Gold heads for weekly decline as US price data dims hopes of big Fed cut

Gold prices edged higher on Friday, buoyed by a weaker dollar, but were poised for a weekly decline after hotter-than-expected U.S. producer price data dampened prospects for a super-sized September rate cut by the Federal Reserve. Spot gold rose 0.2% to $3,340.59 per ounce as of 0941 GMT. Bullion has lost 1.7% for the week. U.S. gold futures for December delivery edged up 0.1% to $3,387.50. The U.S. dollar index fell 0.4%, making gold less expensive for other currency holders. "In the short term, gold has a heightened inverse relationship to moves in the U.S. dollar, which in turn is being whipsawed by economic data and fast news on both tariffs and Ukraine," independent analyst Ross Norman said. U.S. producer prices increased by the most in three years in July amid a surge in the costs of goods and services, data showed on Thursday, signaling inflation pressures in the pipeline. Weekly jobless claims also came in lower than expected, at 224,000 compared to forecasts of 228,000. The data dampened bets, fanned by benign consumer price data and comments from U.S. Treasury Secretary Bessent earlier this week, that the Fed's next cut might be more than a quarter-point. Non-yielding gold typically performs well in low-interest-rate environments. U.S. consumer price data showed only a marginal increase in July, briefly boosting hopes for large-size rate cut by the Fed. "We have seen in the past that gold price corrections get smaller and smaller, suggesting that some buyers, who missed out in the past, use these price setbacks as a way to gain exposure to the yellow metal," said UBS commodity analyst Giovanni Staunovo. On the geopolitical front, investors are awaiting the outcome of U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin's meeting in Alaska later in the day. Elsewhere, spot silver fell 0.5% to $37.79 per ounce, platinum lost 0.9% to $1,345.02, and palladium was down 1.2% to $1,131.56. South African rand lifted by gold, focus on inflation data next week

JOHANNESBURG - South Africa's rand firmed against a weaker dollar on Friday, helped by higher gold prices as worries over the United States' fiscal health sent investors into the safe-haven asset. At 0807 GMT, the rand traded at 17.5250 against the dollar , about 0.5% stronger than its previous close. Gold prices gained on Friday, boosted by a pullback in the dollar which was last trading down about 0.3% against a basket of currencies. Like other major producers of precious metals, South Africa often benefits from higher gold prices. Investors will keep a keen eye on domestic inflation figures due on Wednesday next week, for clues about the health of Africa's most industrialised economy. "... it has been an impressive week for the ZAR so far, as it started the week above 17.70 and could make it 10 cents stronger at the close of trade today," said ETM Analytics in a research note. "Intra-day U.S. retail sales and industrial production will take centre stage and will likely determine how the USD closes out the week," said the note. On the stock market, the Johannesburg Stock Exchange's Top-40 index was up 0.3%. South Africa's benchmark 2035 government bond was also slightly firmer in early deals, with the yield down 1 basis point to 9.595%.

Gold poised for weekly fall as bets fade for big Fed rate cut

Gold was subdued on Friday and was heading for a weekly fall, as hotter than expected U.S. inflation data dented expectations for a super sized 50 basis point U.S. interest rate cut in September. FUNDAMENTALS * Spot gold was down 0.1% at $3,333.58 per ounce, as of 0120 GMT. Bullion has fallen 1.9% for the week. U.S. gold futures for December delivery eased 0.1% to $3,378.90. * The Labor Department reported the U.S. producer price index (PPI) rose 3.3% year-on-year in July, beating forecasts of 2.5% while weekly jobless claims were lower than expected at 224,000 versus 228,000 forecast. * This comes after data on Tuesday showed that U.S. consumer prices increased marginally in July, increasing chances of a Federal Reserve rate cut next month. * While Thursday's hot PPI data did not dent chances of a Fed rate cut in September, it hurt the case for the Fed to resume cutting rates with a 50 bp reduction. * St. Louis Fed President Alberto Musalem on Thursday said a half-point rate cut at the Fed's September meeting is not warranted, a day after Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said it was possible. * Non-yielding gold thrives in a low-interest-rate environment. * Investors will next focus on whether Fed Chair Jerome Powell offers any fresh clues on policy at the U.S. central bank's annual economic policy symposium in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, next week. * On the geopolitical front, investors are tempering expectations that Friday's summit between Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin will deliver a significant breakthrough on the war in Ukraine despite some hopeful sign. * SPDR Gold Trust, the world's largest gold-backed exchange-traded fund, said its holdings fell 0.30% to 961.35 metric tons on Thursday from 964.22 tons on Wednesday. * Elsewhere, spot silver rose 0.2% to $37.89 per ounce, platinum fell 0.3% to $1,351.78 and palladium slipped 0.4% to $1,140.69.
