Nascar driver Connor Zilisch breaks collarbone while celebrating latest victory

By Thomas Schlachter , CNN Connor Zilisch, the Nascar Xfinity Series points leader, has picked up another win but his celebrations quickly came to an unexpected end when he broke his collarbone slipping off his car. The 19-year-old driver was climbing onto the roof of his No. 88 Chevrolet car to celebrate his latest victory at Watkins Glen International in New York on Saturday (local time) but as he attempted to move, his left foot apparently got caught on the window netting. Zilisch then tumbled awkwardly and took a hard fall onto Victory Lane. Connor Zilisch slips and falls off his car after winning the NASCAR Xfinity Series' latest race. The driver was taken to the trackside medical centre and transported to a local hospital in an ambulance for further evaluation. Zilisch later shared news of his injuries on X, formerly known as Twitter. "Thank you everybody for reaching out today. I'm out of the hospital and getting better already," Zilisch posted Saturday evening. "Thankfully, CT scans for my head are clear, I just have a broken collarbone. Thankful for all the medics for quick attention and grateful it wasn't any worse." Zilisch leads the NASCAR Xfinity Series with 823 points - seven points clear of Justin Allgaier in second. Zilisch has won a series-leading six races this season. - CNN

Football: Plenty to play for in Auckland FC clash with A-League hopefuls

Auckland FC's Guillermo May will face a different challenge against South Melbourne in the Australia Cup. Photo: Mark Evans / Auckland FC's Australia Cup clash with South Melbourne on Wednesday takes on a different tone given the current state of the A-League. With Western United having their A-League licence revoked last week for financial reasons, pending appeal, South Melbourne will have even more motivation to knock over an A-League opponent. South Melbourne have been vying for a place in the A-League for years. The club has had a bids for an A-League licence turned down more than once - most recently 2018, when they lost out to Western United - and despite currently contesting the National Premier Leagues Victoria, they have ambitions of playing in a different competition. Western United are on the brink of expulsion from the A-League. Photo: Andrew Cornaga/ Based in Albert Park, South Melbourne is one of 24 clubs to register an interest in playing in the Oceania Football Confederation (OFC) Professional League and is also part of the Australian Championship, a second-tier national competition kicking off in October. Auckland FC will be South Melbourne's third A-League opponent in the Australia Cup in 12 months. Last year South Melbourne defeated Wellington Phoenix 1-0 in the round of 32, before falling to Macarthur FC 1-0 in the semifinals. South Melbourne head into the game against Auckland with a short turnaround, after winning the Dockerty Cup final on Saturday. Auckland coach Steve Corica has done his homework on them. "Normally, the Melbourne teams are quite tough. They're good teams, I've seen that in the past, so we treat them with respect. "[South Melbourne] are a big club, so it's going to be another tough test for us and a good challenge as well. They're a good team, they started off very slowly this season, but they've changed coaches and they've become a lot stronger since the new coach has come in. "We've just got to turn up and make sure we're fully ready for that opportunity, and hopefully we get through." If Auckland FC beat South Melbourne, they will play a quarterfinal tie against either Sydney United 58 or A-League rivals Sydney FC. Wellington Phoenix play Nunawading City on Sunday for a place in the quarterfinals of the Australia Cup. Nunawading City are the lowest-ranked team remaining in the Cup. They play in VPL 2, the third division of men's football in Victoria. Wellington Phoenix coach Giancarlo Italiano said his side were not thinking it would be an "easy game". "They're going to be pumped for the game. The fact is, if they get a goal early or we get a player sent off, it changes the dynamic. "Cup competition always throws up upsets, so that's something we have to be mindful of." Fox carded a one-over par 71 in the second round of the St Jude tournament in Memphis, after a 72 in the first round. He is in a tie for 61st in the 69-player field, 16 strokes behind Englishman Tommy Fleetwood who is chasing his first PGA Tour win. Fox had a bad start, opening with a double bogey. He birdied the third, but two bogeys set him back, before three birdies and a bogey on his closing nine. Fox, who was ranked 32nd in the FedEx Cup standings heading in this tournament, will be looking for rapid improvement in the final two rounds as he looks to make the top 50 for the second playoff tournament next week. Fleetwood carded a 64 in his second round to be 13-under for the tournament, four strokes ahead of Collin Morikawa, Akshay Bhatia and Justin Rose, who was one of 21 players still to complete the second round after play was stopped because of lightning. Rose has two holes to play. World number one player Scottie Scheffler hit 66 to sit at seven-under. Meanwhile, in the PGA Champions seniors tour Boeing Classic in Washington state, Alker is in a tie for fourth pace, just two strokes behind joint leaders, Jerry Kelly and Matthew Gogel, after the first round. Alker started with an eagle on the first hole before firing a five-under 67. He sits third on the Charles Schwab Cup season standings, behind Miguel Angel Jiminez and Padraig Harrington. The Kiwi won the cup in 2022 and 2024. Sign up for Ngā Pitopito Kōrero , a daily newsletter curated by our editors and delivered straight to your inbox every weekday.
