
TTC fare inspectors will have a new name and new look as of Sunday
The TTC has announced that their fare inspectors will instead be known as Provincial Offences Officers, starting on Sunday.
The rebrand is in response to the 2019 Toronto Auditor General's report that suggested a stronger inspection presence would encourage people not to skip out on paying their fair fare. The Toronto Auditor General reported in 2019 that the TTC's overall fare evasion rate was 5.4 per cent, losing $61 million in fares in 2018.
According to the TTC fare evasion has since more than doubled.
'As much as $140 million is lost to fare evasion every year', according to the last TTC audit in 2023.
Provincial Offences Officers will continue to hand out fare evasion tickets, but now in a new uniform consisting of a grey shirt and vest. These tickets can range from $245 to $425.
The TTC receives funding from the federal, provincial, and municipal government but about 42 per cent of its budget comes from the fare box, which is significantly more than other Ontario public transit agencies.
'The TTC receives a significant City of Toronto operating subsidy but also relies heavily on fares to support its operations. This transition to Provincial Offences Officers is one of several initiatives that we have rolled out recently to encourage fare compliance,' TTC CEO Mandeep S. Lali said in a press release. 'We remind customers that when they choose not to pay their fare, it impacts our ability to increase service and keep fare prices low.'
The TTC's 2025 budget kept fares frozen at 2023 rates and is taking steps to recoup lost revenue. Some of these steps include hiring more fare inspectors and introducing plain clothes fare inspectors.

Lethbridge's police chief will stay on as the city's top cop for another four years. The Lethbridge Police Commission has announced Chief Shahin Mehdizadeh's contract has been extended until 2029. The commission says the chief has provided consistent leadership through a period of transition and change. The commission added that the extension of the contract comes at a time when the city's Crime Severity Index dropped 19 per cent compared to the year before. Mehdizadeh began his policing career with the RCMP in 1989 and has been with the LPS since 2020. The commission says his contract extension will help continue momentum in a positive direction in the years to come.

Winnipeg developer recognized with honorary street naming

Councillor Vivian Santos announced an honorific street naming of the area between 93 Lombard Avenue and 111 Lombard Avenue intersecting with Westbrook Street as 'Monte Nathanson Way.' The name honours the developer, who passed away in 2024 at the age of 93. 'Monte was a pioneer, not just in bricks and mortar, but in imagination,' Santos said. 'When others looked at Winnipeg's old warehouse buildings and saw relics of the past, Monte saw potential. He believed in the power of restoration and revitalization, and through his leadership, we saw the rebirth of the Exchange District.' Coun. 'It was in shambles: sinking floors, rail sidings, corroded plumbing and a dilapidated loading dock,' said his daughter Sherryl Steinberg. 'But that's not what he saw. He saw the beauty of original brick and beam. He saw a stately, dignified building that could become the launchpad for a revitalized area. Once again, he had a plan to restore Winnipeg's architectural heritage and make the Exchange District and waterfront a place to work, live and learn.' Nathanson, who helped create United Equities Group, also helped restore numerous historic properties in Winnipeg, including 111 Lombard Avenue and 200 Waterfront Drive. 'Monte left his mark, not only in our skyline, but in the very soul of our downtown,' Santos said. 'His work helped build the cultural and economic vibrancy we are all enjoying today.'

N.B. government reviewing labour board's order to rescind school layoff notices
Many New Brunswick librarians are uncertain if they will have jobs in September. Laid off library workers and school support staff in New Brunswick are still unclear about their future, a week after an order was issued for their pink slips to be rescinded. The New Brunswick Labour and Employment Board found the provincial government didn't bargain in good faith with the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) earlier this year when it 'failed in its duty to disclose government decisions that would and did have a significant impact on the negotiations process.' The board ordered the province rescind layoff notices, as well as rescind the decision to reduce working hours for school administrative assistants, until the ratification of a tentative agreement. A total of 69 workers in Anglophone School District West were issued layoff notices in April, including: 32 library workers 19 education assistants 10 administrative assistants seven district administrative support staff members one student attendant Layoff notices were also sent to 13 full-time and five part-time library workers in Anglophone School District South, with District scolaire francophone Sud also confirming lay off notices. Theresa McAllister, president of CUPE Local 2745 Educational Support Staff, said the union hasn't heard anything directly from the provincial government since the board's order was issued. 'I know I have some feelers out there trying to find out some information as to how and when we start to move forward,' says McAllister. Education Minister Claire Johnson responded to the board's order on Friday, telling reporters she had no new information to share with affected workers. A written statement from the department on Monday said it would 'be taking time to review' the board's decision without offering a timeline on when that might be completed. When layoff notices were first issued this past spring, Johnson said every school district was being directed to prioritize money for literacy and numeracy skills while finding $43 million in savings. In June, the province budgeted an additional $14.6 million for school districts but didn't tie the money to hiring back laid off workers. Interim Progressive Conservative Leader Glen Savoie says the labour and employment board's decision is clear, questioning what exactly that government has to review. '(The provincial government) has been found guilty in a sense,' says Savoie. 'So here we are, now having to wait, while the government decides whether or not it wants to take responsibility.' Green Party Leader David Coon says the provincial government is trying to delay the inevitable. 'I don't understand why they're treating it as complicated, it's very straightforward,' says Coon.
