Opposition slams govt after Shirgao stampede

Time of India03-05-2025

Margao:
Opposition leaders across party lines launched a scathing attack on state govt on Saturday, holding it responsible for the stampede at the
Shree Lairai Devi Jatra
in Shirgao that claimed six lives and left several injured. The incident sparked intense criticism of the administration's alleged failure in managing the religious gathering. The opposition has also demanded a thorough investigation into the circumstances that led to the stampede.
State Congress president Amit Patkar, who visited the site, termed the tragedy 'entirely preventable'. After meeting temple committee members and govt officials, Patkar said, 'Lack of crowd control, power failures and zero public safety measures point to a complete collapse of administration. BJP govt cannot escape responsibility.'
AICC president Mallikarjun Kharge accused state govt of evading responsibility. 'Govt's failure to provide basic facilities and maintain law and order led to this catastrophe,' he said.
Leader of the opposition Yuri Alemao expressed deep sorrow over the incident while extending support to the bereaved families.
GFP president Vijai Sardesai questioned the effectiveness of the security arrangements, pointing to the govt's earlier claims of deploying 1,000 police personnel and drone surveillance. 'Now that this incident occurred, where were those 1,000 police personnel?' Sardesai said. He said a compensation of Rs 1 crore should be given to each victim's family.
Sardesai blamed the incident on 'complete administrative collapse' at the jatra, terming it 'a failure of law and order and health and emergency response'.
AAP's Arvind Kejriwal also expressed grief over the tragedy. He said his 'thoughts are with the families who lost their loved ones'.

CLAT PG 2025: Delhi High Court asks NLUs to amend key, declare results

The Delhi High Court on Friday granted relief to CLAT-PG candidates over alleged discrepancies in the answer key and directed the consortium of NLUs to declare results soon. A bench of Chief Justice D K Upadhyaya and Justice Tushar Rao Gedela's decision came over the plea of students in relation to a couple of answers in the key. The court, however, rejected the objection with respect to the declared answer to a third question, and asked the consortium of national law universities (NLUs) to accordingly award marks to the candidates. The court passed the order while deciding three pleas seeking rectification of errors in the final answer key of the Common Law Admission Test (CLAT)-PG 2025. The bench's verdict highlighted the issue of a high fee of Rs 1,000 charged by the consortium per question for raising the objection to the provisional answer key, observing there ought to be a 'fine balance' between the concerns of the candidates and the institutions. While comparing the fee charged for objected questions by other organisations, the fees sought by the consortium 'appeared to be excessive and disproportionate' but the consortium's concern that it was required to keep frivolous individuals and coaching institutes at bay also did not appear to be 'fanciful or imaginative', it added. The bench, however, expected the consortium to take heed of its observations and take appropriate steps to 'avoid such excessive fee in the next examinations'. 'It may be advisable for the consortium to place this issue before the committee headed by Justice G. Raghuram (retd) for his valuable opinion which may be adhered to by it,' the bench said. The court ruled on the correctness of the answers in the answer key after considering each question and the submissions made by the counsel for the petitioners and the consortium. CLAT determines admissions to undergraduate and postgraduate law courses in national law universities in the country. CLAT PG 2025 was held on December 1, 2024. Multiple pleas were filed in different high courts alleging several questions in the exam were wrong. On February 6, the Supreme Court transferred all the petitions over the issue to the Delhi High Court for a 'consistent adjudication'. The top court passed the direction on the transfer petitions of the consortium.

Kumaraswamy describes suspension of police officers as political ploy

Bengaluru, June 6 (UNI) Former Karnataka Chief Minister HD Kumaraswamy on Friday sharply criticised the Karnataka government for its handling of the recent Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) felicitation event, describing the suspension of Police Commissioner B Dayanand as a political ploy to deflect responsibility. Speaking to the media in a joint BJP JDS press conference, Kumaraswamy said the government was distancing itself from the event, claiming it was not the organiser, but the sincerity of this claim was questionable. 'This is an attempt to manipulate public perception and protect political positions. There is no clear evidence that the government authorised or adequately managed the event,' he said. Kumaraswamy expressed serious concern over the confusion caused by dual arrangements for the event — one at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium and another on the Karnataka Legislative Assembly steps — which led to chaotic scenes and loss of lives. He emphasised that poor planning and lack of coordination by the government contributed directly to the tragedy. 'The government's vague permissions and conflicting communication created an unsafe environment for the public. This is not a failure of the police but a failure of the government's leadership and management,' he added. He also highlighted the inadequacy of compensation for victims of the accident, pointing out a stark disparity. 'In other states, victims receive good amount of compensation for serious accidents, whereas here only Rs 10 lakh is offered. While money cannot replace life, better humanitarian support is the least the families deserve,' Kumaraswamy said. On the suspension of police officials, he argued that merely suspending a few officers was a superficial response. 'Suspending two or four officers and damaging their reputations won't solve the deeper problems. The government must take full responsibility for the mismanagement,' he asserted. Kumaraswamy urged the government to stop blaming police personnel and focus on delivering justice and support to the victims and their families. 'There is no room for political games in tragedies. The people of Karnataka deserve transparency, accountability, and humane governance,' he concluded.

The Reserve Bank of India's Monetary Policy Committee cut the repo rate by 50 basis points, lowering it from 6% to 5.5%. This is the third consecutive rate cut. Central banks usually reduce repo rates to stimulate economic growth by making borrowing cheaper for individuals and businesses. This translates to lower equated monthly instalments for borrowers. The RBI retained India's growth projection for the financial year 2025-'26 at 6.5% despite global uncertainties, with quarterly estimates unchanged. Read on. The Karnataka Police arrested four persons, including an official of the Royal Challengers Bengaluru, in connection with the stampede that took place outside the Chinnaswamy Stadium. Those arrested are Nikhil Sosale, the marketing head of the cricket franchise, along with event management firm DNA Entertainment Networks' Sunil Mathew, Kiran and Sumanth. This came after Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Thursday said that the state government had ordered the arrest of representatives from the Karnataka State Cricket Association, DNA Entertainment Networks and Royal Challengers Bengaluru. A first information report was filed against the persons based on a complaint alleging that criminal negligence had led to the stampede. Eleven persons had died and several were injured in the incident on Wednesday. Fans had gathered to celebrate the team's victory in the Indian Premier League. Read on. The Congress described the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla railway line as an example of 'continuity in governance', which it claimed had not been acknowledged by Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his 'perennial desire for self-glory'. The statement came ahead of Modi inaugurating the Chenab bridge on Friday. The world's highest railway arch bridge is part of the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla rail link. Congress leader Jairam Ramesh said that the project was sanctioned in March 1995 when Congress' PV Narasimha Rao was the prime minister and that it was declared a national project in 2002 by Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee of the Bharatiya Janata Party. The contract for the Chenab bridge was awarded in 2005, Ramesh said, adding that several segments of the project had been inaugurated by the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance government.
