This Gastonia group has gotten a record number of requests for rental assistance
Now the ministry will be working to fill those needs without additional funding from the Department of Social Services, which has been out of funds for Rent Assistance since November, according to the county.
Emergency Rental Assistance Program funding provided to CAM and other organizations through DSS was awarded to the county staring in 2021 to relieve the financial hardship caused by the pandemic, and on Nov. 19, the last of that funding was exhausted, county spokesman Adam Gaub said.
While tax return season has slowed the flow of applications in February, Wheeler said she expects the numbers to increase again throughout the year.
In 2023, Leah Hedgpath, the executive director of Dallas High Shoals Christian Ministry, said she had seen more of her clients go from having homes and vehicles to living on the streets than ever before.
Hedgpath said at the time that the lack of access to rent assistance in the area in combination with other hurdles related to finding affordable housing was contributing to the problem.
This year, CAM has seen large increases in call volume from residents all over Gaston County, Wheeler said. CAM only assists residents of Gastonia and in addition to turning those outside of the city away, the organization has also had to turn people away with rent issues that are simply too large.
The team is currently looking to raise awareness about the rising cost of living and find solutions to continue helping Gastonia residents to the fullest, she said.
According to the North Carolina Housing Coalition's 2025 report, Gastonia is one of the North Carolina cities with the highest fair market rent rates. HUD defines fair market rent as the cost to rent a moderately priced dwelling unit in a designated market.
The NCHC report listed Gastonia's fair market rent alongside Charlotte and Concord at $1,824 per month.
Out of the 409 applications for rent assistance submitted to CAM in January, 60 were from people who had never applied before, which Wheeler said is indicative of the state of rent prices and overall economic struggles in the area.
Wheeler said CAM continues to partner with other groups in the area to find assistance for those living outside of Gastonia, but the options are limited and could become scarce moving further into the year with less available funding.

Opendoor Stock (OPEN) Soars as CEO Carrie Wheeler Steps Down Ahead of AI-Focused Shift
Opendoor Technologies (OPEN), the real estate company that has recently gained 'meme stock' status, announced that Carrie Wheeler has stepped down as both chair and CEO, effective immediately. Elevate Your Investing Strategy: Take advantage of TipRanks Premium at 50% off! Unlock powerful investing tools, advanced data, and expert analyst insights to help you invest with confidence. Shrisha Radhakrishna, the former chief technology and product officer, will serve as interim CEO while the company searches for a permanent replacement. Radhakrishna, known for launching features like Cash Plus and cutting infrastructure costs, said he's excited to 'build the platform that defines the future of residential real estate transactions.' Also, Eric Feder, a board member from LenX, has been appointed lead independent director and will oversee the selection process with support from executive search firm Spencer Stuart. Wheeler's Exit Follows Activist Investor Push Importantly, her departure comes after weeks of rising pressure from activist retail investors who have been pushing for a more visionary leader to align with the company's AI ambitions. Retail investors lost patience with Wheeler, saying she lacked energy and a clear vision. Her Q2 earnings call was criticized for not putting forth a strong plan for using AI. Following this, founder of hedge fund EMJ Capital, Eric Jackson, called for her to step down, saying, 'I'm out on Carrie Wheeler. Next man or woman up.' It must be noted that Jackson had shared a positive outlook on social media, comparing OPEN's potential to Carvana's (CVNA) rapid growth. His posts helped drive Opendoor stock's 900% rally, lifting it from $0.51 to nearly $5. Interestingly, Jackson believes that Opendoor's large collection of data, such as home prices, photos, and agent info, could power a real estate platform built around AI. Is OPEN Stock a Good Buy? average OPEN price target of $1.27 per share implies 62.70% downside risk.

Opendoor stock pops 10% as CEO resigns following investor pressure campaign
Opendoor shares popped about 10% on Friday after CEO Carrie Wheeler said she's resigning from the online real estate company, which has seen a surge in recent interest from retail investors. Pressure began building on Wheeler, who took over the top job in 2022, after the company's quarterly earnings report earlier this month failed to reassure investors that a turnaround is underway. The stock is up more than sixfold since bottoming out at 51 cents in June, a price that put the company at risk of being delisted from the Nasdaq. "The last weeks of intense outside interest in Opendoor have come at a time when the company needs to stay focused and charging ahead," Wheeler wrote in a post on X. "I believe the best thing I can do for Opendoor now is to accelerate my succession plans that I shared with the Board mid-year and make room for new leadership to take the reins." Opendoor's business involves using technology to buy and sell homes, pocketing the gains. In its latest earnings report, Opendoor said it expects to acquire just 1,200 homes in the third quarter, down from 1,757 in the second quarter and 3,504 in the third quarter of 2024. It's also pulling down marketing spending. Hedge fund manager Eric Jackson, who spearheaded Opendoor's stock jump in July, celebrated the news and told his new band of followers on X, "Let's start THINKING BIG AGAIN." Jackson said last month on X that his firm had taken a stake in the company and was betting it would be a "100-bagger over the next few years." Jackson has been a loud voice on X pushing for Wheeler's departure, and was recently joined by Opendoor co-founder and venture capitalist Keith Rabois, who posted on Aug. 13 that "not a single founder nor executive" who guided the company to its IPO supports Wheeler as CEO. Opendoor on Friday named technology chief Shrisha Radhakrishna as "president and interim leader" and said a CEO search is underway. Opendoor went public through a special purpose acquisition company in 2020, riding a SPAC wave supported by low interest rates and Covid-era market euphoria. The soaring inflation and rising interest rates that followed hit all of technology stocks, but had an outsized impact on Opendoor due it its direct exposure to mortgage rates. The company lost 99% of its value from early 2021 through its trough in June. With Friday's gains, its market cap stands at about $2.5 billion.
