Walid Jumblatt reaffirms Syria's unity, says Israeli threats cannot continue indefinitely

LBCI14-07-2025
Progressive Socialist Party leader Walid Jumblatt affirmed that Syria "was and will remain united."
Speaking after his meeting with Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri, he said: 'Some people in Sweida misunderstood me — it is under the protection of the Syrian state.'
He added, 'As for Lebanon, our understanding is to preserve Greater Lebanon. Historically, the Levant stretches from Lebanon to Iraq, but we remain committed to the current states.'
Jumblatt stressed that the remaining appointments will move forward as planned.
He said he and Berri discussed several issues, including the situation in the south, noting that the matter is in safe hands and that he refuses to interfere in it.
Describing Israeli threats as a 'constant sword hanging overhead,' he added, 'But things can't go on like this — either there is a ceasefire or there isn't.'

Hezbollah categorically denies report on its 'readiness to clash with state' over arms

by Naharnet Newsdesk 14 hours Hezbollah on Wednesday categorically denied remarks attributed to it by Al-Arabiya and its Al-Hadath channel about its 'readiness to clash with the Lebanese state' if it wants to remove its weapons. Hezbollah also denied what it called the 'other lies' reported by the two networks. 'These reports are totally baseless and are mere false accusations fabricated by the imagination of those channels to serve suspicious agendas seeking to sow confusion and undermine stability in Lebanon,' Hezbollah's media relations department said in a statement. 'Accordingly, the media relations department calls on all media outlets to ignore those fabricated reports and not to capitalize on them in analyses and stances, reiterating the importance of contacting the relevant department in Hezbollah to inquire about its stances and viewpoints on the events and developments, especially amid these critical and sensitive circumstances,' the Hezbollah statement added. Al-Hadath had earlier reported that Hezbollah's 'military wing' had informed Speaker Nabih Berri that it would not hand over its arms and that it is 'not interested in an economic conference or in reconstruction,' quoting unnamed sources. 'No one in Hezbollah's leadership can take a decision to hand over the weapons and Hezbollah will not implement any decision even if anyone pledges that,' the sources said. 'Hezbollah is saying that it will not turn in its arms even if Israel withdraws and that it is ready to clash with the (Lebanese) state,' the sources claimed, adding that Berri has informed U.S. envoy Tom Barrack that 'he does not promise that arms will be removed north of the Litani before the year's end even if Israel withdraws.' President Joseph Aoun and Prime Minister Nawaf Salam, however, intend to press on with 'declaring a pledge to monopolize weapons,' the sources said, adding that Aoun and Salam will not allow 'Hezbollah's intransigence' to prevent 'the return to the Arab and international fold.' 'The Lebanese state has been infuriated by Hezbollah's insistence on wasting the chance,' the sources alleged.

Negotiations continue: Israel to join Azerbaijan talks on Syria despite tensions with US envoy

Report by Amal Shehadeh, English adaptation by Yasmine Jaroudi Despite its frustration with the U.S. envoy's stance on Syria, Israel is set to take part in security talks in Azerbaijan on Thursday. The negotiations, attended by U.S. presidential envoy Tom Barrack and representatives from Syria, aim to reach understandings that could prevent further escalation along the volatile Israeli-Syrian front. The discussions will primarily focus on security arrangements in southern Syria and on strengthening coordination and communication between the two sides to prevent potential flare-ups. The talks come amid growing discontent in Israel over Barrcak's perceived support for the Syrian government and his criticism of Israel, which he has accused of working to fragment and divide Syria. His position has drawn comparisons to Turkey's stance, which has threatened intervention to block any moves toward partitioning Syrian territory. Meanwhile, Israeli security agencies have decided to maintain maximum alert levels along the border, with ongoing military drills simulating possible infiltration attempts by hostile groups operating from Syrian territory. The Israeli army says it is continuing operations to prevent what it calls the establishment of terrorist infrastructure in southern Syria. It is also actively monitoring and targeting individuals it describes as arms dealers affiliated with Iran, Hezbollah, and Hamas.
