Ohio officials address community shocked by teen's deadly parade accident
Summit County Sheriff Kandy Fatheree said May 27 that her office is investigating the death of a teen boy after he fell from a float in Green's Memorial Day Parade May 26. The sheriff said during a news conference at the Green Central Administration building that 13-year-old Matthew Schultz was one of seven youths riding on a trailer in the float. It was pulled by a Ford truck along Massillon Road South. In Matthew's fall, he was struck by tires and taken to Akron Children's Hospital, she said. "The truck and trailer were nearing the end of the parade," she said. The investigation is looking into Matthew's fall from the float. "Was there anything that may have occurred that caused him to fall?" she asked "Was there anyone around him?" Green Mayor Rocco Yeargin said the city is reviewing its policies on parades after the incident. "Yesterday," he said, "the unthinkable happened." Yeargin said he spoke briefly with Matthew's family after the incident. "I am grateful for the support our community has shown for the Schultz family," he said. Danielle Paciorek, a friend of the Schultz family, said they are asking for time to deal with the tragedy. "They are holding on tightly to memories, their faith and community...." she said. A GoFundMe page started to help Matthew's family can be reached at By early afternoon May 27, more than $12,600 had been raised. The GoFundMe can also be reached at the City of Green website. Fatheree and Yeargin also asked that the family be given privacy. "Please let them be at home alone," Fatheree said. "Give them the space that they need." Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. A man in Dalton, Georgia, allegedly killed his wife and girlfriend, who was pregnant, before fatally shooting himself. The Dalton Police Department identified the suspected shooter as 37-year-old Kevin Andrew Akins in an information release sent to Newsweek. The Context Police said Kevin fatally shot his wife, 35-year-old Rebeca Nicole Akins, at her apartment in Dalton early Wednesday morning. Detectives found surveillance footage of Kevin Akins leaving that apartment around 6 a.m. Then, he drove to his girlfriend Cindel Mae Rhoden's apartment, where he allegedly shot and killed the 33-year-old. Rhoden's family said in a GoFundMe that she was five months pregnant when she was killed. Police said Akins fatally shot himself after killing his wife and girlfriend. What To Know On Friday, officers were called to Rebeca Akins' apartment around 6 p.m. after her coworkers reported that they hadn't seen or heard from her for several days. Officers found her deceased with an apparent gunshot wound to the head. Officers were able to trace Kevin's vehicle to Rhoden's apartment and were waiting for a search warrant when they saw Rhoden's father use a key to enter the home. He called 911 to report that he had found his daughter and another man dead inside the apartment. Rhoden is survived by two young daughters, according to the GoFundMe. "We would just like to have enough money to give her a burial she deserves, so those girls will have a place to go visit their mom," Barker said. The family said the GoFundMe fundraiser will support funeral arrangements and the children. "Cindel was in a relationship with a man who was married to his estranged wife and she fell victim of manipulation and in a devastating turn of events, he took the life of his wife, then drove to Cindel's home to kill her," the GoFundMe said. What People Are Saying Ashley Barker, GoFundMe organizer, on a fundraising page for Cindel Rhoden: "Cindel was more than just a victim of this tragedy she was kind, full of life, and a devoted mom doing her best for her girls. Her daughters are now in the care of family, but they need help." Lynn Barker, Cindel Rhoden's aunt, told WTOC: "I know everybody judges. People speculate, and they're entitled to that. But as humans, don't lose compassion. There's a lot of lives that are devastated and broken. Nobody asked for this. Why it happened, we don't know." 9-year-old with cerebral palsy dies in shooting on mom's birthday, MO family says
A 9-year-old boy was killed in a drive-by shooting that also left his older brother and father injured, according to Missouri police and family members. The St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department is now searching for the accused shooter following the May 24 shooting on Bircher Boulevard near Ruskin Avenue, an area along Interstate 70. Richard Neal Jr. said his family was fired upon as they were celebrating the birthday of Johnisha Hillard, the mother of their children. (Warning: Explicit language in the Facebook links.) 'It was random, we didn't do anything to them,' Neal told KMOV. 'We got on the highway to put gas in the car, never seen the car, don't know the occupants of the car, I passed them up, next thing you know, he got behind me, slowed all the way down, he sped all the way up on my bumper and got beside us and just started firing off shots.' Hillard said in a Facebook post there was 'blood everywhere' as she recalled the cries from her children. Neal, who was reportedly shot in the leg, began driving to the hospital after two of his children in the back seat had also been shot. His 10-year-old son, Richard Neal III, was shot in the chest and was listed in critical but stable condition at a St. Louis hospital, according to KSDK and a police news briefing streamed by KTVI. Jordan Neal, Hillard and Richard Neal Jr.'s 9-year-old son who was born with cerebral palsy, died from his injuries. 'It was my birthday… and now it's my son's death day,' Hillard told KSDK. 'Horrible. I will never enjoy another birthday. Because now I have to celebrate the life and the passing of my son, Jordan.' Police have not identified the shooter, and a motive is unclear. Jordan was born premature, weighing just 1 pound, 2 ounces, his family told KSDK. After battling through surgeries all of his life, he 'fought for three hours' in the hospital before dying. At 9 years old, Jordan was set to go to school for the first time later this year, having already picked out his Spider-Man backpack, according to his father. 'He faced every challenge with a bright spirit and a smile that could light up any room,' the family said in a GoFundMe. 'He had already overcome so much, and losing him has left a hole in our hearts that can never be filled.' Anyone who has information about the shooting has been asked to contact police at 314-444-5371. 'You're heartless and you're a coward because you didn't have to shoot and kill anybody. They did nothing to you,' Pamela Neal, Jordan's grandmother, said in an interview with KMOV.
