Lewandowski makes extraordinary statement after being axed as Poland skipper
Robert Lewandowski has been stripped of the Poland captaincy after making himself unavailable for the June international break, with the striker reacting furiously
Robert Lewandowski has insisted he will not play for Poland again while Michal Probierz remains as manager after being stripped of the captaincy. Lewandowski is arguably the greatest player in Poland's history.
Since making his debut in 2008, the striker has made 158 appearances, featuring at two World Cups and five European Championships. He was handed the captain's armband in 2014 and has gone on to become his country's record goalscorer.
But after starring as Barcelona won the La Liga title and Copa del Rey double this season, the 36-year-old decided to make himself unavailable for the June internationals. The striker insisted that decision came after talks with Probierz.
The Poland boss reacted by stripping Lewandowski of the captaincy though. Inter Milan midfielder Piotr Zielinski has been handed the armband instead, in a move that was announced on Sunday evening.
A statement from the Polish FA read: "Piotr Zieliński has become the new captain of the Polish national team. The coach personally informed Robert Lewandowski, the entire team and the training staff about his decision.
That move appears to have infuriated Lewandowski, with the relationship between him and national coach Probierz now shattered. That has led to the Barca star revealing he will not play for Poland again while Probierz remains in charge.
Lewandowski said: "Considering the circumstances and the loss of trust in the coach of the Polish National Team, I decided to resign from playing in the Polish National Team until he is the coach. I hope that I will be able to play for the best fans in the world again."
Probierz has been in charge of Poland since 2023, when he stepped up from their Under-21s set-up to replace Fernando Santos. The 52-year-old guided Poland to Euro 2024, but the side did not win a match at the tournament and were dumped out at the group stage.
They beat Moldova in a friendly on Friday night and face Finald in their next World Cup qualifier on Tuesday. The Poles currently sit top of their qualifying group, having taken two wins from their first two games.
It had already been confirmed that Lewandowski would miss this international break. The striker scored 42 goals in 52 games for Barca in 2024-25, his most appearances in a single campaign.
But he missed key matches in the closing weeks of the season including the Copa del Rey final against Real Madrid and the Champions League semi-final against Inter. That led to him pulling out of contention for Poland this month.
'I know that I am often judged as a professional, not a person,' Lewandowski told Polish broadcaster TVP Sport. 'Returning from injury, I played two league games and told coach (Michal) Probierz that I did not feel good physically, but especially mentally.
'With all due respect to journalists, none of you thought about the fact that you can be mentally tired. Who among you can know better how I feel?'

Real have already paid £10m to sign Trent Alexander-Arnold from Liverpool just to have him available for the competition, but there is no chance for Madrid to sign Zubimendi in time to play in the US, the report goes on to say. However, Madrid are weighing up their next move over the 26-year-old, with "all options open" as club officials aim to give Alonso the best chance of reclaiming the La Liga title after a trophyless season. Last week, Zubimendi spoke out about his future and shed doubt on the possibility of leaving Sociedad and admitted he was unsure where he would end up this summer. "Of course there are options, but it's true that it seems like it's going to be a different, long summer, and I don't know how it will end," he said. "I don't think thinking about it right now is my priority. I'm here with the national team, which I think is already quite demanding, and if I have to say something, then I will." Commenting on constant speculation he had already agreed to leave Sociedad, he added: 'It's an example of what surrounds football. Many times I wake up in the morning and read things that I didn't know I had done. That was a clear example."

The news will come as a blow to Manchester City and a string of other Premier League and top continental clubs who were desperate to snap up the teenage prodigy. And he went on to make seven Premier League appearances for Ruud van Nistelrooy's relegated Foxes. That sparked interest from Euro giants Real Madrid, Barcelona and Bayern Munich as well as interest closer to home, led by Man City. Foxes fans feared Monga would be snapped up before he fulfilled his potential at the King Power. City could have swooped before he was old enough to sign his first professional contract aged 17 and Leicester would only have received a nominal fee as compensation for developing the young talent. However that would have been worth a fraction of the kid's true value. Now Leicester have protected their investment by convincing the 15-year-old winger to sign a new scholarship contract with a professional clause that kicks in when he reaches his 17th birthday in July next year. Monga, who joined Leicester's Academy as a nine-year-old, will now begin his Academy scholarship this summer with his first pro contract kicking in by the summer of 2026. Despite being just 15 years old, Monga has already featured for the Foxes first team during the 2024/25 season. "Jeremy will begin his Academy scholarship this summer with his first professional contract scheduled to commence in summer 2026. "Our second-youngest appearance maker and the second-youngest player in Premier League history, having made the first of his seven Premier League appearances against Newcastle United in April, aged 15 years and 271 days, Jeremy is among an exciting group currently progressing on our Academy pathway, which he joined as an Under-9." The versatile winger has been captain of England's Under-16s too and trained with City's U-21s squad as a result of his potential. Monga almost made history by becoming the youngest ever Premier League goalscorer against Nottingham Forest, only to be denied by Matz Sels. Van Nistelrooy was boisterous on his future and said at the time: "That would have been some story if Jeremy could have topped his exam week with a winner away at Forest. "If he stays here and this is his future we can build more minutes into his pathway. "I've had many conversations with him and his family. And so hopefully he can sign soon - it's up to him. "It's a joy to work with him and sometimes we speak about GCSEs and mathematics. I even have to help him with his studies sometimes! "But if he had scored the winner against Forest that would have been a real fairytale."
