Commissioner of Canada Elections announces eight administrative monetary penalties and an undertaking for Canada Elections Act violations

GATINEAU, QC, March 14, 2025 /CNW/ - The Commissioner of Canada Elections (CCE), Caroline J. Simard, announced today the publication of eight administrative monetary penalties (AMPs) and an undertaking to address violations under the Canada Elections Act (the Act). In order to maintain transparency, and as required by the Act, summaries of AMPs and the full text of undertakings are published on the CCE's website.
Notices of violation imposing AMPs were issued to:
The financial agent of two electoral district associations who failed to return the amount of a contribution that exceeded the limit during the general election of 2019.
The financial agent of a contestant in a 2021 nomination contest who failed to provide the financial returns within the required deadlines.
The official agent of a candidate from the 44th general election who incurred elections expenses that exceeded the limit for the purposes of the 44th federal general election.
An official agent for a candidate from the 44th general election who failed to dispose of the campaign's surplus within 60 days.
The official agent of a candidate who failed to pay a claim within three years of polling day.
Two official agents for candidates from the 43rd general elections who failed to provide the statement of unpaid claims and loans within the required deadlines following polling day.
In addition, the CCE accepted an undertaking from an official agent who failed to file the Candidate's Electoral Campaign Return within the required deadlines following the 43rd federal general election in 2019.
AMPs are administrative tools that the Commissioner can use to address violations under the Act. They aim to promote compliance with the Act. More information about AMPs can be found in the CCE's Policy for the Administrative Monetary Penalty Regime.
An undertaking is a pledge made by a person or entity that did not comply with a requirement of the Act, and accepted by the Commissioner, aimed at ensuring compliance with the Act.
The Commissioner of Canada Elections is responsible for ensuring compliance with, and enforcement of, the Act and the Referendum Act. The Office of the Commissioner is distinct from Elections Canada and carries out a different mandate.

Why ₦70,000 can't buy ₦70,000 worth of goods in Nigeria

Nigeria's minimum wage has long been a topic of contention, caught between political promises, economic realities, and the everyday hardships faced by workers. Nigeria's minimum wage increased by 133% to ₦70,000 in July 2024 following negotiations. Economic challenges have reduced the real value of the wage from ₦30,000 to ₦55,379 by mid-2025. Inflation impacts remain despite reported reductions due to rebased consumer price index data. The current wage of ₦70,000 was signed into law in July 2024, following months of discussions among the government, labor organizations, and companies. The 133% rise from the previous ₦30,000 marks one of the highest salary hikes in the country's history. The move was designed to shield workers from the steep rise in inflation, the falling naira, and an overall deteriorating economy. However, a new report tells a different story. A study by Dataphyte shows that inflation has reduced the real value of Nigeria's minimum salary from ₦30,000 to ₦55,379 in less than a year. Impact of Nigeria's inflation on its minimum wage The dip, calculated between January and July 2025, comes despite an official claim of an 84% drop in inflation in the first half of the year, which was mostly due to a rebased consumer price index rather than a true drop in the cost of living. The Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) and many workers have long claimed that the ₦70,000 wage, signed into law in July 2024 after lengthy negotiations, still falls short of meeting basic living needs. Even while the headline inflation rate fell somewhat to 21.88% in July 2025 from 22.22% in June, more than 11 percentage points lower than the 33.40% reported in July 2024, families received little comfort. Food, shelter, transportation, and other necessities remain prohibitively costly. The July 2024 Minimum Wage (Amendment) Act was the third-largest increase in Nigeria's history and the fourth pay adjustment under separate governments. However, like earlier upgrades, it arrived after a five-year hiatus, and its advantages were short-lived. Historical data indicate that while wages increased from ₦18,000 to ₦30,000 in 2019, their real worth decreased to ₦15,540 by the end of 2023 and ₦11,708 by mid-2024. In less than a year, the most recent rise is losing more than one-fifth of its value, continuing the same trend. Economists caution that pay increases will continue to be undermined before workers can fully experience their effects unless the underlying causes of inflation are addressed and price stability is improved.

Scott Bessent's sudden visit to IRS office — with whistleblowers — sends strong message just days after sixth commish was ousted

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent made an impromptu visit to the IRS Thursday, six days after commissioner Billy Long was ousted by the president for unexplained reasons, the sixth tax chief to bite the dust this year. As acting commissioner, Bessent spent 45 minutes in the building to reassure the troops that he is hands-on and taking charge of the organization after a period of uncertainty. But the two visitors he brought with him sent an even stronger message: IRS whistleblowers Gary Shapley and Joe Ziegler, who testified to Congress last year about the corrupted investigation into Hunter Biden, strode into the building side by side with Bessent. IRS acting commissioner Scott Bessent spent 45 minutes in the building to reassure the troops that he is hands-on and taking charge of the organization after a period of uncertainty — six days after commissioner Billy Long was ousted by President Donald Trump. Mattie Neretin – CNP They are now advisers to the Secretary, focused on integrity and reform to ensure all taxpayers are treated the same. 'By visiting the building with Shapley and Ziegler, Secretary Bessent is sending a message to IRS Personnel that he is hands-on acting chief, focused on implementation of OBBB [tax cuts in the 'One Big Beautiful Bill' Act] and long overdue modernization,' said a Treasury spokesperson. 'He has stated his goals are collections, customer service and privacy.' For Shapley and Ziegler, it was a sweet return to the organization that they felt had retaliated against them after they blew the whistle. Bessent introduced them to the senior leaders in the commissioner's office recently vacated by Long. It was due to the pair's protected whistleblower disclosures that Hunter's sweetheart deal with the DOJ blew up. It was their investigatory work that was ultimately used in the criminal charges against Hunter, who was found guilty of gun felonies by a jury in Delaware and pleaded guilty to tax fraud in California, but was granted a presidential pardon by his father, Joe Biden, before he was sentenced.
