AF-EC to hold mega meet on natural farming practices

The Hindu15-06-2025
Accion Fraterna-Ecology Centre Director Y.V. Malla Reddy on Sunday stressed the urgent need to reverse soil health and take measures on a large scale to combat the effects of climate change. He said the AF-EC will hold a massive programme on Tuesday to sensitise the farmers in Anantapur district to take up natural farming.
Addressing the media on Sunday Mr. Malla Reddy said: 'Excessive use of chemical fertilisers, pesticides, and herbicides has compromised soil health. The Accion Fraterna-Ecology Centre has been actively working for the past five years to reverse this trend.'
He added that, 'We have been working in this direction for the past several decades by implementing the watershed programmes and have been following natural farming practices, which is promoted extensively by the Rythu Sadhikara Samstha (RySS) through the Andhra Pradesh Community Managed Natural Farming.'
To spread the message and educate farmers, the AF-EC has been observing World Day to Combat Desertification for the past 15 years, and on Tuesday, an event will be held in with 500 farmers from the district at the RDT Inclusive High School. District Collector Vinod Kumar V, natural farming expert, farmers and officials will deliver messages on practical methods of improving soil health.
There will be 20 stalls depicting various techniques on preparing bio-fertilisers and other organic inputs. 'Demonstrations will include planting models, creating farm pond, and watering options so farmers will get a first-hand experience,' he added.
Chief Operating Officer AF-EC, J. Murali Krishna said that adopting natural farming practices was the only solution to improving public health. He appealed to farmers to attend the event on Tuesday and benefit from the experiences shared by farmers who have already adopted natural farming practices.

SEIAA launches helpline for environmental clearance queries

Jaipur: The State Environment Impact Assessment Authority (SEIAA) Wednesday introduced a dedicated helpline to provide quick, transparent assistance on environmental clearance (EC) queries for project proponents and environmental consultants. The service, available on +91 141 3500181, operates Monday to Friday from 10am to 5pm, excluding govt holidays. A senior official said, "It will offer immediate updates on proposal status, EC procedures and other related matters, reducing the need for physical visits to the SEIAA office in Jaipur. The initiative aims to streamline processes and improve efficiency in environmental governance." Parallel to this development, the forest, environment and climate change department has outlined measures to accelerate the delivery of govt schemes and facilities to displaced families, resolve pending land transfer cases and advance wildlife conservation projects. The department has prioritised the settlement of khatedari (land ownership) rights for land allotted to displaced families, enabling them to access govt schemes and essential services. Administrative officials in Alwar, Sawai Madhopur, Kota, Jhalawar, and Bundi have been directed to clear all such cases at the earliest. "Pending matters related to budget announcements are to be implemented without delay. Coordination between the forest department and local administrations will be strengthened to ensure that state-run schemes reach every eligible beneficiary. Wildlife infrastructure is also set for rapid development. Expansion and completion of biological parks in Rajasthan, including the remaining works at Abhera Biological Park in Kota and Marudhara Biological Park in Bikaner, have been placed on priority. The department aims to improve facilities in protected wildlife areas while addressing human-wildlife conflict through awareness programmes in nearby communities. These decisions were formalised during a review meeting attended by senior officials of the forest department, district-level forest officers, and district administration representatives. The meeting also recognised ongoing efforts by local administrations and departmental staff in supporting displaced families and managing conservation challenges. Citing court rulings, govt says Curchorem STP doesn't need green clearance

Margao: State govt has defended the construction of the sewage treatment plant at Curchorem without conducting an environmental impact assessment (EIA), pointing to several court rulings that it claims exempt STPs from such requirements. In a written reply to a legislative assembly question by MLA Viresh Borkar, environment minister Aleixo Sequeira has categorically stated that 'there is no requirement for environmental clearance (EC) for STPs under the EIA Notification 2006.' The STP at Curchorem courted controversy after it emerged through an RTI reply in June that the Goa State Pollution Control Board (GSPCB) had no records of any EIA being conducted for the STP. Govt's position rests primarily on three judicial orders. The most significant is a National Green Tribunal (NGT) decision in Kehar Singh versus State of Haryana of Sep 2013, which govt claims clarified that STPs don't require environmental clearance under the 2006 EIA notification. Further, the reply refers to two more recent cases — an NGT ruling in Undir Paryavaran Saurakshan Manch and others versus the Goa Coastal Zone Management Authority and others of Jan 2019, and a high court judgment in Jairaj Naik and others versus the Sewerage and Infrastructural Development Corporation of Goa Ltd of Nov 2019. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like The Most Beautiful Female Athletes Right Now Undo However, this contradicts the earlier NGT judgment cited by activists (Application No. 124 of 2013), which mandated prior environmental clearance for the construction of STPs, particularly for combined effluent treatment plants handling more than 10% industrial contributions. Nevertheless, govt's reply has left considerable information gaps. The reply states that details regarding water quality assessments, public consultations, and environmental monitoring are 'not available' or 'not applicable' due to govt's position that no EIA was required. Govt stance notwithstanding, activists maintain that the STP's location on the Zuari riverbank is fraught with environmental red flags. Activist and Curchorem resident Aditya Dessai earlier pointed out that the project resulted in 'large-scale destruction of mangroves through filling of the riverbed within the high tide line'. Besides, the sewage line passing through the Cacora industrial estate also raises questions about whether the facility should be classified as a combined effluent treatment plant, which would bring into play stricter EIA requirements under the NGT guidelines. Further in its reply, govt has acknowledged receiving at least one complaint regarding the STP construction and operation, with the matter currently 'under consideration' and 'the decision pending'. German military helicopter crashes in Saxony, two soldiers killed

At least two members of the German air force were killed when their helicopter crashed during a training flight in the east of the country, the defence ministry said Tuesday. The crash happened near the town of Grimma in the eastern state of Saxony. An air force spokeswoman told AFP that the two deceased crew members were "experienced" and said that a third was still being searched for. Defence Minister Boris Pistorius said that the two dead soldiers were members of the air force's Helicopter Wing 64. The helicopter had been hired for training purposes and crashed for as yet unknown reasons into the Mulde river earlier on Tuesday. The EC-135 helicopter went missing in the morning, and local police said that canoeists later spotted parts of the helicopter in the river. More than 100 emergency service members, including police divers, joined the search for the crew. A boom has been deployed in the Mulde River because of kerosene leaking from the helicopter. "The death of the crew members has affected me and the whole of the armed forces deeply. Our thoughts are with their relatives and relatives," Pistorius said. He added that "everything possible" would be done to investigate the circumstances of the crash.
