Lewandowski makes extraordinary statement after being axed as Poland skipper
Robert Lewandowski has been stripped of the Poland captaincy after making himself unavailable for the June international break, with the striker reacting furiously
Robert Lewandowski has insisted he will not play for Poland again while Michal Probierz remains as manager after being stripped of the captaincy. Lewandowski is arguably the greatest player in Poland's history.
Since making his debut in 2008, the striker has made 158 appearances, featuring at two World Cups and five European Championships. He was handed the captain's armband in 2014 and has gone on to become his country's record goalscorer.
But after starring as Barcelona won the La Liga title and Copa del Rey double this season, the 36-year-old decided to make himself unavailable for the June internationals. The striker insisted that decision came after talks with Probierz.
The Poland boss reacted by stripping Lewandowski of the captaincy though. Inter Milan midfielder Piotr Zielinski has been handed the armband instead, in a move that was announced on Sunday evening.
A statement from the Polish FA read: "Piotr Zieliński has become the new captain of the Polish national team. The coach personally informed Robert Lewandowski, the entire team and the training staff about his decision.
That move appears to have infuriated Lewandowski, with the relationship between him and national coach Probierz now shattered. That has led to the Barca star revealing he will not play for Poland again while Probierz remains in charge.
Lewandowski said: "Considering the circumstances and the loss of trust in the coach of the Polish National Team, I decided to resign from playing in the Polish National Team until he is the coach. I hope that I will be able to play for the best fans in the world again."
Probierz has been in charge of Poland since 2023, when he stepped up from their Under-21s set-up to replace Fernando Santos. The 52-year-old guided Poland to Euro 2024, but the side did not win a match at the tournament and were dumped out at the group stage.
They beat Moldova in a friendly on Friday night and face Finald in their next World Cup qualifier on Tuesday. The Poles currently sit top of their qualifying group, having taken two wins from their first two games.
It had already been confirmed that Lewandowski would miss this international break. The striker scored 42 goals in 52 games for Barca in 2024-25, his most appearances in a single campaign.
But he missed key matches in the closing weeks of the season including the Copa del Rey final against Real Madrid and the Champions League semi-final against Inter. That led to him pulling out of contention for Poland this month.
'I know that I am often judged as a professional, not a person,' Lewandowski told Polish broadcaster TVP Sport. 'Returning from injury, I played two league games and told coach (Michal) Probierz that I did not feel good physically, but especially mentally.
'With all due respect to journalists, none of you thought about the fact that you can be mentally tired. Who among you can know better how I feel?'

Martin Zubimendi Arsenal transfer twist as phone call 'changes everything'
Mikel Arteta will need more quality options in midfield at Arsenal with Jorginho departing and Thomas Partey looking likely to leave too, but the Gunners have been kept waiting on a move for Martin Zubimendi Arsenal are sweating on a move for Real Sociedad midfielder Martin Zubimendi after Real Madrid stepped up their interest in the Spain international, according to reports. Zubimendi has been strongly linked with a move to the Emirates and it was thought a deal was practically agreed ahead of the summer transfer window. But the transfer is yet to be officially announced, with Arsenal still waiting on the player to decide his future as Mikel Arteta looks to secure more quality in the middle of the park. Jorginho is already confirmed to be leaving while Thomas Partey's contract expires later this month. According to Marca, a deal for Zubimendi has become more complicated after Madrid joined the chase for the player, with "real interest" from Xabi Alonso's side as they bid to replace the outgoing Luka Modric. Zubimendi has been lauded for his superb displays that helped Spain win Euro 2024 while also shining for Sociedad in La Liga. He started 33 games in the top division, scoring two and assisting one. On Sunday, he impressed for Luis de la Fuente's side again in the Nations League final against Portugal and scored the opening goal, despite ending up on the losing side. Zubimendi will now be eager to sort out his future, which remains up in the air despite appearing destined for Arsenal. The report from Marca claims he received a phone call from Madrid that has "changed everything". Madrid will play in the Club World Cup this summer and Alonso is looking to bolster his side ahead of the new-look tournament. Real have already paid £10m to sign Trent Alexander-Arnold from Liverpool just to have him available for the competition, but there is no chance for Madrid to sign Zubimendi in time to play in the US, the report goes on to say. However, Madrid are weighing up their next move over the 26-year-old, with "all options open" as club officials aim to give Alonso the best chance of reclaiming the La Liga title after a trophyless season. Last week, Zubimendi spoke out about his future and shed doubt on the possibility of leaving Sociedad and admitted he was unsure where he would end up this summer. "Of course there are options, but it's true that it seems like it's going to be a different, long summer, and I don't know how it will end," he said. "I don't think thinking about it right now is my priority. I'm here with the national team, which I think is already quite demanding, and if I have to say something, then I will." Commenting on constant speculation he had already agreed to leave Sociedad, he added: 'It's an example of what surrounds football. Many times I wake up in the morning and read things that I didn't know I had done. That was a clear example."

