SMD Semiconductor Calls On Young Talents To Explore Careers In Chip Design At TRACE 2025
KUCHING, June 15 (Bernama) -- Sarawak's homegrown semiconductor company, SMD Semiconductor, is calling on the next generation of talents to explore exciting career opportunities in chip design by visiting its booth at the upcoming Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS) Talent Recruitment and Career Exhibition (TRACE) 2025.
The event will take place on June 17 and 18 at the UNIMAS Kota Samarahan campus.
In a statement today, SMD chief executive officer Shariman Jamil said the company is actively seeking Sarawakian talents and aims to showcase the real-world impact of a career in chip design — a field that goes far beyond technical work.
'Chip designers are behind the technologies that power smartphones, electric vehicles, medical devices, and smart homes. With strong global demand, this industry offers long-term job stability, competitive salaries, and the satisfaction of seeing your innovations come to life,' he said.
Shariman added that SMD provides multiple pathways for local graduates, from internships to full-time career placements, in areas such as chip design, semiconductor engineering, and AI development.
He highlighted the company's flagship Semiconductor Mastery Programme, a six-month specialised training course focused on Analog Integrated Circuit (IC) Design and IC Test Solution Development Engineering.
The programme is run in collaboration with several key partners, including the Ministry of Education, Innovation and Talent Development Sarawak (MEITD), Melexis NV, a Belgium-based global semiconductor supplier, X-Fab Sarawak, a German semiconductor foundry, and the Centre for Technology Excellence Sarawak (CENTEXS).
In addition, SMD works closely with local universities to deliver advanced training and education, including a postgraduate microelectronics programme in collaboration with Swinburne University of Technology Sarawak.
'At our booth, visitors will be able to meet industry professionals, submit their CVs directly, and explore opportunities to join our team or enrol in specialised training at the SMD Academy, which is focused on preparing Sarawakians for high-value careers in the digital industry,' he said.

The autonomous late-night cab service, which was launched as part of a pilot programme in September, will begin providing services near Apgujeong, Sinsa, Nonhyeon and Cheongdam subway stations from Monday, according to the city. Currently, the cabs are available in Gangnam's Yeoksam-dong, Daechi-dong, Dogok-dong and Samseong-dong. The initiative, the first of its kind to be introduced by the city, currently operates three cabs from 11 pm to 5 am on weekdays. Users can summon the cabs like a regular taxi through the Kakao T app, with up to three people allowed to board at a time. The service had been free of charge during the pilot programme. The city said it had serviced a total of 4,200 rides since its first operation on Sept 26, equivalent to an average 24 rides per day. According to Immigration New Zealand, starting November 2025, New Zealand will be trialling visa waiver status for Chinese passport holders travelling from Australia with a valid Australian visitor, work, student or family visa, allowing them to visit New Zealand for up to three months with a New Zealand Electronic Travel Authority (NZeTA) rather than applying for a visa. This does not include people transiting through Australia, and applicants will still need to meet the criteria for an NZeTA. Perak PMR 2025 Boosts Lumut Tourism and Local Trade
LUMUT: From its usual quiet charm, Lumut Waterfront turned vibrant as visitors flocked to the three-day Perak MADANI Rakyat Programme (PMR) 2025, which kicked off on Friday. Trader Mohd Faizal Che Tan, 50, said the Perak PMR 2025, which concluded today, had given a welcome boost to local tourism, drawing visitors to the coastal town famed for its 'ikan bilis mata biru' (blue-eyed anchovies). 'It's a good programme, as it has helped revive tourism here. This place is famous for blue-eyed anchovies, so something like this really helps bring people in. 'I just hope that after this, more local and foreign tourists will keep visiting Lumut and bring back the buzz,' he said when met here today. Afif Isyraf Izuwan Shah, 20, who works at a nearby seafood outlet, said many Perak PMR 2025 visitors would drop by to purchase anchovies, salted fish and other local seafood products. 'Alhamdulillah, since the event started, I've had more customers, including people from outside. A lot of them are from ministries and government agencies, and that's really helped boost my sales. 'This programme has also indirectly given us seafood traders a platform to promote local products like fish crackers, fish satay and sambal ikan bilis,' he said. Held at Lumut Waterfront, the Perak PMR 2025 brought together over 200 services from various ministries and government agencies, attracting over 200,000 visitors to 36 booths throughout the three-day event. Perak is the second location to host the large-scale PMR initiative, a result of strategic collaboration between the Performance Acceleration Coordination Unit (PACU) of the Prime Minister's Department, which serves as the main secretariat, and the Ministry of Higher Education (MOHE), as the lead ministry.
