Microsoft Warns Windows Users—Emergency Update Within Days

Another week, another emergency update for Windows users. Just days after it warned that May's security update was failing for some users, the company has confirmed it has been working the issue and an emergency update is coming soon, telling Windows users it 'plans to release an out-of-band update in the coming days.'
While this affects Windows 11 users, there are echoes of the emergency update for Windows 1o users earlier in the month. Microsoft was quick to acknowledge that it was 'investigating reports of the May 13, 2025 Windows security update (KB5058405) failing to install on some Windows 11, version 22H2 and 23H2 devices.' As I reported when that news hit, an out-of-band update was the inevitable next step.
If you're affected by the issue, you will see a recovery error warning that 'your PC/Device needs to be repaired,' and that 'the operating system couldn't be loaded because a required file is missing or contains errors.'
Microsoft has explained that this ACPI.sys driver issue and will likely display the error code: 0xc0000098. 'The ACPI.sys file (Advanced Configuration and Power Interface) is a critical Windows system driver that enables Windows to manage hardware resources and power states.' The company has also warned that 'there are also reports of this same error occurring with a different file name.'
While some physical devices have been impacted, most reports of this update failure concern virtual environments, 'including Azure Virtual Machines, Azure Virtual Desktop [and] on-premises virtual machines hosted on Citrix or Hyper-V.' That means it's far more likely to impact enterprise rather than home users.
This is different to May's other emergency update, which addressed Windows 10 updates failing with a BitLocker Recovery screen when trying to install May's security update. 'Windows 10 might repeatedly display the BitLocker recovery screen at startup,' the company warned, confirming that other out-of-band update.

The 2025 Finals matchup might prove the NBA Cup means more than you think

The NBA's In-Season Tournament — officially rebranded as the Emirates NBA Cup in 2024 — has been searching for a signature moment to solidify its meaning to fans, and the 2025 NBA Finals matchup between the Oklahoma City Thunder and Indiana Pacers might have just created it. Why? Well, because Oklahoma City and Indiana have something in common besides being two of the league's smallest markets: They are also the last two runners up in the NBA Cup, with the Pacers losing to the Los Angeles Lakers in the inaugural Las Vegas competition in 2023, and the Thunder losing to the Milwaukee Bucks in 2024's version. Advertisement Clearly, both teams were motivated by losing on the biggest stage the league has to offer: a neutral court in Las Vegas in December, and are motivated to win the outdated, post-season tournament the league puts on as some sort of consolation bracket with much lamer courts as a result. This is also a reminder that both IST champions — the Lakers and Bucks — lost in the first-round of the ensuing playoffs, proving that #TheCup also provides a championship hangover to its winners, cementing it as a real, banner-worthy tournament. But while this championship series should be fun, unfortunately, we'll have to wait until next season to see if the Pacers or Bucks can use their experience in the Finals to catapult them towards an even more meaningful prize next year: $500,000 for every player on the roster of the NBA Cup champion.

Knicks vs. Pacers: Indiana finishes off New York to reach first NBA Finals since 2000

It will be the Indiana Pacers against the Oklahoma City Thunder in the 2025 NBA Finals. The Pacers polished off the New York Knicks on Saturday, winning 125-108 in Game 6 of the Eastern Conference finals after a third-quarter rally. It will be their first NBA Finals appearance since 2000, back when Reggie Miller and Jalen Rose starred while Larry Bird coached. Advertisement Game 1 of Pacers-Thunder is scheduled for Thursday in Oklahoma City (8:30 p.m. ET, ABC). The Pacers entered Gainbridge Fieldhouse decked out in all black, a shot at the Knicks doing the same last year, and fulfilled their promise of a funeral. They shot lights out, going 17 of 33 (51.5%) from 3-point range, and punished nearly all of the Knicks' mistakes, with 34 points off 17 turnovers. The Indiana offense was once again a beautiful machine, continuing a postseason in which the Pacers have outraced the Milwaukee Bucks, Cleveland Cavaliers and now the Knicks. The epic comebacks will be better remembered, but it's the Pacers' ability to explode at any moment that has made them so different. It's what happened in the third quarter, when the team jumped out to a 16-point lead they never relinquished. Advertisement Pascal Siakam led all scorers with 31 points on 10-of-18 shooting with five rebounds and three assists, while Tyrese Haliburton shook off a slow first quarter for 21 points and 13 assists. The Pacers' biggest two-way impact came from Andrew Nembhard, who had 14 points, 8 assists and 6 steals. Tyrese Haliburton has the Pacers in the NBA Finals. Thunder heavily favored over Pacers in NBA Finals As good as the Pacers looked in this series, sportsbooks are taking the other team by a significant margin. The Thunder opened as -800 favorites (bet $800 to win $100) at BetMGM to win their first title in OKC. The Finals schedule also is set: Advertisement Game 1: IND@OKC, June 5 (8:30 p.m. ET) Game 2: IND@OKC, June 8 (8 p.m. ET) Game 3: OKC@IND, June 11 (8:30 p.m. ET) Game 4: OKC@IND, June 13 (8:30 p.m. ET) Game 5: IND@OKC, June 16 (8:30 p.m. ET)* Game 6: OKC@IND, June 19 (8:30 p.m. ET)* Game 7: IND@OKC, June 22 (8 p.m. ET)* * = if necessary Pascal Siakam tops Tyrese Haliburton for East finals MVP Haliburton might be the breakout star of this postseason, but it was Siakam who was named Eastern Conference finals MVP after Game 6. He beat out Haliburton five votes to four. Siakam torched the Knicks in Games 2, 4 and 6, playing a key role in every Pacers win after their miracle comeback in Game 1. The Pacers acquired Siakam in a blockbuster trade with the Toronto Raptors in January 2024, with the hope that a star big man with postseason bona fides would give them a championship core. So far, so good. Pacers' win wasn't without injury The Pacers have reached the NBA Finals, but it's another question whether they will be 100% for Game 1. Advertisement Jarace Walker and Aaron Nesmith both left the game with injuries in the fourth quarter. Walker had to be helped to the locker room after appearing to severely sprain his ankle, then Nesmith left minutes later after an ugly collision with Karl-Anthony Towns. Nesmith would be the bigger loss if he's not ready for Game 1 of the Finals. He was Indiana's hero in Game 1 of the conference finals and has overall been enjoying a breakout postseason as a member of the Pacers starting lineup. Fortunately, he and Walker have five days of rest now.
