president, Kalaburagi district Kannada Sahitya Parishat, said it was mentioned in the Nanjundappa report itself that Kalyana Karnataka is deprived of an educational atmosphere.
"Even two decades after the submission of the report, issues like lack of facilities in schools persist. Moreover, awareness about govt-run residential schools is low. As a result, competition is also less, which led to lower results in exams," he said.
He also said elected representatives are just focusing on the construction of roads and other physical facilities, but their effort to enhance educational and cultural growth is very compared to other divisions.

10 women killed, 27 others injured as truck falls into ditch in near Pune
Pune: Ten women devotees were killed and 27 others, including two men and two children, injured when a pick-up truck ferrying them to Kundeshwar temple near Pait in Khed taluka, about 65 km from Pune, fell into a ditch around 1pm on Monday. Over 35 devotees had boarded the rear cargo bed of the pick-up truck at Papalwadi near Pait. Representative image Besides govt bodies, several private organizations are also going the extra mile when it comes to animal welfare, as was evident during the recent floods that swept across Balasore and its neighbouring districts and a Bhubaneswar-based organisation, in collaboration with Yuva Vikas Foundation, distributed over 36,000kg of emergency feed for 12,000 animals in the severely affected blocks of Baliapal and Bhograi. 'The situation was dire. Animals were confined in waterlogged shelters and were suffering from various illnesses, with no access to proper fodder or veterinary care. The challenge was amplified by three consecutive floods within two weeks, leaving people with no time to replenish fodder resources,' Jaihari A K, coordinator of Humane World for Animals India's disaster management team, said as he recalled the relief efforts. 'It was one of the worst floods the region had witnessed in recent times and we are happy that we could rescue the animals and take care of them.' Similarly, Chandrasekhar Dash and his team in Bhubaneswar have set up a rescue facility in Patiagarh, which is capable of housing 50 animals at a time. 'We have rescued over 1,000 animals in five years. Representative image In the quiet pre-dawn hours a few days ago, when most Bhubaneswar residents were still in deep slumber, the piercing siren of a fire tender broke the silence. The emergency? A cat trapped in an abandoned well in Nayapalli. It wasn't a typical fire emergency. However, for the Odisha Fire & Emergency Service (OFES), every life, human or animal, is precious, in line with the state govt's zero-casualty mission during any disaster or crisis. The successful rescue, which saw the cat emerge unharmed, is just one of thousands of animal rescues undertaken by OFES in recent years. According to official data, the department has saved about 69,980 stray animals and birds from various crisis situations in the past five years. The bulk of them, including cattle and dogs, were rescued from drains and manholes. During the same period, human rescues totalled 44,120. Official data also shows that between 2020 and 2025, 6,545 human fatalities and 10,426 animal deaths were recorded due to fires and other calamities. 'What's particularly noteworthy is that animal rescues have surpassed human rescues. The joy we feel after each successful rescue is immeasurable. That cat in Nayapalli could have perished without immediate intervention, but today it's back on its feet thanks to our team's prompt response,' Sarangi added. Animal rescue has shown a steady rise: 9,572 in 2020; 10,174 in 2021; 13,373 in 2022; 13,813 in 2023 and 14,576 in 2024. In just the first half of 2025, OFES has already carried out 8,469 operations. The Covid-19 pandemic proved to be a turning point. With streets deserted, stray animals faced unprecedented challenges. 'During the pandemic, we saw many cases of animals trapped in unusual places — construction sites, drainage systems and abandoned buildings. Our teams underwent specialised training to handle different species and situations. Today, they are better equipped than ever to respond to animal emergencies,' said DIG (fire service) Uma Shankar Dash. However, challenges remain. 'Urban development often leads to animals getting trapped in construction sites or falling into uncovered manholes and drains. We will request civic authorities to address these issues,' said a fire department official. OFES is now focusing on prevention alongside rescue. Plans are underway to introduce specialised animal ambulances, set up a dedicated rescue training centre and strengthen emergency reporting and response times. Awareness programmes in schools and communities on animal safety are also in the pipeline. The state govt has pledged to bolster the wing with modern equipment and training. The Centre recently approved Rs 201.1 crore for expanding and modernising the service, while the state set aside Rs 394 crore for upgrades. 'We want to introduce firefighting transformation programmes so our personnel can handle much more than just flames. They will choose their areas of specialisation from 13 domains,' Sarangi said.
