Springboks' major positional problem emerges
However, in recent times, some warning lights have begun to flash.
Since the 2023 World Cup, and the retirement of Duane Vermeulen, the Springboks have found the No 8 position to be somewhat problematic to fill with consistency.
Yes, Jasper Wiese has emerged as a standout in this position, but ill-discipline and injuries have taken a toll, and it's an area where depth – and a like-for-like replacement for Vermeulen – has been hard to come by.
At blindside flank, the Springboks have had the world-class Pieter-Steph du Toit to rely on, but again, the lack of true quality back up has been evidenced by someone like Franco Mostert having to again fill in on the side of the scrum.
Similarly, Siya Kolisi is the understandable custodian of the No 6 jersey – but in his absence – it's still not crystal clear as to who the next best would be.
As if to evidence this point, the Springboks will line up for this Saturday's must-win match against the Wallasbies with a back row combination that would have been virtually unfathomable just a few weeks ago: 8 Jean-Luc du Preez, 7 Franco Mostert, 6 Marco van Staden.
Yes, the Springboks have been unfortunate with injuries to talented youngsters Elrigh Louw and Cameron Hanekom, but when it comes to the back row balance and depth, it's increasingly evident that this is a worrisome area just two years away from the next World Cup.
The goal of Rassie Erasmus and the coaches is to have two players of almost equal interchangeable quality in every position, but it's in the loose trio where this is proving to be increasingly difficult to find after the retirement of Vermeulen, and as Du Toit and Kolisi head towards their mid-30s.

Entering deep waters at Great Barrier Reef Arena
Pitch for second ODI in Mackay might favour pace bowling. Bookmakers' expectations got bowled out in Australia earlier this week; Proteas fans who kept faith with their team collected on the first ODI against Australia. Punters flush with cash might feel inclined to chase their luck and bung bundles on South Africa and her players to follow up in the second match of the series – on Friday in the northeastern coastal city of Mackay. However, a word of caution: not much is known about the venue, the Great Barrier Reef Arena, and the Proteas could find themselves all at sea. Odds setters are doubling down on Australia as favourites, despite SA's 98-run triumph in the first ODI in Cairns. Odds are often an accurate prediction, based as they are on data, algorithms and what not. But were the following stats considered? SA have won 16 of their past 20 ODIs against Australia. If the Proteas win either of the final two matches in Mackay, it will be their fifth-straight bilateral ODI series win over Australia. SA at 2.65 and Australia at 1.47 looks off kilter. Only one men's ODI has been 'played' at the Great Barrier Reef Arena – in the 1992 World Cup. That game was washed out after two balls, so there are zero stats for top-level action over 50 overs! Matches at a much lower level suggest the pitch is friendlier to pace bowling than the one in Cairns, where Maharaj took 5 for 33. The Top Bowler category has SA quicks Nandre Burger at 5.90 and Lungi Ngidi at 6.00 – behind Aussie counterpart Josh Hazelwood at 4.50. The captain who wins the toss could opt to chase given the chance of dew in the evening of the day-night encounter. Also, it will be tempting to have first use of a fresh pitch. One strategy might be to wait until after the toss to see who bowls first and punt them in the live betting. The match starts at 6.30am SA time on Friday. The third ODI is on Sunday at the same time – also in Mackay.

How much rain should Springbok fans expect at Cape Town Stadium?
The Springboks head into a must-win match at Cape Town Stadium this Saturday as they seek redemption against the Wallabies after a shock loss last weekend. However, the weather forecast suggests that the Springboks – and Wallabies – will need to be prepared for a slippery ball and wet conditions that are likely to also impact the style of play. According to the ever reliable WindGuru forecaster, there is expected to be some light rainfall from around mid morning, and this drizzle could persist until kick off. The good news for fans heading to Cape Town Stadium, though, is that they shouldn't be drenched (only 0.2m/1hr of precipitation is predicted) in the lead up to kick off, and this rain may well abate by half-time. So as it stands, the prediction is more for damp and drizzly conditions rather than a downpour, but the teams will certainly be keeping an eye on whether that forecast changes at all in the next two days. Rassie Erasmus has made it clear that the Springboks will be more circumspect in their approach this weekend. 'With the six-two (split on the bench), it will probably be more of a grind than a running game,' Erasmus added. 'I think the weather will also not allow us to run around (on attack). We were running and not really being effective last Saturday.' Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu: 'Whatever the Springboks jersey number, I'm ready'
Youngster Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu will play a crucial role for the Springboks off the bench in their must-win Rugby Championship match against Australia in Cape Town on Saturday. Image: Ayanda Ndamane Independent Media Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu wants to nail down his role on Saturday and help put the Springboks in the right areas of the field as they look to overcome Australia in the second Rugby Championship Test. The versatile youngster is part of a six-two Bomb Squad replacement bench for the clash at DHL Stadium (5.10 pm kick-off) and is aiming to replicate his performances from last year's tournament. He knows the team is on the back foot, however, and that it will take a collective effort to turn their fortunes around. With potential playing spots up for grabs when the Boks head to New Zealand next month for back-to-back Tests against the All Blacks, Feinberg-Mngomezulu emphasised the importance of staying focused on the present and delivering a strong performance against Australia. What happens afterward, he said, is out of his control. Video Player is loading. Whatever comes from that, hopefully, it is good stuff,' he said on Wednesday. 'I'd be lying if I said I didn't want to play in that game (at Eden Park in Auckland). Ruan (Nortjé) would want to play in it, and a lot of Springbok supporters would want to see us there too. That's up there with one of the coolest things I can imagine. 'However, this week comes first. After last weekend, we're super zoned in and focused on getting a good result for South Africa.' After the 38–22 drubbing at Ellis Park, the Boks have their backs against the wall. But they're known for delivering under pressure, and they won't want to deviate from that identity.
