Workers across generations and industries aren't walking away from the table; rather, they're renegotiating what matters. Many are willing to reconsider previously hard-won benefits—such as remote work—if it means gaining more long-term value in return, like upskilling opportunities, time autonomy, and roles that align with their values. It's about reshaping the deal to reflect what talent sees as sustainable and future-proof.
As CEO of the world's leading talent company, I see this moment as an opportunity for recalibration toward a better way forward, which requires adapting leadership to one that listens and aligns with what matters most to people—and business—today.
The message from talent is that they're prepared to compromise: not by adding more on top of existing benefits, but by rethinking what really matters. Traditional levers like salary and location are no longer enough on their own. Instead, talent are placing greater value on flexibility, purpose, development, and well-being. Here are four of the most important trade-offs every leader should understand—and act on.
Employability and growth: the new cornerstones of retention
Across the board, workers are doubling down on long-term relevance. The value of remote work is no longer the top priority it once was, as 67% of respondents in the global survey say they now place greater importance on staying employable, and 52% would choose upskilling over the ability to work remotely.
This shift signals a broader recalibration of what drives loyalty. Yes, inflation-linked raises still matter—74% say they're essential—but they're not enough. Nearly as many workers say that managerial support (68%) and alignment with company values (67%) are what keep them committed over the long term.
In other words, talent want more than a paycheck. They want to be developed, supported, and connected to something meaningful. Employers who invest in future-focused learning and career support build trust and resilience. That trust is a powerful differentiator, whereas retention strategies that ignore these elements will fall short, especially as the market rebounds and mobility increases.
Time has become the new currency
Flexibility is evolving. It's no longer just about where we work; it's about when: 59% of workers now say they would prefer time autonomy over a higher salary, and 56% prioritize it over location freedom.
To stay competitive, companies need to think beyond set in stone on-site policies. Offering greater control over schedules, for instance through flexible shifts, compressed weeks, or self-managed hours, may become the differentiator in a tight labor market.
Navigating the RTO conundrum
But as the pendulum swings back toward on-site work, talent are clear about the terms. Among fully remote workers, 3 in 4 expect higher pay to return full-time to the office, almost the same (74%) require more flexibility over hours, and 66% seek additional leave in return for the RTO mandate.
This doesn't mean employers can't bring people back. It means we need to make the business case —and the trade-offs—transparent. Purpose, autonomy, and support must be part of the equation.
Well-being matters more than ever
Well-being cannot be overlooked. Three out of five workers are willing to accept a lower paying job for a less stressful role—and 40% have already taken that step.
Even as talent place greater emphasis on employability, flexibility, and long-term career growth, one theme cuts across all priorities: well-being still matters deeply. The desire for meaningful work and sustainable careers can't be met in high-stress environments.
The takeaway for leaders is that supporting well-being is a strategic lever for retention. Organizations that identify and remove stressors at the source—from workload pressures to rigid systems—will be better positioned to attract and keep their best people.
A moment to lead with clarity and care
As the world and our markets navigate exceptional challenges, this crucial moment requires something from both employers and talent. The traditional dynamics of give-and-take have evolved, with people standing ready to make trade-offs. But understandably, they want clarity, consistency, and commitment in return.
I'm of the view that organizations that strike that balance—between what business needs and what people want—will be the ones that thrive. That means leading with a long-term view. Investing in employability. Reducing friction. Valuing time. And building trust at every turn.

