Compassionate teen killed in after-prom crash on Cape Cod hoped to become a nurse
An 18-year-old is being remembered for her compassion and kindness. Ava Lodico had been driving at around 11 p.m. on Acapesket Road when her Range Rover SUV rolled and hit a tree, then caught fire on May 17, reported. It was an hour after she left her senior prom. She died in the rollover car crash. 'Ava was generous, compassionate and kind,' her obituary read. 'Inclusive of all those around her. She made everyone laugh with her great sense of humor and quick-witted comebacks. Her smile was radiant and she could light up a room.' She was a senior at Falmouth High School. She was planning to attend Umass Dartmouth this fall and was enrolled in the nursing program. She volunteered for Falmouth Road Race and the Ryan Hendricks I Got You foundation. She also loved the beach, watching sunsets with friends, dancing and attending concerts. A GoFundMe for Lodico's family has raised more than $30,000 as of Saturday. 'She lived her life to the fullest and was the life of the party,' her obituary read. A visitation will take place on May 27 from 3-7 p.m. at Chapman Funerals & Cremations in Falmouth. A funeral service will take place on May 28 at 1 p.m. at Cape Cod Church, which is located at 1205 Nathan Ellis Highway in East Falmouth. Next to it, a cross bearing Lodico's name had been erected, according to a photo shared by the Cape Cod Times. "I'm just amazed at how many friends she had. I knew she had a lot of friends, but not to this extent," Lodico's mother, Brandi Santos, told ABC affiliate WCVB. "Just seeing the love, I didn't know my daughter had this much of an impact on these kids. I'm just at a loss for words." Elizabeth McLain, one of the teachers in Lodico's English class, brought a flower and said she saw her in her prom dress before she died, the paper reported. "She looked beautiful," she said. The Falmouth High School senior was killed in a single-vehicle crash on Acapesket Road, according to the Falmouth Police Department, Falmouth Fire and Rescue Department and Falmouth Public Schools. Students and staff were offered counseling services when they returned to school on Monday. Authorities responded to the accident around 11 p.m. local time, and Lodico was the only person in the vehicle, according to the Cape Cod Times. Video from the scene of the crash shared by NBC affiliate WBTS showed extensive damage to the front of the vehicle. Lodico died just three weeks before she was set to graduate from Falmouth High School on June 7. A GoFundMe to support Lodico's family has already raised more than $23,000 as of the afternoon of Wednesday, May 21. Video from the scene, shared by the local outlets, showed the white Range Rover SUV driven by Lodico off the side of the road. The vehicle appeared to have slammed into trees, and the front end of the SUV sustained heavy damage. Lodico's god-brother, Tayden Rose, told NBC affiliate WBTS that Lodico had attended prom the night before the crash. "It's just a shame,' he said. Ava's god-sister, Jada Rose, said she and Lodico were 'really, really close' growing up. 'It feels like a cruel joke,' she explained. 'It doesn't feel real." Graduation at Falmouth High School is scheduled for June 7, CBS affiliate WBZ-TV and NBC affiliate WBTS reported. Loved ones told WFXT that Lodico planned to study nursing at the University of Massachusetts at Dartmouth. "She was an amazing person; she didn't deserve this. Nobody deserves it this young," said Falmouth High School student Thomas Dean, per WCVB-TV. Another friend, Bea Mariani, described Lodico as a 'funny' person. "It doesn't feel real," she said. "We were just planning a graduation a couple of days ago, and now it's just moving forward with loss." Ava Lodico was identified by her friends and family as the young woman killed in the crash, according to WCVB and Boston 25. Lodico had been driving at around 11 p.m. on Acapesket Road when her Range Rover SUV rolled and hit a tree, then caught fire, reported. Lodico couldn't be brought by helicopter to the hospital due to weather, the outlet said, and she later died at Falmouth Hospital. Her senior prom, themed 'Garden of Lights' and held at the Coonamesset Inn, had ended just an hour earlier. The crash happened only 10 minutes from the prom venue. 'We were all just dancing and having a great time at prom,' a friend of Lodico's, Erin Barr, told Boston 25. 'It's just so upsetting that this happened and extremely surreal .... She was just the sweetest soul to everybody,' Barr said. Counseling was made available to students on Sunday and Monday, according to a statement on Facebook from the Falmouth Police Department. The department and Falmouth High School did not immediately respond to MassLive for comment. One of Lodico's friends, Jazzy Fernandes, said she got a call about Lodico's crash on Saturday night, Boston 25 reported. She tried to go to the scene of the crash, but it was blocked off, and found out Lodico had died when she got to the hospital. Fernandes told the outlet, 'It doesn't feel real.' Another close friend of Lodico's, Bea Mariani, said the two had been planning their joint graduation party and just made their invite list, the outlet said. Mariani took the first boat back from Martha's Vineyard when she heard of her friend's death. The investigation into the crash is ongoing and a cause has not yet been publicly identified as of Monday morning. Falmouth car crash kills high school senior just weeks before graduation
A high school senior was killed in a car crash late Saturday night in Falmouth, Massachusetts, authorities said. The 18-year-old driver was a student at Falmouth High School. Police have not yet named the victim. The single-car crash happened on Acapesket Road. Video from the scene showed a white Range Rover SUV with heavy front-end damage. It appeared to have struck a tree not far from the side of the road. Graduation is scheduled for June 7. "Our thoughts and prayers are with the family during this difficult time," Falmouth public schools Supt. Lori Duerr said in a statement along with police and fire officials. Counselors were at the high school Sunday afternoon, and more support will be offered at school on Monday for students and staff.