Cristiano Ronaldo makes plea over ‘phenomenon' Lamine Yamal
Cristiano Ronaldo has urged people to be patient with Lamine Yamal after Portugal pipped Spain on penalties in the Nations League final. Veteran Ronaldo proved his worth again for Roberto Martinez 's side, popping up with a second-half equaliser to force a shootout before watching on as his side prevailed over their Iberian rivals. The clash in Munich had been something of a battle of generations as the 40-year-old former Manchester United and Real Madrid forward encountered teen sensation Yamal, already a European champion with his nation and fresh from leading Barcelona to La Liga success. The 17-year-old was well-handled by Portugal's Nuno Mendes on the night, and like Ronaldo was replaced before the penalty shootout began. Recognising the qualities that the youngster clearly possesses, Ronaldo nonetheless urged a cautious approach as Yamal plots his way through the early years of his career. 'He's only 17, and already he's showing incredible talent. He's going to win a lot of titles, both collective and individual. He is a phenomenon,' said Ronaldo after helping his country to a second Nations League triumph. 'But we have to leave him alone, that's what I ask. He has a very long career ahead of him and will surely win the Nations League many times.' Ronaldo played through an injury to feature in the final and said afterwards that he is not yet sure where his future lies having turned down offers to feature at the upcoming Club World Cup. "What a joy," Ronaldo said of the final victory to Sport TV."First of all for this generation, which deserved a title of this magnitude, for our families. My children came here, my wife, my brother, my friends. "Winning for Portugal is always special. I have many titles with clubs, but nothing is better than winning for Portugal. It's tears. It's duty done and a lot of joy. "When you talk about Portugal it is always a special feeling. Being captain of this generation is a source of pride. Winning a title is always the pinnacle in a national team."

Leicester and England wonderkid Jeremy Monga, 15, snubs Man City interest to stay at King Power Stadium
Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) LEICESTER CITY have signed 15-year-old starlet Jeremy Monga on a bumper new contract in a major coup for the Championship club. The news will come as a blow to Manchester City and a string of other Premier League and top continental clubs who were desperate to snap up the teenage prodigy. Sign up for Scottish Sun newsletter Sign up 1 Jeremy Monga has signed a professional contract with Leicester Credit: Alamy The winger became the second youngest player ever to appear in the Premier League earlier this season when he came on as a substitute against Newcastle. And he went on to make seven Premier League appearances for Ruud van Nistelrooy's relegated Foxes. That sparked interest from Euro giants Real Madrid, Barcelona and Bayern Munich as well as interest closer to home, led by Man City. Foxes fans feared Monga would be snapped up before he fulfilled his potential at the King Power. City could have swooped before he was old enough to sign his first professional contract aged 17 and Leicester would only have received a nominal fee as compensation for developing the young talent. However that would have been worth a fraction of the kid's true value. Now Leicester have protected their investment by convincing the 15-year-old winger to sign a new scholarship contract with a professional clause that kicks in when he reaches his 17th birthday in July next year. Monga, who joined Leicester's Academy as a nine-year-old, will now begin his Academy scholarship this summer with his first pro contract kicking in by the summer of 2026. Despite being just 15 years old, Monga has already featured for the Foxes first team during the 2024/25 season. It means the teenager will be around next season to try and help Leicester return to the Premier League at the first attempt and comes as a huge boost to the relegated Foxes. £67M Real Madrid Star Rodrygo on Gunners Hit List | From The Sports Desk | Sun Sport Leicester are also on the brink of signing fellow teenager Jake Evans on a similar deal. 'It's important to have these players for the future for a longer time. I think he will be very good for the club,' said Van Nistelrooy at the end of last season. Polish goalkeeper Jakub Stolarczyk has seen his contract extended by the Club to 2027 after an impressive campaign that saw the 24-year-old Academy graduate collect 10 Premier League appearances. In total Leicester signed up nine Academy graduates as they prepare for life back in the Championship. But Monga's deal is by far the most significant as it keeps him out of the clutches of Europe's leading clubs. Following a 16-minute debut off the bench against Newcastle in the Premier League, Monga went on to make a further six league appearances for the club under Van Nistelrooy. A club statement said: "Nine exciting young talents from our Academy will extend their stays with Leicester City after a combination of new contracts, extension options and scholarship agreements were confirmed... "Meanwhile, Jeremy Monga has committed to commencing his professional career as a Leicester City player, with an agreement now in place to secure the talented teenager's future at King Power Stadium. "Jeremy will begin his Academy scholarship this summer with his first professional contract scheduled to commence in summer 2026. "Our second-youngest appearance maker and the second-youngest player in Premier League history, having made the first of his seven Premier League appearances against Newcastle United in April, aged 15 years and 271 days, Jeremy is among an exciting group currently progressing on our Academy pathway, which he joined as an Under-9." The versatile winger has been captain of England's Under-16s too and trained with City's U-21s squad as a result of his potential. But that only helped to catch the eye of some of Europe's top clubs, with City among those who were hoping to tie up a move this summer. Monga almost made history by becoming the youngest ever Premier League goalscorer against Nottingham Forest, only to be denied by Matz Sels. Van Nistelrooy was boisterous on his future and said at the time: "That would have been some story if Jeremy could have topped his exam week with a winner away at Forest. "If he stays here and this is his future we can build more minutes into his pathway. "I've had many conversations with him and his family. And so hopefully he can sign soon - it's up to him. "It's a joy to work with him and sometimes we speak about GCSEs and mathematics. I even have to help him with his studies sometimes! "But if he had scored the winner against Forest that would have been a real fairytale."