Some strategists see a stock-market bubble brewing — and it's not the Magnificent 7's fault this time
Stock valuations are rising. Rather than the Mag Seven, look at the "Terrific 20." The Terrific 20 stocks includes diverse sectors, indicating a broadening market beyond Big Tech. But some warn of "speculative fervor," given that price multiples, not earnings, are on the rise. Stock valuations are getting frothy again, but this time, it's not all Big Tech's fault. Yes, valuations of the Magnificent Seven stocks — Apple, Amazon, Microsoft, Meta, Alphabet, Nvidia, and Tesla — are back up after since bottoming in April. Yet, the group's 12-month forward price-to-earnings ratio is still down from mid-2024, mid-2023, and 2020 levels. Meanwhile, forward PE ratios on the next 20 stocks in the S&P 500 continue to surge, topping levels seen earlier this year. Their valuations are also higher than at any point over the last decade. Arun Sai, a senior multi-asset strategist at Pictet Asset Management, calls the group the "Terrific 20." Some may see the rising forward expectations for a widening number of stocks as a sign of health, as the rally extends beyond just the most popular stocks. But when stocks rise because of multiple expansion instead of earnings growth, it may be a sign that investor sentiment is becoming overheated. "These companies span a broad set of sectors more closely tied to the real economy, including financials, energy, industrials, consumer, and legacy tech," Sai wrote on Tuesday. "Names like Broadcom, Walmart, JPMorgan, Berkshire Hathaway, Visa, and GE Aerospace now account for ~17% of the MSCI US index, compared to 33% for the Mag 7." "Broader participation is a positive — when it's driven by earnings," he continued. "But when more of the market gets expensive, the narrative that 'US equities aren't overpriced, just a few exceptional companies are' becomes harder to justify." Sai compared the current environment to the so-called "Nifty Fifty" bubble in the 1960s. Richard Bernstein, the founder of Richard Bernstein Advisors and former chief investment strategist at Merrill Lynch, said in June that there are parallels to another famous episode of euphoria—the dot-com bubble of 2000—as the market seems solely focused on an emerging technology. On Wednesday, Bernstein reiterated his skepticism of the rally, noting that the market is still relatively concentrated even if valuations are surging among more than just the top seven stocks. Trading of leveraged ETFs, zero-day options, and low dollar-value stocks is also picking back up, signs of excess optimism, he said. "If you're a trader, I think you should take a deep breath and kind of look at what's going on and realize that everybody's in this huge speculative fervor," Bernstein told Business Insider. "But if you're an investor and you want to be a little patient, I don't think it gets much better than this." "The reckless abandon is going to leave you with so many opportunities," he continued. "It's going to be like post-2000." Most Wall Street strategists don't see a dramatic pullback ahead, and few have made direct comparisons to prior bubble episodes. In recent days, however, some have extended quiet warnings to investors about the market's near-term direction. Ulrike Hoffmann-Burchardi, CIO Americas and global head of equities at UBS Global Wealth Management, said in a note on Tuesday that "investors should be mindful of potential market swings in the coming weeks," and that "capital preservation or phasing-in strategies can be effective in navigating near-term volatility." While valuations are no doubt extended, there's no guarantee a major market top is near, and the AI trade may have room to run as the technology evolves. Trump Announces Dozens of New Reciprocal Tariff Rates
Hours before the pause on 'reciprocal' tariffs was due to expire, President Donald Trump released an executive order modifying the duty rates for dozens of U.S. trade partners. Ranging from 10 percent to 41 percent, the new tariffs will go into effect on Aug. 7, the order indicated. Goods that are found to have been transshipped—or rerouted through third countries to evade higher duties—will be subject to an additional 40-percent tariff. These rates will replace those announced by Trump on 'Liberation Day' in early April. Meanwhile, countries that weren't listed, and import more American-made products than they export to the U.S., will be subject to 10-percent duties—the same universal baseline tariff that was announced April 2. 'I found that conditions reflected in large and persistent annual U.S. goods trade deficits constitute an unusual and extraordinary threat to the national security and economy of the United States that has its source in whole or substantial part outside the United States,' the president wrote in the executive order. 'I declared a national emergency with respect to that threat, and to deal with that threat, I imposed additional ad valorem duties that I deemed necessary and appropriate.' A Washington, D.C.-based Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit heard oral arguments for and against that justification earlier in the day. Trump wrote that information and recommendations from senior cabinet officials regarding the country's trade relationships and foreign trading partners' existing tariff barriers informed his decisions on the modified rates. Heightened duties are designed to prioritize America's domestic manufacturing base and supply chains, and its defense industrial base, he wrote. While Trump has often said in recent weeks that there would be no delays to his tariff scheme, they will take effect one week later than he initially planned. Shipments that have been loaded onto vessels to the U.S. before that date, arriving by Oct. 5, will not be subject to the new duties, giving importers a small window to rush orders. Notably, the president made good on his threat to hit Canadian imports to the U.S. market with steeper tariffs, raising the country's rate from 25 percent to 35 percent, beginning Friday (aside from goods covered by the U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USCMA), which include clothing, footwear and textiles). Mexico was not featured on the list, as Trump announced