Perak PMR 2025 Boosts Lumut Tourism and Local Trade

The Sun15-06-2025
LUMUT: From its usual quiet charm, Lumut Waterfront turned vibrant as visitors flocked to the three-day Perak MADANI Rakyat Programme (PMR) 2025, which kicked off on Friday.
Trader Mohd Faizal Che Tan, 50, said the Perak PMR 2025, which concluded today, had given a welcome boost to local tourism, drawing visitors to the coastal town famed for its 'ikan bilis mata biru' (blue-eyed anchovies).
'It's a good programme, as it has helped revive tourism here. This place is famous for blue-eyed anchovies, so something like this really helps bring people in.
'I just hope that after this, more local and foreign tourists will keep visiting Lumut and bring back the buzz,' he said when met here today.
Afif Isyraf Izuwan Shah, 20, who works at a nearby seafood outlet, said many Perak PMR 2025 visitors would drop by to purchase anchovies, salted fish and other local seafood products.
'Alhamdulillah, since the event started, I've had more customers, including people from outside. A lot of them are from ministries and government agencies, and that's really helped boost my sales.
'This programme has also indirectly given us seafood traders a platform to promote local products like fish crackers, fish satay and sambal ikan bilis,' he said.
Held at Lumut Waterfront, the Perak PMR 2025 brought together over 200 services from various ministries and government agencies, attracting over 200,000 visitors to 36 booths throughout the three-day event.
Perak is the second location to host the large-scale PMR initiative, a result of strategic collaboration between the Performance Acceleration Coordination Unit (PACU) of the Prime Minister's Department, which serves as the main secretariat, and the Ministry of Higher Education (MOHE), as the lead ministry.

Amazon expands same-day grocery delivery to perishable foods to compete with Instacart, Walmart

FILE PHOTO: A downtown building is wrapped in Amazon Prime advertising ahead of Comic-Con International, in San Diego, California, U.S. July 22, 2025. REUTERS/Mike Blake/File Photo NEW YORK (Reuters) -Subscribers to Prime service can now receive strawberries, milk, meats and frozen dinners on the same day they order them as the company expands its fast-delivery optionto perishable food items, Amazon announced on Wednesday. It is the latest move by Amazon to compete with grocery delivery services offered by Walmart+ and Instacart. Shoppers in more than 1,000 U.S. cities - including Phoenix; Raleigh, North Carolina; and Tampa, Florida - can get ice cream delivered to their doors within hours, while Amazon plans to expand the service to 2,300 cities by the end of the year. The company announced in June that it is investing $4 billion to bring same-day and next-day delivery services to more than 4,000 rural U.S. communities by the end of the year. Previously, Prime subscribers' grocery orders were fulfilled through Amazon Fresh or Whole Foods. Now the additional service will complete orders through its same-day delivery logistics locations. Same-day delivery is free for Prime members, who pay $14.99 monthly or $149 annually, for orders over $25. Walmart's membership service, Walmart+, costs $98 a year and offers same-day delivery in under three hours—with some orders arriving in as little as 30 minutes. As the largest grocery retailer in the United States, most of Walmart's deliveries tend to be dry groceries and perishables. In May, Walmart said it will soon be able to offer delivery within three hours to 95% of the U.S. population, and that faster delivery speeds are helping drive its business. Between February and April, Walmart reported a 91% increase in deliveries under three hours compared with the same period last year. Amazon shoppers "can order milk alongside electronics; oranges, apples, and potatoes with a mystery novel; and frozen pizza at the same time as tools for their next home improvement project - and check out with one cart and have everything delivered to their doorstep within hours," Doug Herrington, chief executive of Worldwide Amazon Stores, said in a press release. E-commerce giant Amazon has struggled in previous years to get shoppers into its physical stores. While the company is focusing on its U.S. grocery experience, it is facing hurdles in the UK with its suppliers, a study by British grocery regulator the Groceries Code Adjudicatorfound. PETRA To Drive National Water Policy For Sustainable Supply

KOTA BHARU, Aug 13 (Bernama) -- The Energy Transition and Water Transformation Ministry (PETRA) is committed to strengthening the implementation of the National Water Policy as a driver for transforming the national water sector, ensuring safe, viable and sustainable water supply for the people. Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof said this effort will not only enhance the security of the country's water resources but also drive Malaysia towards becoming a dynamic water hub with potential contributions to economic development, job creation, and facilitating research and development (R&D). 'In this context, the Department of Irrigation and Drainage (JPS) plays an important role in strengthening cooperation at the federal, state and local government levels towards integrated water management. 'The transformation of the water sector towards more efficient water management requires an integrated information system to safeguard water security and ensure ecosystem sustainability for a better future,' he said. He was speaking at the 2025 JPS Senior Managers and District Engineers Conference here today, which was also attended by Kelantan Menteri Besar Datuk Mohd Nassuruddin Daud. Fadillah, who is also Minister of Energy Transition and Water Transformation, said efficient and sustainable water resource management remains one of the main focuses of the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP), especially as issues of clean water supply security and changing rainfall patterns due to climate change become increasingly critical. Under Thrust A7 — Strengthening Flood Mitigation and Adaptation — the government emphasises implementing more comprehensive, integrated and innovative strategies to increase the nation's resilience to increasingly complex and high-impact flood disasters. 'As the main technical agency in managing national water resources, PETRA hopes JPS will continue to lead in ensuring integrated, sustainable and resilient water resource management in Malaysia. 'JPS is also expected to strengthen its role as a facilitator of the national water policy at the state and district levels so that there are no gaps in planning and implementing water-related projects,' he added.
