Dortmund want to take final step in Champions League berth bid

Borussia Dortmund sporting director Sebastian Kehl is convinced that the team will not stumble like two years ago and get the necessary final victory in Saturday's Bundesliga finale to qualify for the next Champions League.
Dortmund are fifth, and a victory by three goals over relegated Holstein Kiel will assure them of a top four finish, regardless of the outcome of the other key match between third-placed Eintracht Frankfurt and Freiburg in fourth.

If Dortmund win by fewer goals they can still qualify for the Champions League, but would need Frankfurt to avoid defeat.
Two years ago Dortmund lost the title race against Bayern Munich because they failed to beat Mainz on the final matchday, but Kehl told Thursday's Kicker sports magazine that this won't happen again.
"We have gotten over that game for a long time. The situation is different now, we're still in the chasing pack and can leap into the Champions League places with a win," he said.
Kehl urged an all-out effort from the team, which is unbeaten in seven games of which it has won six, against Kiel who beat Dortmund in the reverse fixture in January.

"We have treated every game as a final, Saturday's is the last final on the home straight - and we want to leave no doubt from the very first second against Kiel, with whom we still have a score to settle, that we want to take that final step," Kehl said.
"The clear goal is to reach the Champions League."
Kehl also struck a similar line as sporting managing director Lars Ricken when he said there would be no major squad rebuild in summer.
"There are existing contracts to be considered. We also have to consider the economic conditions. We certainly won't be able to make five or six top transfers - in case anyone thinks that," Kehl said.

Chelsea bring in Livia Peng as first summer addition
Chelsea have confirmed the signing of Swiss international goalkeeper Livia Peng from Werder Bremen on a four-year contract. The 23-year-old will officially link up with the Blues on 1 July, once her current deal expires, and is expected to compete with Hannah Hampton for the starting spot under new head coach Sonia Bompastor. Advertisement Peng arrives as a direct replacement for Sweden's Zecira Musovic, who is set to leave the club this summer when her contract runs out. Capped seven times by Switzerland, Peng previously enjoyed success at FC Zurich, where she helped the side secure league and cup doubles in both 2019 and 2022. She joined Werder Bremen in 2023 and quickly became their first-choice keeper, starting all but one of their Frauen-Bundesliga matches last season as they finished seventh. Speaking about his move, Livia said: "I'm excited about everything. I'm looking forward to meeting the team, the staff, and everyone at the club. The support here is so big, I can't wait to play at Stamford Bridge. Advertisement "I'm excited to meet the fans at the stadium. I've heard so many good things about them. I'm looking forward to seeing what the Chelsea family is like. I want to feel their passion and support."

Liverpool reach verbal agreement with Bayer Leverkusen for Florian Wirtz
Fabrizio Romano reports that Liverpool have reached a verbal agreement in principle with Bayer Leverkusen to sign Florian Wirtz for a reported €150m including bonuses. It brings an end to the saga that will see the 22-year-old German playmaker play for Arne Slot's side next season. Liverpool's latest offer comes just days after it was reported that Leverkusen were expecting a final offer from the Premier League side after rejecting two previous approaches. Advertisement The arrival of Wirtz – who is expected to sign a contract until 2030 – at Liverpool will see two transfer records broken: the record fee received by a Bundesliga club for a player, and a record arrival in the Premier League, beating Chelsea's record purchase of Enzo Fernandez for around €121m. Wirtz scored 10 goals and provided 13 assists in 31 Bundesliga games for Bayer Leverkusen last season, and 31 goal contributions (16 goals and 15 assists) in 45 games across all competitions. Liverpool's insane transfer plan BIGGER than Florian Wirtz
Liverpool's transfer plan this summer went bigger than Florian Wirtz. The Reds are close to breaking their transfer record for the German star. Liverpool hope to close a deal for Florian Wirtz before long. The Reds have pushed forward on a club-record transfer with Bayer Leverkusen. Advertisement And that's a shock. Liverpool weren't supposed to be in the running for Wirtz, with Bayern Munich thought to be absolutely certainties to sign him. After all, the Bundesliga champions essentially have a first option on all elite German talent. That's how it seems, at least. But Wirtz chose Liverpool. He rejected Bayern Munich and Manchester City, who wanted a replacement for Kevin De Bruyne. Wonderful news for Liverpool, then, who have surprised everyone with a move of this scale. However, it appears they planned to go even bigger. Florian Wirtz x Rayan Cherki France-based broadcaster Matt Spiro claims Liverpool had a pretty incredible plan. He suggests the Reds tried to sign both Wirtz and Rayan Cherki this summer. Advertisement Certainly, he's not the first to report that Liverpool wanted Cherki. The Athletic claimed last week that Arne Slot flew to France to discuss plans with the French playmaker. Ultimately, Cherki chose Manchester City over the Reds but it appears Liverpool had a grand plan of signing both no.10s for next season. That naturally draws up many more questions: how would they play together? Would the formation change? Who makes way? Who plays where? And we're also disappointed that it won't happen - but not surprised. Wirtz was always the main target over Cherki and the Frenchman would understandably prefer to have more of a starring role at City. Still, we can't help but admire the ambition here. Liverpool tried to make something very special happen and fell just short of it.