earlier in the day that he and President Claudia Sheinbaum had agreed to extend the current deal for 90 days while they pursue a long-term agreement. The country is currently subject to 25-percent tariffs on goods not covered by USMCA. The president also walked back his threat to hit Brazil with 40-percent duties earlier this week, bringing the South American nation's rate down to just 10 percent. The hardest hit nations were Switzerland at 39 percent, Myanmar and Laos at 40 percent, and Syria at 41 percent. As August, which is historically a weak month for the markets, approaches, there are solid companies trading at reasonable valuations that are worth buying. An undervalued tech giant (Alibaba): Shares of Alibaba are starting to climb out of the slump they've been in for the past few years. This is a great time to consider starting an investment in the tech giant. An improving economy in China and strong demand for the company's cloud services are major catalysts that could potentially double the share price within five years. Alibaba's e-commerce marketplaces, Taobao and Tmall, are posting steady growth in 2025. The March-ending quarter showed these businesses growing customer management revenue by 12% year over year. This primarily comes from fees charged to third-party merchants that sell goods on these marketplaces, which creates very profitable revenue streams for Alibaba. Alibaba has multiple levers to grow revenue in its e-commerce business. It credited recent growth from several initiatives, including the integration of its Cainiao logistics in its e-commerce business, in addition to new software service fees that helped capture a higher percentage of revenue from merchant activities. Another catalyst supporting the stock's recovery is strong growth in Alibaba Cloud. Enterprises are adopting artificial intelligence (AI) services at a rapid rate. Alibaba said its AI-related product revenue has grown at a triple-digit rate for seven consecutive quarters. Its investments in AI are positioning the company for strong growth over the next decade. Despite positive trends across the company, investors can buy shares at just 13.5 times this year's consensus earnings estimate -- a genuine bargain. The stock could double if investors pay a higher multiple of earnings that is consistent with the average S&P 500 price-to-earnings multiple of 30. Wall Street appears to be in the process of rerating Alibaba shares right now, making it a timely buy for the month of August. Too cheap to ignore Jennifer Saibil (Lululemon): Lululemon has been having a very tough time over the past few years, and its stock is down around 45% in 2025 alone. However, at the current price, it looks like the market is overselling it, and it's trading at a bargain price. After many years of strong growth, that growth has decelerated sharply. There are several factors working against it, including pressure in discretionary spending and increasing competition. Lululemon helped create the athleisure movement, but there are low barriers to entry in its industry. In fact, in the premium athleisure space, customers are often looking for the next important and exclusive brand. On top of that, there have been worries about how Lululemon will be affected by tariffs. It's no wonder investors have been losing enthusiasm for the stock. The 2025 fiscal first quarter (ended May 4) did little to quell the pessimism. Sales increased 7% year over year in the quarter, but comparable sales (comps) were up only 1%. Even worse, they decreased 2% in the Americas region. Management maintained its guidance for a mid-single-digit increase in revenue for the full year, but it revised its guidance down for full-year earnings per share (EPS). However, there's reason for optimism. Lululemon stock trades at a P/E ratio of only 14, and at this price, it looks like a good value. Lululemon is highly profitable with an operating margin of 18.5%. That was down 1.1 percentage points from last year in the first quarter, mostly due to tariffs. However, it's still industry-leading, way above similar athletic wear and regular apparel companies. The tariffs situation could be improving as the Trump administration continues to make deals with other countries. And in terms of other countries, although the Americas market has been disappointing, Lululemon is doing very well in China, where sales increased 22% over last year in Q1. At the current price, it could finally be time to give Lululemon stock another shot, especially if you're looking for a value stock. A turnaround is afoot at VF Corp. Jeremy Bowman (VF Corp): With the broad market at an all-time high, it may be a good time for investors to look to beaten-down stocks that could be undervalued. VF Corp. looks like one of those stocks right now. The apparel brand manager, which owns brands like Vans, The North Face, Timberland, and Dickies, has been one of the worst-performing apparel stocks in the market over the last five years. The stock is down about 85% from its peak in 2021. Weakness at Vans, a dividend cut, and broader headwinds on consumer discretionary products all weighed on the stock, but VF Corp. showed signs of a turnaround in the fiscal Q1 earnings report on Wednesday. While overall revenue was flat, the company delivered solid growth at all of its core brands except Vans, which is going through a "channel rationalization," meaning management is reducing the number of distribution points. However, Timberland was up 11%, and The North Face was up 6%. Vans, on the other hand, was down 14%, but the overall business is healthier than it might look. If management can stabilize Vans and improve profitability, the company should be on good footing. Its adjusted operating loss was much better than expected in Q1, and management's guidance calls for full-year growth in adjusted operating income and free cash flow. VF Corp. now trades at a price-to-sales ratio of just 0.5. That gives the stock upside potential if it can achieve a profit margin of just 5%, which would equal a price-to-earnings ratio of just 10 at the current P/S ratio. For a company with a set of well-known premium brands, that should be achievable. If the turnaround continues to make progress, VF could double or triple from here.
